Yet today in the early part of the 21st Century Lake Sturgeon populations overall enjoy much greater protection from over-exploitation, and have greater opportunities for recovery and sustainability throughout their range than they have experienced since the early 19th Century. A combination of factors including: increased attention over the last 30-40 years by state and provincial governments to effectively manage harvest and conduct proper assessments, increased public awareness of LS and their extreme vulnerability to overexploitation, improvements in assessment techniques, improvement in LS propagation techniques and stocking strategies, exponential expansion of population studies and research, increasing awareness and efforts to improve habitat and water quality, and the formation of the North American Sturgeon and Paddlefish and World Sturgeon Conservation Societies have all contributed to greater protection and recovery potential. While these are all positive steps that collectively should allow many LS populations to continue or start down the road to recovery, there are still waters and populations that may not be getting the attention needed to allow their recovery to occur. -

Kark's Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to 309 Wisconsin Streams By Richard Kark May 2015 Introduction A Badger Stream Love Affair My fascination with rivers started near my hometown of Osage, Iowa on the Cedar River. High school buddies and I fished the river and canoe-camped along its lovely limestone bluffs. In 1969 I graduated from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and soon paddled my first Wisconsin stream. With my college sweetheart I spent three days and two nights canoe- camping from Taylors Falls to Stillwater on the St. Croix River. “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond blared from our transistor radio as we floated this lovely stream which was designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1968. Little did I know I would eventually explore more than 300 other Wisconsin streams. In the late 1970s I was preoccupied by my medical studies in Milwaukee but did find the time to explore some rivers. I recall canoeing the Oconto, Chippewa, Kickapoo, “Illinois Fox,” and West Twin Rivers during those years. Several of us traveled to the Peshtigo River and rafted “Roaring Rapids” with a commercial company. At the time I could not imagine riding this torrent in a canoe. We also rafted Piers Gorge on the Menomonee River. Our guide failed to avoid Volkswagen Rock over Mishicot Falls. We flipped and I experienced the second worst “swim” of my life. Was I deterred from whitewater? Just the opposite, it seems. By the late 1970s I was a practicing physician, but I found time for Wisconsin rivers. In 1979 I signed up for the tandem whitewater clinic run by the River Touring Section of the Sierra Club’s John Muir Chapter. -

CHURCH PROFILE 503 North 50th St. Seattle, WA 98103 | www.emmanuelphinneyridge.org HISTORY When Emmanuel Tabernacle first laid it’s cornerstone on August 24, 1930, the Seattle Daily Times declared it to be a “Modern Church”. Perhaps it was the staggering price tag for the building ($35,000) in the midst of our country’s worst financial crisis that caused them to label it as such. However, when a thriving congregation of faithful young families soon filled those pews it was clear what that journalist had understood all along, Emmanuel was a church built for changing times. Now, nearly 85 years departed from the early days of Emmanuel, it is amazing to see how the story of this church played out through the years. Sunday school ministry was at first the focus of Emmanuel, building up a new generation to deal with troubling times in America and abroad. With a world at war, children and their young families learned that in order to serve a God as big as ours you must be willing go to all corners of the earth to spread the Good News of peace. Emmanuel would shift its ministry focus post-war toward World missions, at one time supporting over sixty missionaries across the globe. At its peak in the mid-1980s, this church was regarded as a leader among Seattle faith communities, with well over 1,200 regular attendees, along with the continued children’s and missions programs. We have changed over the years: we are now much smaller without children running around the building as was the case in the past. -

The shortjaw cisco (Coregonus zenithicus) was historically found in Lakes Huron, Michigan, and Superior, but has been extirpated in Lakes Huron and Michigan appar- ently as the result of commercial overharvest. During 1999–2001, we conducted an assessment of shortjaw cisco abundance in fi ve areas, spanning the U.S. waters of Lake Superior, and compared our results with the abundance measured at those areas in 1921–1922. The shortjaw cisco was found at four of the fi ve areas sampled, but abundances were so low that they were not signifi cantly different from zero. In the four areas where shortjaw ciscoes were found, abundance declined signifi cantly by 99% from the 1920s to the present. To increase populations of this once economically and ecologically important species in Lake Superior, an interagency rehabilitation effort is needed. -

A thick green scum covered the lake, an hour’s drive southwest of Milwaukee, turning it into a giant bowl of pea soup. Beneath the 2,072-acre surface, only carp and buffalo fish survived. Over geologic time, all lakes ultimately become bogs, but humans had hastened Delavan’s demise. As the blue-green algae rotted, filling in the lake, it gave off the unmistakable odor of death. Animal carcasses littered the shore. Mysterious maladies struck children and pet dogs that ventured into the water. When the wind carried the fetid odor, windows slammed shut. It was the summer of 1984. All of that was difficult to imagine last April, looking at Delavan Lake glistening like a jewel. As a brisk breeze rippled its steel-blue surface, you could see game fish flicker 10 feet beneath the surface. A $47 million, 10-year restoration effort had transformed the lake. One of the most ambitious lake rescues ever attempted, it’s inspired others as far away as Europe and Asia, says Mary Knipper, former president of the Delavan Lake Improvement Association. The fruit of the effort is apparent in 15,000 annual boat launches from the public landing – craft carrying water skiers, kids in fancy inner tubes and fishermen plumbing Delavan’s 57-foot depths. -

GREEN LAKE coldwater sportfish. Salmon and lake trout provide Dedham and Ellsworth Twps., Hancock Co. reasonably good fisheries in most years. Salmon U.S.G.S. Green Lake, ME (7 1/2') growth rate fluctuates in response to changes in smelt abundance. 1989 was an especially productive Fishes year when anglers caught salmon up to 4 1/2 pounds. In the following ice fishing season, salmon Landlocked salmon Minnows averaged a more typical 16 inches. In recent Lake trout(togue) Common shiner years, salmon growth rates have been below the 1990 Brook trout Creek chub figure.
