JUNE-OCT FREE & BENEFIT 2021 PERFORMANCES SUMMERSTAGE.ORG SUMMERSTAGE NYCSUMMERSTAGE SUMMERSTAGENYC SUMMERSTAGE IS BACK More than a year after the first lockdown order, SummerStage is back, ready to once again use our city’s parks as gathering spaces to bring diverse and thriving communities together to find common ground through world-class arts and culture. We are committed to presenting a festival fully representing the city we serve - a roster of diverse artists, focused on gender equity and presenting distinct New York genres. This year, more than ever before, our festival will focus on renewal and resilience, reflective of our city and its continued evolution, featuring artists that are NYC-born, based, or inextricably linked to the city itself. Performers like SummerStage veteran Patti Smith, an icon of the city’s resilient rebelliousness, Brooklyn’s Antibalas, who have married afrobeat with New York City’s Latin soul, and hip hop duo Armand Hammer, two of today’s most important leaders of New York’s rap underground. And, as a perfect symbol of rebirth, Sun Ra’s Arkestra returns to our stage in this year of reopening, 35 years after they performed our very first concert, bringing their ethereal afro-futurist cosmic jazz vibes back to remind us of our ongoing mission and purpose. Our festival art this year also reflects our outlook -- bold, bright, powerful -- and was created by New Yorker Lyne Lucien, an award-winning Haitian artist based in Brooklyn. Lucien is an American Illustration Award Winner and a finalist for the Artbridge - Not a Monolith Residency. She has worked as a photo editor and art director at various publications including New York Magazine, The Daily Beast and Architectural Digest.

  • Biography (English)
TITO NIEVES BIOGRAPHY (ENGLISH) Three decades of music and the “Pavarotti” of salsa music is stronger than ever Humberto Nieves always knew that he was destined to be an accomplished singer. Nicknamed “Tito” at an early age, the future “Pavarotti” of salsa music was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico and raised in New York, where he nourished his musical predilection on tropical, blues and pop music. “In 1975 I decided that music was my calling,” explains Tito. “At that point I was full of dreams, and would look at a Fania (All Stars) photo with all those big artists and all I could think is what could I do to get to them, to be near Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco and Celia.” GROUNDBREAKING ASPIRATIONS At age 15, Tito Nieves recognized his musical calling and set out to conquer the world of salsa. His relentless drive led him to approach Orquesta Cimarron and he quickly became their lead singer for the following two years. At the end of the 70’s, Tito joined the great Hector Lavoe Orchestra. “Hector taught me the steps in music, he took me by the hand, giving me his support,” Tito recalls. Shortly after, Tito experienced his first recording studio sessions as the lead singer of Tairbori. In the early 80’s, he joined Conjunto Clásico. “During this time I grew musically and, as I shared the stage with Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, it felt like all my dreams had been fulfilled.”“I was born at the right time,” affirms Tito. “Music is my calling.

This CD is ragged but right, all the way. 4/5 stars" – All Music Guide "[They] recast Captain Beefheart's tunes and make the case for him as a composer the equal of Thelonious Monk." – Nashville Scene "..Fast ‘N’ Bulbous are no next best thing: They are the big brass band [Captain Beefheart] never had. With bellowing horns arranged by saxophonist Phillip Johnston and pinpoint swordplay by ex-Magic Band guitarist Gary Lucas, Fast’N’Bulbous ignite the R&B gunpowder inside the tangled surrealism… The group attacks Van Vliet's songs with the same idiosyncratic precision that he drilled into his own musicians." – Rolling Stone Captain Beefheart's music is the quintessential 'outsider art music' of the second half of the 20th century. The blues-drenched Picasso of rock music, Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) created a series of recordings from the 1960s to early 1980s that shattered assumptions regarding how modern American popular music could, or even should, be composed and interpreted. Before leaving music to pursue a life- long interest in painting, he created 10 albums of astonishingly creative music that shattered conventions in popular music as profoundly as cubism had impacted modern painting a half century before.

Introduction Salsa in New York ugust 1992. Hector Lavoe is putting together a new band, making a comeback after a self-imposed hiatus during which he fought for his life, tried to beat addiction, and, as we would find out later, battled A1 AIDS. A rehearsal is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the basement of the Boys and Girls Harbor School (“Boys Harbor”), located in El Barrio (Spanish Harlem) on the corner of East 104th Street and 5th Avenue, a favorite spot for salsa bands to work out new arrangements. Why? Cheap rates, an out-of-the-way place that fans don’t know about, and a location in the most historically sig- nificant neighborhood for Latin music in New York City. In fact, just blocks from Boys Harbor is where it all began back in the 1930s: Machito, Tito Puente, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, everyone lived there. Most salsa musi- cians do not live in the neighborhood anymore, although many teach Latin music to kids and novices at the Harbor’s after-school program, one of the few places where 15 bucks will get you a lesson with Tito Puente’s bongocero. Rehearsal begins just shy of 8 p.m. It was delayed while several musicians copped in the neighborhood. Copped what? Blow, perico, cocaine. Other mu- sicians just straggled in late with no explanation, but no real need: No one complains about the late start. It’s par for the course. Regardless of their tardi- ness, everyone who enters the room makes his rounds greeting everyone else.
