Chapter 3 Lumière, Camera, Azione! the personnel and practices of hollywood’s mode of international production as hollywood filmmakers gained more experience abroad over the years, they devised various production strategies that could be shared with one another. A case in point: in May 1961, Vincente Minnelli was preparing the production of Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), part of which he planned to shoot in Rome. Hollywood flmmaker Jean Negulesco communicated with Minnelli, ofering some advice on work- ing in Italy, where Negulesco had directed portions of Tree Coins in the Fountain (1954) and Boy on a Dolphin (1957) and at the time was producing his next flm, Jessica (1962): I would say that the most difcult and the most important condition of mak- ing a picture in Italy is to adapt yourself to their spirit, to their way of life, to their way of working. A small example: Tis happened to me on location. As I arrive on the set and everything is ready to be done at 9 o’clock—the people are having cofee. Now, your assistant also is having cofee—and if you are foolish enough to start to shout and saying you want to work, right away you’ll have an unhappy crew and not the cooperation needed for the picture. But if you have cofee with them, they will work for you with no time limit or no extra expense.1 Negulesco’s letter underscores a key lesson that Hollywood moviemakers learned overseas when confronted with diferent working hours, production practices, and cultural customs. -

OVERVIEW: Production I (CTPR 507) is about ideas and your ability to communicate effectively through the language of cinema. It combines introductions to the five major disciplines within the cinematic arts: producing, directing, editing, cinematography, and sound with guided opportunities to create individual and small group projects. Students will make two short HD projects as part of an exploration of visual storytelling, as well as shoot a directing an exercise in the Fundaments of Directing (production students only). -

Discouraged by the employment offerings, that do not correspond at all with his experience and capabilities, and demoralized by the innumerous financial obliga- tions accumulated in precedence, he decides to orga- nize the robbery of the century. The police had just stored in a military facility the largest quantity of cannabis ever seized in Switzerland, and it would be burned shortly. Mario decides to put together a gang to ‘substitute’ the cannabis with common hay without anybody being the wiser: in short, the physical evidence disappears, the crime also disappears... Mario searches among those he knows for the possible and trustworthy members of the gang: Ivan, Augusto, Leo, Monica, ‘The Professor’, each of them more impro- bable and desperate than the other, they accept Ma- rio’s plan, all of them convinced to have in their hands the “oro verde” (green gold) that will change definitively their lives. The Still Photographer
_____________________________________________________________________________ ______ The Still Photographer (Stills/Portrait Photographer) by Kim Gottlieb-Walker, Doug Hyun, Ralph Nelson, David James, Melinda Sue Gordon and Byron Cohen Duties The Still/Portrait Photographer's primary job is to interpret the project in single frames which accurately represent the story, production value, stars, and feeling of the show. These images are used to publicize, entice, and seduce the potential audience into watching the show. Whenever the public is exposed to images other than video or film regarding a show, they must be shot by the unit still photographer. The still person will work both during actual filming/taping, during rehearsals, on or off the set. He or she will shoot available light but is also capable of doing fully lit shoots with either his own lighting or in conjunction with production. More specifically, the still photographer takes production stills that the publicity department can use to promote the film or television show in press kits and various print media and the increasingly important DVD stills galleries. This includes characteristic shots of each scene, shots which show the actors acting together, shots which give a feeling of the look and atmosphere of the show, good character shots of the actors, shots of the director directing, special effects being rigged, special make-up being created, anything which could be supplied to the regular or genre press or used later on the DVD to promote interest in and expand knowledge about a production. But beyond that, because the Still Photographer is the only person on the set authorized to take photographs, he or she may, if time allows, serve some of the photographic needs of the crew. -
