Redmayne is an actor who wants you not to discover deeper The Danish Girl into his characters, but rather for you to see every ounce of effort he puts into portraying them. For The Danish Girl I had only recently discovered I was a trans woman since March of this year. In June, I started going out and presenting as a woman. My life, as it is, is difficult. But it works. For now. But when I see the form that that experience has taken in this film, and the lens with which Hooper uses to depict it, the emotional connection is lost, replaced only with discomfort. As Lili, he performs womanhood by way of stereotype. His femininity is reduced to caricature. Like Redmayne, Hooper exaggerates and conflates feminine imagery to the point of parodizing them. It is only for Lili. Hooper, on the other hand, will shove his camera right in the face of any feminine aspect of Lili. Especially her clothes. What they give us instead are the stereotypical tropes of a housewife—simple retail job, gossiping with the girlfriends, desperately wants to have kids of her own—with nothing else to define her. Like the rest of the film, her ultimate form of femininity is a simplification, a caricature. Because of The Danish Girl. As these varying stereotypes of womanhood are given immense focus, it becomes all the more The Danish Girl what Hooper decides not to closely examine. The Male Gaze is presented in one scene for less than a minute, and then never brought up again. The Danish Girl it… Let her fly. Smash cut to me simultaneously cackling and barfing. Funny as it was to me, at leastit was the most fitting end to this film. Hooper and Redmayne define The Danish Girl much of Lili by their own shorthand feminine archetypes, that it was only appropriate to have her end this film not as a woman, but as a piece of frilly fabric being flung out to who-cares. That is clearly how they see her, and that is clearly how they define us. An artificial texture, careening through empty air. Follow Carol Grant on Twitter. Because of the subject matter in The Danish Girl I wasn't sure this was going to be a film that I would particularly like but I need The Danish Girl have have worried because I thought this was a fascinating movie that justified it's plaudits. This is the story of Danish artist Einar Wegener Eddie Redmayne who realised that despite being born a man he is really a woman and that woman is called Lile. Although Redmayne will quite obviously get all the praise for his role as Lile but I think the outstanding performance The Danish Girl this film comes from Alicia Vikander who The Danish Girl his wife. As an actor she is The Danish Girl unlike Redmayne who has the make up to hide behind. Instead of being about Lile this The Danish Girl for me is more about the love of his wife who will do anything to make her husband happy. Even if that means losing him. The Danish Girl is Ebershoff ’s first novel. • The Danish Girl: Symmetry As a Representation of Society
THE DANISH GIRL: SYMMETRY AS A REPRESENTATION OF SOCIETY DANIEL BUSTILLO INSTITUTO FRANKLIN–UAH The 1920s were famous for been the time of the opening of mind in the United States and also in some parts of Europe. Before and during the First World War, the Victo- rian mentality predominating in Europe was marked by narrow-minded approaches to Changes in soCial Customs, such as declared homosexuality, bisexuality or trans- sexuality. However, after the Great War, some big Cities such as London or Paris adopted a more progressive stand, while other Countries remained stuck in a Con- servative mentality. Among them, Denmark stood out as generally intolerant to so- Cial transformation. This illiberal soCiety is portrayed in the American-British movie The Danish Girl, in which the topic of transsexuality has been explored. Based on actual events, The Dan- ish Girl (Tom Hooper, 2015) deals with the life of Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), a Danish man married to his wife Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) who, by acCi- dent, disCovers that he feels more Comfortable with the female gender. The Case of Einar Wegener, who will be later named as Lili Elbe, has been represented on the big sCreen as the first transgender woman to undergo a sex reaffirmation surgery in his- tory. Moreover, it has been brought forth as an example for all the transgender peo- ple that feel oppressed daily by their own community. In order to indirectly portray the Conservative soCiety and Context of the time, the director of the film, Tom Hooper, decided to exploit the device of symmetry.

