PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise.

  • Naked Truth "Rolling Stone" (N°633 - 25 Juin 1992) - David Fricke
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Naked Truth "Rolling Stone" (n°633 - 25 Juin 1992) - David Fricke Anthony Kiedis will not disclose the exact location of the bridge. "It's downtown," he says warily, gesturing vaguely at a distant spot on the glittering Los Angeles nightscape outside the high-rise Hollywood hotel room. "But it's unimportant," he adds sharply. "I don't want people looking for it." Kiedis, the singer and lyricist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has already immortalized the spot in "Under the Bridge," the stark and uncommonly pensive ballad - at least for the usually sex-mad, fucked up Chili Peppers -that unexpectedly drop-kicked the band into the Top Ten. But Kiedis is understandably reluctant to tum the bridge into a pop-music tourist attraction. For one thing, it was, and still is, on L.A. street-gang turf; casual visitors are not suffered gladly. For another, it was under that bridge that Kiedis' life bottomed out a few years ago under the weight of a severe heroin addiction. "I was reaching a demoralizing low, just kind of hanging out on the streets and doing my thing and not much else, sadly to say," Kiedis explains in a subdued, slightly gravelly voice quite unlike his agro-stud stage bark. "I ran into some fairly unscrupulous characters involved with miniature Mafiaso drug rings, and the hangout for one of these gangs was this particular location under a bridge. I ended up going there with this gang member, and the only way that I was allowed to go under this bridge was for him to tell everybody else that I was getting married to his sister.

  • The Clash and Fugazi: Punk Paths Toward Revolution
Chapter 1 The Clash and Fugazi: Punk Paths Toward Revolution Mark Andersen Punk rock has always been about more than music. Born largely as a reaction to the self-indulgent excesses and perceived failure of the Sixties rock/revolution, punk offered a blistering critique of idealism sold out or gone bad. This stance was a double-edged sword. Punk's "ruthless criticism of everything existing" (Tucker 1978, 13) spared no one, and could slip towards nihilist extremes. As such, it made the idea of harnessing music for radical change an ever more perilous venture, where only angels or fools might dare to tread. Beneath noisy blasts of illusion-shattering negation, however, an unbending belief in the power of music to generate transformation still lurked. This sense of mission defined no band punk or otherwise-more profoundly than The Clash. Dubbed "The Only Band That Matters" by record company PR, the moniker nonetheless accurately evoked the risk-taking heroic spirit the band sought to embody. If the early Clash track "Hate And War" encapsulated the band's dismissal of the 1960s, they nonetheless borrowed freely from certain currents of that era. Indeed, their jagged, relentless music, close-cropped hair, quasi-military garb, and fierce sense of purpose suggested nothing less than a marriage of Detroit agit-rock legends MC5 with the Chinese Cultural Revolution. If their embrace by the punk underground proved short-lived as the band stretched towards broader horizons, The Clash never fully forsook that initial commitment or community. Many bands rose in the wake of The Clash also willing to risk the ridicule that might come with marrying rock to the pursuit of revolution.

  • Living the Punk Life in Green Bay, Wisconsin: Exploring Contradiction in the Music of Nofx
LIVING THE PUNK LIFE IN GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN: EXPLORING CONTRADICTION IN THE MUSIC OF NOFX By Kieran James The University of Southern Queensland Address for Correspondence: Dr Kieran James, School of Accounting, Economics & Finance, Faculty of Business, University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba Qld. 4350, Australia. Tel: +61 411447530. Primary E-mail: [email protected]; Alternate E-Mail: [email protected]. 1 LIVING THE PUNK LIFE IN GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN: EXPLORING CONTRADICTION IN THE MUSIC OF NOFX Abstract This paper studies song lyrics from three mid-period songs written and performed by Californian punk band NOFX. I discuss NOFX‟s skilful exploration of contradiction in the three selected songs, two of which are character studies of a single young male individual. The questions that the songs pose in true dialectical fashion (but do not definitively answer) include: Is it possible to maintain the carefree existential existence of the archetypal punk rocker in the face of the constraints imposed by suburban life and the voices of middle-class moderation? Can a Jewish gang in Fairfax, Los Angeles simultaneously affirm group self- identity, defend its turf, and practise its (marginalized) religion? Can a young man enjoy Christianity because it makes his life „seem less insane‟ whilst simultaneously taking control of his life and not being a Christian sheep? NOFX poses these questions in admirable dialectical fashion, allows us to reflexively examine the issues involved, and form our own conclusions. The band rarely descends into moralism but moral values underpin NOFX‟s worldview. Above all, NOFX tries to maintain a sophisticated but precarious „both/and‟ rather than „either/or‟ approach to each one of the questions posed in this abstract.
