  • ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2021 Stockholm
March 27, 2021 Stockholm, SWE Nathan Chen (USA) jumps to third World title Nathan Chen (USA) came from behind to soar to his third consecutive World title at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm (SWE) on Saturday. Newcomer Yuma Kagiyama of Japan claimed the silver medal while two-time Olympic Champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan settled for the bronze. Chen, who stood in third following the Short Program, laid down a perfect performance to music by Philipp Glass, reeling off five quadruple jumps – Lutz, flip, Salchow as well as two toes, three of them in combinations. He also threw in a triple Axel and a triple Lutz as well as level-four spins and footwork to score 222.03 points. The five-time U.S. Champion racked up 320.88 points for a runaway victory with almost 30 points to spare. “It’s amazing; the fact that I’m able to be here at this World Championship after that unprecedented year - I’m very happy to be here. I’m very elated right now”, the now three-time World Champion commented. “I just didn't want to lose that (quad) Lutz again. I had struggled on it a little bit at Nationals as well to start off my free program (he fell out) and I always don't like starting with an error; it's hard to regroup after that. My intent was 'hit the Lutz, move on.' In theory I can come back, but realistically I know these guys are going to lay (it) down (and I wanted) to be able to leave this competition satisfied with how I skated in the free.

It impressed the judges enough to allow the 16-year old from Kanagawa to overtake his two Russian rivals in their tight battle for gold. Afterwards, Kagiyama, who is coached by his dad, insisted his victory gave him the confidence to win at other tournaments including the Winter Olympics, Beijing 2022. Andrei Mozalev, the leader going into the free programme, had to settle for silver. His compatriot Daniil Samsanov won bronze. Kagiyama had been third after the short programme, and admitted nerves had got the better of him, but his brilliant free routine saw him overhaul a seven point deficit to claim gold. Lausanne 2020 is the third edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), bringing together the world’s best young athletes between the ages of 15 and 18. For the first time in Winter Olympic history the Games will have gender equality, with equal numbers of male and female competitors in the 81 medal events.

  • ISU Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients Revealed
ISU Lifetime Achievement Award recipients revealed Living legends Jayne Torvill/Christopher Dean (GBR), Tamara Moskvina (RUS) and Alexei Mishin (RUS) received the ISU Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented by Olympic Ice Dance Champion Charlie White and Olympic Ice Dance silver medalist Tanith White, the digital show on Saturday, July 10, united Figure Skating of the present, past and future. British Ice Dancers Torvill and Dean revolutionized the sport with their immortal “Bolero” that won them Olympic gold in 1984. But there is so much more to them than the “Bolero”. Torvill and Dean brought Ice Dance to another level. Their passionate Rhumba Original Set Pattern Dance from 1994 has been developed into a Compulsory Dance, for example. They continued to create unique programs in shows and tours and as choreographers. “From our point of view it has been a life giving exercise. We didn’t know that we would still be involved/a part of [Figure Skating], this far into our lives and that was over 30 years ago, and we’re still doing it, maybe we shouldn’t be doing it but we are doing it and still enjoying it as well.” Tamara Moskvina and Alexei Mishin were successful Pair Skaters end of the 1960s, winning medals at the ISU World and European Championships. While they were technically ahead of their time as skaters, they created their true legend as coaches. They have been coaching for more than 50 years and educated generations of Figure Skaters. Moskvina’s Pairs have won a total of 63 medals at Olympic Games, ISU World and European Championships, which makes her the most successful Pair Skating coach in the World.

  • Last Juniors Book Ticket for ISU Junior Grand Prix Final in Vancouver
October 16, 2018 Lausanne, Switzerland Last Juniors book ticket for ISU Junior Grand Prix Final in Vancouver The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Yerevan, Armenia, was the last chance for skaters to book their tickets to the Final in Vancouver, that will take place from December 6 – 9, 2018. Alexandra Trusova (RUS) lands quad Lutz On her way to her second Junior Grand Prix gold medal this season, Russia’s Alexandra Trusova became the first female skater to land a quadruple Lutz in international competition. The quad Lutz, performed in her Free Skating to “The Fifth Element”, was somewhat shaky, but fully rotated. The reigning World Junior Champion also produced seven triples, two double Axels and level-four spins to win with more than 30 points to spare ahead of teammate Alena Kanysheva. The 14-year-old racked up 221.00 points. Trusova already led following the Short Program. “My free includes three quads, but since I had been sick and did not get into top shape, we made the program easier and I skated it in Yerevan only with one quad Lutz,” Trusova said. “I am very happy that I was able to perform this jump clean and that it was recognized as rotated. I will recover, get into shape, skate my program a 100 percent and get ready for my next competitions,” she added. Watch the ISU Skating Channel’s interview with Trusova here. Kanysheva ranked second in the Short Program with a clean performance that included a triple Lutz-triple toeloop combination. She came third in the Free Skating with five clean triples, but underrotated two other triples.

March 25, 2021 Stockholm, SWE Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN) rocks Men’s Short in Stockholm Two-time Olympic Champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan rocked the Men’s Short Program at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm (SWE) on Thursday for a six-point lead. Rookie Yuma Kagiyama of Japan burst onto the World stage coming second while two-time World Champion Nathan Chen (USA) had to settle for third place on the first day of the Men’s event. Performing to “Let Me Entertain You” by Robbie Williams, Hanyu exactly did that, hitting a quad Salchow, a quad toe-triple toe and triple Axel. The two-time World Champion picked up a level four for his spins and a level three for his smooth step sequence to score 106.98 points. “Mentally I’m much more confident and I think that I can work on my program step by step. I hope that I touched everyone with my program and left an impression everyone will keep in their hearts”, Hanyu shared. “Of course it somehow felt lonely (skating without an audience). But because of times like this I hope that everyone in front of the TV or the internet really enjoyed it.” Kagiyama produced a quad Salchow-triple toe, quad toe, triple Axel and fast-paced steps. The 2020 Youth Olympic Games Champion posted a new personal best with 100.96 points. “During practice I had a hard time adjusting my jumps, but during the competition I tried not to think about it. I just put everything I had into this program”, the 17-year-old said.
