    MIYAKI Yukio (GONG Muduo) 宮木幸雄（龔慕鐸）（b. 1934） Cinematographer Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Miyaki joined Ari Production in 1952 and once worked as assistant to cinematographer Inoue Kan. He won an award with TV programme Kochira Wa Shakaibu in Japan in 1963. There are many different accounts on how he eventually came to work in Hong Kong. One version has it that he came in 1967 with Japanese director Furukawa Takumi to shoot The Black Falcon (1967) and Kiss and Kill (1967) for Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Ltd. Another version says that the connection goes back to 1968 when he helped Chang Cheh film the outdoor scenes of Golden Swallow (1968) and The Flying Dagger (1969) in Japan. Yet another version says that he signed a contract with Shaws as early as 1965. By the mid-1970s, under the Chinese pseudonym Gong Muduo, Miyaki worked as a cinematographer exclusively for Chang Cheh’s films. And how might this be built on the forms of pedagogy – the ‘embodied knowledge’ – of the martial arts themselves? Might the forms of visual-corporeal communication at the heart of ‘kung fu’ (as cinema and physical practice), harbour emancipatory impulses, even if – or paradoxically because – they are rooted in a ‘premodern’ past? In order to argue that this is indeed the case, this essay examines the work of Lau Kar-leung, one of kung fu cinema’s most innovative auteurs during the 1960s and ’70s. Lau’s work as a choreographer and director entailed an extended reflection on his own position not only as a filmmaker, but also a martial arts practitioner. It meditates on the kung fu traditions of which he is a part, and the forms of heritance within which these place him. His films, furthermore, are themselves pedagogical works, capturing their audience within processes of transmission and remembrance that extend from the training hall into the spaces of the media. In the case of Lau’s films, made in the wake of the countercultural and anticolonial turmoil of 1960s and ’70s Hong Kong, the ‘radicality’ of martial-arts cinema’s pedagogy is suggested by the fact that the kung fu traditions in question (primarily Lau’s own Hung Gar lineage) are posited as part of a culture of resistance.

Ninja-Filme: Filme, in denen Ninjas vorkommen. Ninja (von japanisch Ninja = Jemand im Geheimen), ein Schattenkrieger des vorindustriellen Japans, der als Kundschafter, Spion, Saboteur oder Meuchelmörder eingesetzt wurde. Er ist neben dem Samurai eine der gefürchtetsten und gleichzeitig am meisten bewunderten Gestalten des alten Japan. Die Kampfsportart der Ninja nennt man Ninjutsu. Samurai-Filme: Filme, in denen Samurai vorkommen. Die Samurai oder auch Bushi genannt, waren Mitglieder des Kriegerstandes im vorindustriellen Japan. Ninja-Filme erfreuen sich aber einer größeren Beliebtheit, da der Ninja ein geheimnisvoller und mystischer Schattenkrieger ist. Ein willenloses Werkzeug seines Herrn, der aus dem Nichts auftauchte, seinen Auftrag erfüllte und unerkannt abtauchte. Dieses unerkannte Operieren und die Ausübung als Meuchelmörder ist der Grund für den Gegensatz des „ehrvollen“, adligen Samurai und des „ehrlosen“, gefürchteten Ninja.

You got to know how a punch is thrown. A lot of directors and action choreographers don’t know anything about the martial arts and the different schools.” – Liu Jialiang1 Although Liu Jialiang (Cantonese: Lau Kar-leung, Wade-Giles: Liu Chia-liang) is one of Shaw Brothers’ most prolific martial arts directors, his career has not received the level of attention from critics and film scholars this output warrants.2 Liu began as an apprentice to Zhang Che (Wade-Giles: Chang Cheh),3 working under his direction as a martial arts choreographer, until his first directorial effort at Shaw Brothers with Spiritual Boxer (Hong Kong, 1975). Trained in the same line of Hung Gar (pinyin: Hong Jia; a.k.a Hung Fist) as Huang Feihong (Cantonese: Wong Fei-hung), Liu Jialiang has used Hung Gar kung fu as the basis for much of his martial arts choreography4 as well as inspiration for the plots of several of his features. An actor and choreographer as well as a director, Liu helped to stamp Shaw Brothers action features as distinctive amalgams of southern kung fu (pinyin: gongfu) (primarily Hung Gar) inflected by the theatricality of Peking Opera and wedded to other systems of martial arts including northern Shaolin.
