More than a year after the first lockdown order, SummerStage is back, ready to once again use our city’s parks as gathering spaces to bring diverse and thriving communities together to find ground through world-class arts and culture.

We are committed to presenting a festival fully representing the city we serve - a roster of diverse artists, focused on gender equity and presenting distinct . This year, more than ever before, our festival will focus on renewal and resilience, reflective of our city and its continued evolution, featuring artists that are NYC-born, based, or inextricably linked to the city itself. Performers like SummerStage veteran , an icon of the city’s resilient rebelliousness, ’s Antibalas, who have married with ’s Latin soul, and duo Armand Hammer, two of today’s most important leaders of New York’s rap underground. And, as a perfect symbol of rebirth, ’s Arkestra returns to our stage in this year of reopening, 35 years after they performed our very first concert, bringing their ethereal afro-futurist cosmic vibes back to remind us of our ongoing mission and purpose. Our festival art this year also reflects our outlook -- bold, bright, powerful -- and was created by New Yorker Lyne Lucien, an award-winning Haitian artist based in Brooklyn. Lucien is an American Illustration Award Winner and a finalist for the Artbridge - Not a Monolith Residency. She has worked as a photo editor and art director at various publications including New York Magazine, The Daily Beast and Architectural Digest. Her drawings are rooted in community engagement and are influenced by the detals she noticed around her in the US and Haitian cities where she lived as a youngster. The complexities of color, form, and texture she uses in this year’s SummerStage design articulate the vivacity and diversity of NYC.

This summer will certainly be different, and we will be somewhat pared-down, but we will be no less vibrant. Our shows will be staged in four parks: Rumsey Playfield in , in ’s Marcus Garvey Park, in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in , and at the Coney Island Amphitheater along the boardwalk and will, as always, feature both iconic performances and newfangled buzz artists.

Wynton Marsalis’s name looms large in the world of jazz, and for good reason—the GRAMMY® -winning trumpeter, , and bandleader has helped shepherd the cultural institution of jazz into a new millennium. Under his direction, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the resident orchestra of Jazz at Lincoln Center, performs a vast repertoire: from rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works, including compositions and arrangements by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, , Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, , and many others. For this unique performance, the world-renowned orchestra’s performance will explore freedom and may include tunes by , , Ted Nash, and Charles Mingus.

Since the orchestra’s founding in 1988, the group’s performances have been leaving its global audiences inspired and uplifted with the full vigor, vision, and depth of America’s . Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, highlights the story of the momentous 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place in Marcus Garvey Park, featuring never-before-seen footage from the massive concert series that was - until now - virtually eliminated from the history books. The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and was met with rave reviews, taking home both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. SummerStage, in partnership with Rooftop Films, brings you a South Asian double bill for the ages as part of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards’ “Free Movie Nights at the Queens Drive-In” series. Falu, a singer rigorously trained in Indian classical music, has collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef Jean, and Philip Glass. In 2015, Falu was named one of the 20 most influential global Indian women by the Economic Times of India. In 2018, she won the Women Icons of India award in Mumbai, India. Her high energy performance is paired with ’s beloved Monsoon Wedding, 20 years from its initial release. Laying the blueprint for funk in the 1970s by channeling R&B, soul, and into space travelling acid trips, they would also provide the building blocks for the G-Funk sound that dominated the West Coast hip-hop scene in the early 1990s, through the samples that permeat- ed its seminal work, Dr. Dre’s 1992 classic The Chronic. The Parliament/ Funkadelic band and show is the fruit of the collective of dozens of musicians assembled by Clinton, and is an amalgamation of two distinct acts; Funkadelic’s psychedelic Hendrix-descendant rock and roll, and Parliament’s funk free-for-all, filtering James Brown and Sly Stone through ’60s acid culture and .

Famously “introduced” by Eddie Palimieri in “Llegó La India via ,” Linda Viera Caballero quickly made a name for herself as La India, one of the biggest voices in salsa. But before would dub her the “Princess of Salsa,” she got her start in the South Bronx, where she was a founding member of the group TKA, and cut a solo record with Freestyle legends John “Jellybean” Benitez and her husband “Little” Louie Vega. The Arkestra is no stranger to SummerStage; they headlined the festival’s first-ever concert back in 1986 at the Central Park Bandshell, when they were still fronted by their eccentric and enigmatic bandleader Sun Ra. Since his death in 1993, the ensemble has been led by saxophonist , and continues to carry on Sun Ra’s indomitable spirit, perpetuating his unique contributions to jazz and Afrofuturism. The Arkestra is an avant-garde history lesson in cosmic jazz, incorporating elements from throughout jazz history, including , swing, , free jazz, and fusion. They’re joined by Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty (Angel Bat Dawid, Anaiet Sivad, and Brooklynn Skye Scott), an all female -based ensemble that leans on improvisation and spontaneous compositions. The show will also feature a special segment with artists performing to the soulful stylings of Madison McFerrin. The work was originally commissioned and produced by four/four presents for their Open Air Series.

Hip-hop has become a world-wide phenomenon, embedded in the sounds of pop music of every continent. But before it went global, it was the sound of New York, soundtracking block parties and club nights and college radio. Individually the Originals—as the name implies—have been there since almost the beginning, helping pull hip-hop from out of the underground and into the spotlight. The group also champions club culture and the various sounds and styles that New Yorkers want to dance to, from hip-hop to afrobeat, salsa and reggae to funk and house. The crew involves DJ’s Stretch Armstrong, known for programming the beloved “Stretch And Bobbito” radio show; hip-hop producer Clark Kent, Rich Medina, who ran the legendary weekly dance institution APT; mixtape legend Tony Touch; and Producer / Instagram live Club Quarantine creator D-Nice.

Known as the “Pavarotti of Salsa,” Tito Nieves, with his booming, crystalline voice is capable of carrying an entire ensemble. The Puerto Rican-born, New York-bred musician was known as one of salsa’s leading voices of ‘80s and ‘90s New York. Harrison, a New Orleans-born alto saxophonist (and former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers), is leading this ensemble in honor of Parker, while the strings come courtesy of the HSO, comprising graduates of the country’s top conservatories and music schools, such as The Julliard School, New England Conservatory, School of Music, Eastman School of Music, and Indiana University.
