Regulations and Commentary SOVEREIGN MILITARY HOSPITALLER ORDER OF ST. JOHN OF JERUSALEM OF RHODES AND OF MALTA MEMBERSHIP IN THE ORDER OF MALTA REGULATIONS AND COMMENTARY Promulgated by H.M.E.H. the Prince and Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing and approved by the Sovereign Council on February 18, 2011 ROME 2011 Members of religious Orders are required to read and reread the Rule of their Order on a frequent basis. The Constitutional Charter and Code of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (1997) is a somewhat dry and legalistic documenT and The original Rule of Blessed Raymond du Puy is raTher difficulT To place in a modern conTexT. Members of The Order need To have a work of reference which They can use To regulaTe their lives and it is for this reason that this new edition of the Regulations and Commentary has been produced. A great deal of hard work and thought has been given to it and I and the Sovereign Council are most grateful to those who have made its publication possible. Various experts close to the Holy See have been consulted extensively so that we can be certain that it is in accordance with the teaching of the Church. I commend the use of this document to all members of the Order. Please refer to it often – rather in the way of the monasteries of the Benedictine tradition where an extract from the Rule of St. Benedict is read everyday in choir. The end of the Rule of St. Benedict contains the following exhortation: ‘Whoever you may be, then, in your eagerness to reach your Father’s home in Heaven, be faithful with Christ’s help to this little Rule which is only a beginning.’ Please use it to help you to achieve perfection in your lives as Christians and as members of the Order of Malta. Lasnoski, Wyoming Catholic College Presenters: Maria Morrow, Seton Hall University David Cloutier, Catholic University of America Karen Ross, Loyola University Chicago This well-attended session celebrated the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s profound, prophetic, and polemical encyclical Humanae vitae. The session featured two younger scholars (Maria Morrow and Karen Ross) with a historical and ethnographic approach, respectively, as well as a senior scholar, David Cloutier, who’s more experimental, theoretical essay provoked long discussion well-beyond the session’s close. The session opened with Maria Morrow’s “Living With (and Growing From) Bad Timing: Penance and Humanae vitae.” Going beyond the reception history traced by Tentler’s well-known Catholics and Contraception, Morrow investigates the relationship between an erosion of penitential culture among American Catholics and the near impossibility of Humanae vitae’s safe landing on the shores of American Catholic consciences. Her paper’s focus centers on the bad-timing of three documents: Humanae vitae itself, Paul VI’s Paenitemini, and the United States bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Fast and Abstinence. Humanae vitae shocked Catholics from pew to cathedra, most of which were expecting ecclesial concession to contraception due to tidal changes at the cultural level. Paenitemini and the United States episcopal letter, while attempting to renew and invigorate penitential life, making it more personal, effected exactly the opposite. Catholics felt justified not only in dropping mortifications but also in their flight from the confessional.

    Mary and Inter-religious Dialogue 1/20/15 1:31 PM With Vatican II’s “Declaration on the relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions Nostra Aetate” (NA) [link to: http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat- ii_decl_19651028_nostra-aetate_en.html of October 28, 1965 the Catholic Church has initiated her move toward other faiths by means of interreligious dialogue. The keyword ‘dialogue’ is important in this context since it applies to all cultures as well as faith traditions and respects the need for Inculturation. Moreover, NA explains that true dialogue “regards with sincere reverence those ways of conduct and of life, those precepts and teachings which, though differing in many aspects from the ones she holds and sets forth, nonetheless often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all people (NA, 2). The effect of these encounters become increasingly apparent and is manifested by authentic esteem for the values and convictions in each religion. We can also observe a genuine exploration of common values as well as solicitude for the betterment of living conditions on earth. To foster the work of dialogue, Pope Paul VI set up the Secretariat for Non-Christians in 1964, recently renamed the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. Through ethnographic observation, it establishes a spectrum of practices between two main traditions, namely the antique beatas and the modern missionary congregations. The article argues that Chinese nuns create forms of religious life that are quite distinct from more universal Catholic standards: their congregations are always diocesan and involved in multiple forms of apostolate. Despite the little attention they receive, Chinese nuns demonstrate how Chinese Catholics are creative in their appropriation of Christian traditions and their response to social and economic changes. Keywords: christianity in China; catholicism; religious life; gender studies Surveys from 2015 suggest that in the People’s Republic of China, there are 3170 Catholic religious women who belong to 87 registered religious congregations, while 1400 women belong to 37 unregistered ones.1 Thus, there are approximately 4570 Catholics nuns in China, for a general Catholic population that fluctuates between eight to ten million. However, little is known about these women and their forms of religious life, the challenges of their lifestyle, and their current difficulties. Who are those women? How does their religious life manifest and evolve within a rapidly changing Chinese society? What do they tell us about the Catholic Church in China? This paper explores the various forms of religious life in Catholic China to understand how Chinese women appropriate and translate Catholic religious ideals.

Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

    Teachings of SCTJM - Sr. Christine Hernandez, SCTJM THE SUPREME LOVE OF THE RELIGIOUS HEART: HEART OF JESUS Sr. Christine Hernandez, SCTJM The heart of a religious is a heart only for God, it is an undivided heart; a heart that seeks, in everything, to do the will of God. “The religious vocation in essence is a call of love and for love.”1 There is a covenant of spousal love between a religious heart and God. God calls, one willingly answers entering into a mystery of spousal union. This answering or responding creates a special relationship between Jesus’ Heart and a religious heart; “an answer of love: a love of self-giving, which is the heart of consecration, of the consecration of the person.”2 The call of God is a call of love and the response is a response of love. It is an election made by God, calling some to a closer more intimate following of Christ. When God calls a heart, the heart is so deeply moved that it begins to see ordinary things in a new light. Things that were once important are replaced by things of God; gently, but clearly God begins to covet a heart, draw it closer to Himself, “so I will allure her; I will lead her to the desert and speak to her heart.”3 While He does this, through the Holy Spirit, He pours out all the graces necessary for a response of love; for the response He seeks but will never impose; for the “fiat” of Mary. The heart grows in such love for God and the things of God; it says “I will do what you ask of me simply out of love for you.” It renounces its life, loved ones, career, pets and anything that stands in the way of this spousal union with God; “charity took possession of my soul and filled me with the spirit of self- forgetfulness, and from that time I was always happy.”4.
