Ordensjournal / Ausgabe 21 / März 2011 2 Während des Aktenstudiums im Geheimen Staatsarchiv Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, blickte ich zunächst ungläubig auf einige Zeilen, in der Seine Majestät der Kaiser zu bestimmen geruht hatte, wann das Gorgoabzeichen anzulegen wäre. Nun beschäftige ich mich schon seit über 30 Jahren mit deutschen, aber insbesondere auch preußischen Orden, Ehrenzeichen und Abzeichen, aber die Existenz eines Gorgoabzeichens war mir bisher verborgen geblieben. In keiner mir bis dahin bekannten Literatur, die sich mit Themen der Phaleristik beschäftigt, ist dieses Abzeichen je erwähnt worden. Auch die Nachfragen bei anderen, fachkundigen Personen auf dem Gebiet der Orden & Ehrenzeichen brachten keinerlei Erkenntnisse. Da die oben genannte Bestimmung jedoch authentisch war, musste das Abzeichen existiert haben. Deshalb war ich mir sicher, dass es möglich sein musste, mehr über das Abzeichen in Erfahrung zu bringen. Ausgehend von der Bestimmung, wann das Abzeichen angelegt werden sollte, konnten weitere Dokumente gefunden werden, in der auch die Verleihung des Abzeichens dokumentiert wurde. Durch weitere Recherchen von Namen, die ich in den Akten finden konnte, stieß ich auf das Frobenius Institut 1 in Frankfurt am Main. -

RJHI 1 (1) 2014 Instrumentalising the Past: The Germanic Myth in National Socialist Context Irina-Maria Manea * Abstract : In the search for an explanatory model for the present or even more, for a fundament for national identity, many old traditions were rediscovered and reutilized according to contemporary desires. In the case of Germany, a forever politically fragmented space, justifying unity was all the more important, especially beginning with the 19 th century when it had a real chance to establish itself as a state. Then, beyond nationalism and romanticism, at the dawn of the Third Reich, the myth of a unified, powerful, pure people with a tradition dating since time immemorial became almost a rule in an ideology that attempted to go back to the past and select those elements which could have ensured a historical basis for the regime. In this study, we will attempt to focus on two important aspects of this type of instrumentalisation. The focus of the discussion is mainly Tacitus’ Germania, a work which has been forever invoked in all sorts of contexts as a means to discover the ancient Germans and create a link to the modern ones, but in the same time the main beliefs in the realm of history and archaeology are underlined, so as to catch a better glimpse of how the regime has been instrumentalising and overinterpreting highly controversial facts. VIDA El 17 de octubre de 1976 moría en Münster en Westfalia Franz Altheim. Profesor emérito de la Universidad Libre de Berlín desde 1964, se había retirado a vivir en las llanuras del paraíso westfaliano al calor de sus discípulos y muy especialmente de su hija adoptiva Prof. Dra. Ruth Altheim-Stiehl. Las esquelas funerarias se multiplicaron y en su conjunto recogen una panorá- mica completa de la vida y actividad del maestro1. Había nacido el 6 de octubre de 1898 en Frankfurt am Main. Hijo del conocido pintor Wilhelm Altheim, comenzó a escribir cuando apenas tenía 16 años, fecha en la que publicó su Geschichte von Eschersheim, Hessische Chronik 3, 1914. Tuvo que participar muy joven todavía en la primera guerra mundial durante la cual le tocó servir en Turquía, experiencia que probablemente influyó en sus cosmovisiones posteriores. Su tesis doctoral sobre la política de Aristóteles apareció publicada en extracto en 1924: Die Komposition der Politik des Aristoteles. Diss. Frankfurt 1924, 100 páginas. Se habilitó en 1928 con un notable trabajo, publicado dos años más tarde sobre los dioses griegos en Roma: Griechische Gotter im Alten Rom, Giessen, A. Topelmann Verlag, 1930, 216 p. Desde 1928 a 1938 enseñó en Frankfurt, pasando en este último año a Halle (Saale), donde en 1943 fue designado como Profesor Ordinario para Historia Antigua (catedrático). It is therefore unnecessary to add more fantasies to the genuine historical facts in the field of Nazi occultism, especially when it comes to their weird expeditions and their pseudo-scientific researches. The true amateur of sensational and strange stories can still be fully satisfied with Himmler's Witch Project, or the Hollow Earth Theory, or the various moons of the World Ice Theory that fell on our planet and drowned the Atlanteans. This is real history and some high-ranking Nazis did believe in these theories, no matter how sensational they may sound to modern ears. It does not add anything to the uncanny spell of such stories to pollute them with material that cannot be verified or, even worse, with pure lies coming straight out of the imagination of poor authors in search of quick money and fame. -