Laura Werner Larsen Gender as Compromise Formation: Towards a Radical Psychoanalytic Theory of Trans* ABSTRACT This theoretical study explores the utility of psychoanalytic theory as a tool for working with trans* identified clients. Acknowledging the deeply problematic history of psychoanalytic theory and practice with trans*clients, the study nevertheless contends that a radical rereading of the psychoanalytic canon can provide a theory of gender as compromise formation and a conceptual toolkit that can allow for anti-oppressive clinical work around gender identity from a psychodynamic perspective. Using conceptual history and conceptual analysis as a methodological frame, the study delineates five concepts in contemporary psychoanalytic theorizing that support the depathologizing of trans* identity and the denormalization of cisgender identity. In so doing, this study draws on the long tradition of psychoanalytic interest in identity formation to help social workers doing psychodynamic work with clients reframe theories of normality and pathology around gender identity for themselves, for their clients, and in combating systemic oppression around gender normativity.

  • Transgender in the Novel the Danish Girl บุคคลข้ามเพศในนวนิยายเรื่อง เดอะ เดนิช เกิร์ล
HMO5 Transgender in the Novel The Danish Girl นันทวัน เสนจันทร์ฒิชัย)** ABSTRACT The Danish Girl, written by David Ebershoff, is based on the true story of the transgender pioneer Lili Elbe, who was born as Einar Wegener in the early 20th century. Einar had a happy married life with his wife Gerda Wegener until Gerda convinced her husband Einar to pose in women’s clothing for a portrait, so Gerda would be able to finish her work. This small moment becomes aa momentous incident when Einar realizes that he could not hide his true gender and identity as a woman any longer. The novel focuses on how Lili, formerly Einar, struggles throughout her groundbreaking transgender journey. Some of Lili’s journey includes intimacy that challenges social standards, the division of males and females within society and Lili’s sex reassignment surgery to become fully female. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the life of Lili Elbe/Einar Wegener is portrayed, by adopting Judith Butler’s queer theory as the lens to obtain knowledge and understand queer individuals in society during that time period. Through the course of this study both confusion as well as social and family pressures were found, which can then be used to illuminate the definition of transgender in a “socially-constructed” society.

  • Chapter I Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study When a child was born the doctor or midwife will take a quick glance at the baby‟s genital and declares if the baby a boy or a girl. However, today we did not flash our genitalia at each other but we unconsciously used observation to determine someone‟s gender, like from their clothes, body shape, voice, face shape, mannerisms and behavior. We also used them to signal others about our gender. Gender is a social system that people used to differentiate roles, appearance, characteristics, behaviors and most importantly identities by using sex which tells the cultural meanings and norms about sex and gender onto human bodies. As a part of daily life, people will not question the assumption and presumption of gender and just thought about it as a common thing that easy to overlook, unless when there is confusion on one gender that appeared as vague and ambiguous. Everyone has a sense of his or her “gender” and it will develop during early childhood as a result of parental rearing practices and societal influences and strengthened during puberty by hormonal changes. This sense of gender is also known as gender identity (American Psychological Association: 2006) 1 2 Gender identity is what defined and differentiate one person to another. As it is related to the gender roles that people have to perform in the society and when they do not fit to their own gender roles they will get discriminated. The society‟s gender roles are classified by a woman needs to be feminine and a man needs to be masculine.

The largest language school within Vallès Oriental is pleased to provide you with this review, crosswords and contest. Enjoy the film!!! The Danish Girl – Review Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) is a painter happily married to aspiring artist Gerda (Alicia Vikander). After her model fails to turn up, Einar poses in silk stockings and satin slippers setting her on a path to her true self: Lili Elbe. Agreeing to help his wife so she can finish the painting on time he answers, “of course, anything at all." And with that, one of the most passionate and unusual love stories of the twentieth century begins. Tom Hooper’s beautiful and moving biopic is about the transgender artist Lili Elbe who worked during the early part of the 20th century and was recognised as one of the first people to under transgender reassignment surgery. Redmayne’s transformation into Lili for the film is remarkable , and it's without a doubt that his emotionally raw performance carries the entire production. Mostly set in 1920s Copenhagen, the film begins in a deceptively light-hearted fashion but becomes ever darker and more complex. Like Hooper’s Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech, The Danish Girl features a repressed husband with a very supportive wife trying to transform and free himself. This time it's not a case of simply overcoming a stammer but of a husband living life as a woman. The screenplay is as much a study of marriage as it is one of sexuality and identity. The film comes steeped in irony. Einar’s quest for change brings husband and wife closer together at the same time that it risks destroying their marriage.
