However, you must still register for these classes to assure that you receive cancellation and other notices. The ADJLC in determination with the Instructor reserves the right to cancel a courses or lecture if there is insufficient enrollment. Applicable to Online Registration ONLY You will automatically receive an email acknowledgement of your registration. 4 ADJLC COURSES SUNDAYS iEngage: Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict - Rabbi Ed Bernstein Through the study of Jewish narratives about Israel and the unpacking of the complex meanings of peace in Jewish tradition, participants are invited to explore the ideas and values that animate different attitudes toward the conflict and how these values shape their own political understandings. Curriculum was developed by the Hartman Institute Lecture and Study Series Dates: Nov. 20, Dec. 4, 11, 18, Jan. 8, 15, 22, 29, Feb. 12 Time: 9:30 – 11:30 Location: TTE ————————————————————————————————— Jewish Gangsters - Rabbi Dr. David Dalin Meyer Lansky, Arnold Rothstein and the Saga of American Jewish Gangsters In this talk, Dr. David Dalin, historian and Rabbi, will discuss the fascinating saga of Jewish gangsters in America. Providing historical anecdotes and analysis, he will discuss the lives, crimes and surprisingly strong Jewish identities of Meyer Lansky, Arnold Rothstein, Bugsy Siegel, Mickey Cohen, and other famous (and infamous) American Jewish gangsters. Dates: Dec. 18 Time: 3:00 pm Location: TSPBC ————————————————————————————————— Jews and Politics - Rabbi Michael Simon This 3 part session will examine the historical role and involvement of Jews in American politics, political ide- ologies of the Jewish community, voting behavior, and Jewish preferences and predictions in the current presi- dential race. The final class will review results, exit polls of Jewish voters, and answer the question – is it good for the Jews? Dates: Oct. 30, Nov. 6, 13 Time: 10:00 am Location: TBK ________________________________________________________________________________________ 5 MONDAYS The Amidah - Rabbi William Marder We will learn more about the content of the Amidah, the central prayer of each service. We will discuss the prayer and its theology; Shabbat and Yom Tov as viewed in the Amidah; and core Jewish values as expressed in the Amidah. The course will lead to basic decoding of the prayers. A book fee will apply. Classes may include video news clips, news in ‘easy’ Hebrew, based on the knowledge and ability level of the participants. A solid basic working knowledge of Hebrew will help the participants get the most out of the class. Jan. 30 at 2:00pm at TSS - The Ladies Auxiliary by Tova Mirvis This is a book about the Sisterhood of Memphis' Orthodox Jews. It illuminates the timeless struggle between mothers and daughters, family, religious freedom and personal revelation. Feb. 27 at 2:00pm at TSS - The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga This is a book about the untouchables of India--it has been called a Black Comedy. To think that this still happens in India is truly sad. March 20 at 2:00pm at TSS Only Yesterday, 1941-1958, A Memoir by Fedora Horowitz Fedora, a member of Temple Torat Emet, has recently published her memoirs growing up in Romania during WWII, the Holocaust, and later suffering the terror of the Communist Regime. In the Values Game, participants are encouraged to collaborate, discuss, and evaluate Jewish values and work as a team to narrow choices and stand for a cause. This activity promotes higher order thinking, evaluating, communication skills, cooperative learning, public speaking, and active listening. In this course we will examine our link in a four-thousand year-old continuous journey that began with Abraham and continues today and into tomorrow. So, get ready to enter the time capsule of the oldest faith in Western Civi- lization and hang on for what may be the educational adventure of a lifetime! We will use a Hebrew reading text, the siddur and other materials of interest. Students are asked to bring in other translations and commentaries to add to our discussions of the text. New students welcome as we will review last year’s material.