A preliminary examination of the influence of Das Ahnenerbe in Spain Francisco Gracia Alonso University of Barcelona ([email protected]) Abstract Julio Martínez Santa Olalla, appointed Commissioner-General for Archaeological Excavations at the Spanish Ministry of National Education and Fine Arts in 1939, established, with the support of the Falange (Spain’s fascist political organisation), relations with the Third Reich’s Das Ahnenerbe, a research institute that formed part of the Allgemeine SS commanded by Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler. The first collaboration between the two institutions comprised the excavation of the Visigothic necropolis of Castiltierra (Segovia). In October 1940, during Himmler’s official visit to Spain, the personal relationship established between Himmler and Martínez Santa Olalla resulted in a plan to set up a Falange-sponsored institution for archaeological research modelled on that of Das Ahnenerbe. Political, academic and personal relations were maintained between Martínez Santa Olalla and SS members Sievers, Wüst, Langsdorff and Jankuhn, and also with the Amt Rosenberg directed by Reichsminister Alfred Rosenberg, until the fall of the Nazi regime. This study analyses these and other relations between Spanish archaeologists and Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945. The origin always precedes the Fall. It comes before the body, before the world and time; it is associated with the gods, and its story is always sung as a theogony. The concep- tual bond between the two is such that the celebration of the former frequently involves the embellishment of the latter. The Nazis developed a coherent origin myth and provided the Ger- man people with a distinguished ancestry precisely because they wished to glorify a nation severely humiliated in 1918, fi rst by a military defeat that was rarely acknowledged as such and subsequently by a peace at Versailles that was perceived as a diktat. 17 18 | Annexing Antiquity This discourse on origins was conceived and transmitted in various ways, including academic and scholarly research. History and anthro- pology, often perceived as auxiliary sciences, were thrust into the serv- ice of the new reigning discipline, racial science (Rassenkunde), produc- ing the kind of scholarship under the Third Reich that its leaders demanded. -

Christian Leden og SS Ahnenerbe Hvordan en norsk komponist og musikketnograf ble involvert i Heinrich Himmlers forskningsstiftelse SS Ahnenerbe Per Ivar Hjeldsbakken Engevold Masteroppgave i historie UNIVERSITETET I OSLO Insitutt for arkeologi, konservering og historie Høsten 2013 I Sammendrag I denne masteroppgaven belyser jeg forholdet mellom den norske komponisten, ekspedisjonslederen og etnografen Christian Leden (1882-1957) og Heinrich Himmlers forskningsstiftelse SS Ahnenerbe. Oppgaven tar for seg skjæringspunktet mellom vitenskap og völkischideologi og veien fra diffusjonsteori til raseideologi. Internnotater fra Ahnenerbe, en omfattende korrespondanse mellom Ahnenerbes medarbeidere og Leden, samt Ledens egne brev og tallrike artikler i aviser og tidsskrifter danner kildegrunnlaget for denne masteroppgaven. På bakgrunn av disse kildene har jeg belyst hvilke motiver Ahnenerbe hadde for å samarbeide med Leden, hvordan Ledens nazifiseringsprossess foregikk og hva som ble resultatet av dette samarbeidet. Både Ledens livsløp og Ahnenerbes historie blir fremstilt, for å gi et detaljert bilde av hva som utgjorde den ideologiske bakgrunnen til de forskjellige aktørene. Forholdet mellom diffusjonsteori og raseforskning i denne perioden blir også analysert og drøftet. His ground- breaking theories about dream interpretation and psychological types have often been overshadowed by allegations that he was anti-Semitic and a Nazi sympathizer. Most accounts have unfortunately been marred with factual errors and quotes taken out of context; this has been due to the often partisan sympathies of those who have written about him. Some biographies of Jung have taken a “Stations-of-the-Cross” approach to his life that adds little new information. Richard Noll’s The Jung Cult and The Aryan Christ were more specialized studies but created a sensationalistic portrait of Jung based on highly selective and flawed assessment of the historical record. Though not written in reaction to Noll (the research and writing were begun long before his books appeared), this dissertation is intended to offer a comprehensive account of the controversial aspects of Jung’s life and work. -

In 1912 Laeng wrote a short note about the existence of these two monuments as part of his description of Cemmo to be published in the first edition of theGuida d’Italia: Pie- monte, Lombardia, Canton Ticino in 1914, edited by Luigi Vittorio Bertarelli on behalf of the Touring Club Italiano. Laeng says that these stones bear engravings “similar to the famous ones of Lac de Marveilles in the Mari- time Alps” (p. 595), but the discovery does not seem to have been of particular interest among Italian scholars. During the ‘20s the engravings are mentioned only by Giuseppe Bonafini, an archaeologist and teacher from Cividate Camuno2, and Senofonte Squinabol, a geologist from the University of Turin who was related to the influential Murachelli family of Cemmo. -

Various “Aryan mystics” claimed the Nazi Party was predestined, even mythic, but the theory of occult, conspiratorial forces intertwined with the rise of the Third Reich first explicitly appeared in a novel entitled Les Sept Têtes du Dragon Vert (The Seven Heads of the Green Dragon; 1933) by a French journalist (and possible French spy) named Pierre Mariel. A number of other French publications elaborated on this theme during the 1930s, culminating in Edouard Saby’s Hitler et les Forces Occultes (Hitler and the Occult Forces; 1939). That same year, the disenchanted German politician Hermann Rauschning published Gespräche mit Hitler (Conversations with Hitler; UK title Hitler Speaks) a book describing Hitler’s encounters with “the new man” of quasi-Theosophist lore, and his “bondage to … evil spirits.” With the outbreak of war in September 1939, the “occult Reich” theory reached the English press in Lewis Spence’s The Occult Causes of the Present War (1941). The actual business of fighting slowed down such speculations, but the concept re-emerged in Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier’s Le Matin des Magiciens (The Morning of the Magicians; 1960) and Trevor Ravenscroft’s The Spear of Destiny (1972), both of which sold millions of copies and spawned hundreds of imitators, all of which reconstruct and emphasize each others’ larger claims while contradicting each others’ details.
