But how is a maternalist frame deployed in different contexts? Who deploys this frame, for what purposes and to what ends? In this article, we present a classification scheme to elucidate the diversity and versatility of maternalist frames through the examination of four distinct categories of cases of women's mobilization from the global South as well as North. Drawing on secondary literature and our own ongoing research, we construct a typology of maternalism-from-above and maternalism-from-below to demon- strate how maternalist frames may serve patriarchal or emancipatory purposes with implications for gender justice and the expansion of citizenship rights. © 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. THE SITUATION OF THE LGBTI+ COMMUNITY AT TURKİSH UNIVERSITIES THE EXAMPLE OF THE MIDDLE EAST TECHNİCAL UNIVERSITY Özgür Gür “Europe has seen xenophobia and LGBT as an internal tension, and they try to transfer it to Turkey”, Minister Süleyman Soylu, August 20191 Introduction At the moment, parts of Turkish youth belonging to LGBTI+, Kurdish minority or opponents of the rulling AKP party are intimidated and marginalized. Any public criticism or sign of protest increasingly leads to prosecutions and serious punishments. Over 100,000 students are currently on trial and 70,000 students have been detained.2 Any political activity at universities including student demonsration is banned. The direct elections of the university rector have been abolished.3 Students who dare to protest are evicted from state dormitories and their scholarships are cut without questioning.4 The youth in Turkey has always been trivialized and it struggled to achieve the freedom of speech and its right to education, but within the last years the situation has become more difficult for students. The first changes in the government’s youth policy came in response to the Gezi Park events in 2013. Gezi begun as a reaction against the increasing pressure over freedom on speech, assembly, press and secularism.The sharpest turn, however, came after the attemped military coup in July 15 in 2016, which was an attempt to overthrow the governing regime. The situation is the worst for students who are active on issues of gender equality and LGBTI+ rights. In the past, the majority of LGBTI+ events took place without much attention and were generally ignored in Turkey. -

At 10 a.m. in every time zone, organizers are encouraging teachers, students, administrators, parents and supporters to walk out of school for 17 minutes — one minute for every person killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. March 24: #MarchForOurLives: On March 24, organizers of March for Our Lives are planning to march in Washington, D.C., to call for school safety and gun control. Meet with student leaders to assess needs and any plans. Remind students that counseling and guidance support are available to any student and that Fontana Unified encourages students to reach out. -

FROM THE INSTRUCTOR When the shooting broke out in Parkland, Florida, last February 14, Miranda was already underway with research for an essay about A Beautiful Mind, a 2001 film about the schizophrenic mathematician John Nash. Continuing with that worthy project would’ve been the easiest way for her complete the assignment. But in the wake of Parkland, Miranda’s motivation to understand the power of media representations of mental illness gave her the courage to change her approach midstream and to dive into a controversial political issue. Her choice paid off with the compelling and timely essay you are about to read. In Miranda’s words, “It is possible to start somewhere and then end up in a completely different place, and that is sometimes the best way to develop a project.” On March 24, as students across the country gathered for the March for Our Lives, Miranda was making the last round of revisions to her prizewinning essay “Representations of Mental Illness Within FOX and CNN: The Parkland Shooting.” It too can be understood as a form of civic engagement. In this paper, Miranda presents new data she collected about news coverage of the Parkland school shooting and uses the kind of critical information literacy skills that are essential to responsible citizenship. In doing so, she contributes to both scholarly and public conversations about gun violence and mental illness. Her portfolio makes the connection between scholarly and public discourse explicit when she describes how she drew on knowledge from her research to respond to an acquaintance’s Instagram post blaming gun violence on mentally ill people in especially derogatory terms. -

The calls to abolish ICE focus on the latter, the ERO deportation force. Defenders proffer that the idea is silly,2 that abolition could harm public safety,3 or that advocates of abolition must first explain what, if anything, would replace the agency.4 Those reasons are not persuasive. -
