Stan Ingersol Historical Perspectives on Nazarene Higher Education Each religious movement breeds its own folklores, and a folklore whose truth is often assumed is that Nazarene colleges were founded to train ministers. This folklore has some merit, for certain Nazarene colleges did originate from a desire to train Christian workers—though not ministers exclusively. But in other cases the folklore is not true at all. Some Nazarene colleges began with the intention to establish a liberal arts college, while others emerged from schools founded originally to educate grammar and high school age youth. In the case of the latter, the focus was on educating a Christian laity and forming the identity of Nazarene youth in a way that integrated basic educational achievement with moral and spiritual training rooted in certain theological understandings. Thus, any generalizations about the purpose of early Nazarene colleges must be broad enough to take into account different intentions—training Christian workers and educating a Christian laity. Training Schools for Christian Workers The origins of present–day Point Loma Nazarene College offers a place to begin. It is commonly asserted that Phineas Bresee was the college's founder, and in a larger sense that is true. But if being a founder means being the initiator, then Bresee is not its founder. On this point, there is agreement between Timothy L. Smith (the late dean of Nazarene church history), Carl Bangs (author of the first critical biography of Bresee), and Ron Kirkemo (author of the first critical history of the college).

This Conference, which was held to celebrate the Centenary of the Ordination of Olive M. Winchester in the Parkhead Church in 1912 (the first woman to be ordained in the UK), began on Friday 11th May, with a day of academic papers and discussion held in the Chapel of The University of Glasgow where about 45 gathered. A key-note address was brought by Dr Janet Wootton of the Congregational Federation. PRESIDENT’S LETTER Don’t you love stories, the way stories unfold and the way stories are told? We are all shaped by story. We live out our existence within the context of shared stories—families have stories, churches have stories, even businesses have stories. Throughout life we hold on to the characters and plot develop - ments of the stories that are meaningful to us. They become our guiding narra - tive. Neal Postman says it this way, “Our genius lies in our capacity to make meaning through the creation of narratives that give point to our labors, exalt our history, elucidate the present, and give direction to our future.” The NNU Centennial is a time for storytelling. We pause to remember, to retell stories, to laugh, to cry, for each of us associated with NNU has a story to tell. It is our story, but it is also part of the NNU story. It is the convergence of these two entities—individual and university—that yields the life-shaping narratives that each of us is writing, and each of us remembers. We will soon launch the Northwest Nazarene University Centennial Celebration. We light the Centennial candles at the 2012 Centennial Homecoming Kickoff and blow out the candles at the 2013 Centennial Homecoming Finale. Amidst the reunions and revelry we want to listen to our story. To better accomplish this NNU Centennial goal, we have sought the able and expert assistance of two of NNU’s favorite sons—Dr.

    CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE Together “Since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other and each of us needs all the others” (Romans 12:5) BRITISH ISLES WINTER 2012 No. 13 Challenge for an Olympic Year It seems incredible that another year has gone by and we are another year nearer our Lord’s return. It seems 2012 will be an exciting year with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and the Olympic games in London. Thinking of 2012, a number of our churches are looking at having an ‘Olympic’ theme to their children’s clubs, youth groups, and outreaches, to coincide with the ‘games’. Thinking of scripture, one gets the feeling that the Apostle Paul was no stranger to the ‘games’, indeed, a cursory look informs us of three things. Firstly, he wants to run a good race. ‘You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?’ Galatians 5:7 (NIV). His point is in relation to circumcision, but overall about us not being justified by the law. Rather we live by faith. ‘The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love’ Gal 5:6 (NIV). The good race, is faith expressing itself through love. May our actions this year reflect our love rather than our anger or annoyance. Run a good race. Secondly, he wants to run in such a way as to get the prize. ‘Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize’ 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NIV).
