7.1. Discussion at the request of Ron Noonan, Curator, re; Sports Hall of Fame List of Artifacts

Items 7.1 and 7.2 were discussed together.

Ron Noonan, Curator, provided an overview of the Sports Hall of Fame list of artifacts referenced in his report. He noted that only six more spaces were available and may accommodate the plaques for the 2020 inductees. Additional space will be needed for any other items. He suggested that a meeting be arranged with staff of the CAA centre where the artifacts are stored regarding expansion of the site as a temporary measure.

Mr. Noonan also advised that he visited the City of Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame and observed that plaques of inductees were mounted on octagon pedestals with a copy of the inductees’ biography. He suggested that Committee consider that type of display option until more space becomes available.

Committee discussion included the following:  Various options to maximize space at the CAA centre such as: o Adding a second floor at the current site o Adding octagonal columns as observed at the City of Cambridge  Suggestion to consider displaying the artifacts for various sports at venues where the games are most frequently played  Potential cost of including inductees’ biography with the plaques

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, explained that a request for additional space at the CAA Centre would require a meeting with staff from the CAA Centre and the City. A site visit will be arranged and members will be invited to attend. Members will have the opportunity to review the existing storage space and offer suggestions on what changes may be undertaken to accommodate future inductees temporarily.

Ms. Bommer also reminded Committee that a report will be coming forward to a future meeting regarding the request for a new or additional storage building.

The following motion was considered:

SHF002-2020 1. That the discussion at the request of Ron Noonan, Curator, to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee, re: Sports Hall of Fame List of Artifacts be received; and,

7.3. Discussion at the request of Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, re: Induction Ceremony 2020 and Recognition of the 40th Anniversary of the Event and Feedback from Committee.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, noted that 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the Sports Hall of Fame Induction event and suggested that Committee may wish to recognize this at the induction ceremony scheduled for May 12, 2020.

Ms. Bommer referenced the 2019 event program and requested feedback on this year’s program which included, refreshments, entertainment, décor, ticketing, hiring of a guest speaker.

Committee discussion included the following:  Suggestion to select and contact some prominent inductees from the past, such as Cassie Campbell, Fran Ryder and Rick Nash and invite them to speak at the event  The option to contact the Speakers Bureau for information on the past inductees who may be registered with the bureau and extend an invite to speak at the event  Providing potential speakers with a list of questions ahead of time in preparation for a video recording  Agreement to hire the previous Master of Ceremonies (MC), Pat Boland  Ticketing details/prices were to remain unchanged  Elimination of the live auction feature and hiring of the live artist  Variation of the color schemes to include possibly a color, such as ruby, to highlight the anniversary celebration  Consider opportunities to honor the names of inductees who have passed away, with a ‘Legendary Hall of Fame’ designation or something similar  Suggestion of a sit down meal and earlier opening of lobby bar

There was consensus to postpone the hiring of the guest speaker until Committee and staff explore the initiative to invite past inductees to participate in speaking at the event.

 With the 5 presentations for the 2020 inductees, there will only be 1 spot left for future inductees  Any expansion at the present time is only a temporary fix until a new permanent home is found – this needs to be kept in the forefront when deciding upon how to proceed with expansion  Option #1 in order to increase the space: The room located to the east of the SHOF, presently being used as a storage facility, would be an ideal location to expand the SHOF on a short term basis  Option #2: A small half wall to be built in the centre of the two main pods should be considered depending on any building requirements that may have to be met  Option #3: The suggestion to remove the ceiling grate from the two rink side pods to enable further inductees to be mounted higher on the wall (one additional row), was not preferred, as the inductee bios would need to be mounted beside the pictures and this would not be consistent with the present display  Adding display cabinets at this time could be awkward as they may not be suitable with a new facility  Building individual pedestals to display inductees was not considered acceptable  Heidi suggested the electronic presentation of pictures, interviews, videos, etc. could be incorporated  Heidi indicated that a exhibit consultant will be hired to assist in designing/laying out the new SHOF location  Denise to forward an example of a “Collection Policy” for the committee to review – will outline what to accept and what not to accept as a donation, how to accept it, etc.  It was suggested that Committee members begin to think about creative and modern ideas with regards to future presentation in the new hall

Re: Nomination

I was advised that the committee would meet with me on November 7 to discuss my nomination for Kris Newbury’s admittance to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame. I was looking forward to attend but unfortunately I will be out of the country on that date. I was subsequently advised that the committee would accept a written submission that is attached to this letter.

Kris retired at the conclusion of the 2018/19 hockey season and is now residing in Belleville with his wife and three children. He operates a hockey school in the area and is seeking a hockey coaching position.

The Brampton Sports Hall of Fame is meant as a legacy to recognize Brampton’s great athletes and builders that make us all proud to be from Brampton. Kris attained a very high level of success in professional hockey and on the world stage as a member of Canada’s Under-18 team in 1999. We should celebrate Kris’ accomplishments and be proud that he is Brampton born and raised.

The waiting period of three years can be eliminated or reduced upon receipt of a formal motion to consider an exception to the waiting period by a Member of the Committee. I am hopeful that will occur because Kris certainly deserves to be in the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame sooner rather than later.

Sincerely,

Roy Prince

Eligibility for Induction

The Sports Hall of Fame’s Constitution relevant to Kris’ nomination for induction is defined as follows:

6.1 “Any person who is or has been distinguished as an athlete, and having demonstrated outstanding achievement (athlete) shall be eligible for election as an inductee into the Sports Hall of Fame, provided that he or she was a resident of the City of Brampton at the time of the achievement which is the focus for his consideration.”

Kris meets the criteria as he was born in Brampton, played his entire minor hockey in Brampton and continued to reside in Brampton for a number of years during his professional career.

6.4 “Subject to the provisions below, the following persons shall be eligible for induction into the Sports Hall of Fame:  Any athlete representing Canada while playing for a Brampton-based team or club who has been a medallist at a World International Amateur Athletic Federation (I.A.A.F.) or Olympic event”

Kris meets the criteria, as he was a member of Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team, coached by in 1999. Kris was the leading scorer and the team won gold medals at the event. It should be noted that there was no I.A.A. F. Under -18 tournament in 1999. That designation commenced in 2002.

7.1-6

6.5 Athlete Category:

 “those persons in the “Athlete” category shall not be considered for Induction into the Sports Hall of Fame until after a three (3) year waiting period following retirement from major championship competition, except by outstanding pre-eminence and skill, and upon request by the Committee;”

 “the Committee may reduce or eliminate such waiting period upon receipt of a formal motion to consider an exception to the waiting period by a Member”

Kris meets these criteria as his hockey history indicates. He is currently ranked #22 on the AHL All Time Scoring List. This is significant as the league has been in operation since 1936.

Kris played 74 games in the NHL for the following coaches: Paul Maurice (Toronto), Mike Babcock (Detroit), John Tortorella (New York) and Craig Berube (Philadelphia). Each coach has spoken highly of Kris’ grit and determination.
