This book cannot be expected to please everybody, and it makes no attempt to conciliate those who prefer sentiment to truth, or who allow their reading of historical events to be distorted by present-day controversies, whether ecclesiastical or political. In that respect it tries to live up to the dictum of Samuel Butler that 'he excels most who hits the golden mean most exactly in the middle'. -

PHILIP MELANCHTHON’S INFLUENCE ON ENGLISH THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT DURING THE EARLY ENGLISH REFORMATION By Anja-Leena Laitakari-Pyykkö A dissertation submitted In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology University of Helsinki Faculty of Theology August 2013 Copyright © 2013 by Anja-Leena Laitakari-Pyykkö To the memory of my beloved husband, Tauno Pyykkö ii Abstract Philip Melanchthon’s Influence on English Theological Thought during the Early English Reformation By Anja-Leena Laitakari-Pyykkö This study addresses the theological contribution to the English Reformation of Martin Luther’s friend and associate, Philip Melanchthon. The research conveys Melanchthon’s mediating influence in disputes between Reformation churches, in particular between the German churches and King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1539. The political background to those events is presented in detail, so that Melanchthon’s place in this history can be better understood. This is not a study of Melanchthon’s overall theology. In this work, I have shown how the Saxons and the conservative and reform-minded English considered matters of conscience and adiaphora. I explore the German and English unification discussions throughout the negotiations delineated in this dissertation, and what they respectively believed about the Church’s authority over these matters during a tumultuous time in European history. The main focus of this work is adiaphora, or those human traditions and rites that are not necessary to salvation, as noted in Melanchthon’s Confessio Augustana of 1530, which was translated into English during the Anglo-Lutheran negotiations in 1536. Melanchthon concluded that only rituals divided the Roman Church and the Protestants. -

However it was not until I was transcribing and researching Sabine’s correspondence with Evelyn Healey 1 that I realised from a reference to the chapter on Paulinism in a letter to her dated 12 October 1923 that he was actually working on this book during the last year of his life. -

General Editor: PA TRICK McGRATH Assistant General Editor: PETER HARRIS The Suppression of the Religious Houses in Bristol is the seventy fourth pamphlet to be published by the Bristol Branch of the Historical Association. Its author, Dr Joseph Bettey, is Reader in History in the Department of Continuing Education of the Univer sity of Bristol. He is very well-known as a lecturer and as a THE SUPPRESSION OF THE broadcaster, and his publications include The Suppression of the RELIGIOUS HOUSES Monasteries in the West Country. The illustration on the front cover shows the former Augusti IN BRISTOL nian Abbey church from the north-east. Work on building the nave had only just begun when the house was suppressed in 1539. The former abbey became the cathedral of the new diocese of Bristol in 1542. The church remained without a nave for more than Joseph Bettey three centuries. This view of 1821 shows the houses formerly on the site of the nave. It is taken from William Dugdale's Monas ticon Anglicanum (1830 edition, vol. vi). The next pamphlet in the series will deal with John Wesley in Bristol and will be by Dr Kenneth Morgan. Publication of a pamphlet by the Bristol Branch of the Historical Association does not necessarily imply the Branch's approval of the opinions expressed in it. -

THROUGH the kindness of a friend, a member of our Society, I was lately placed in the possession of a MS. bearing the title, " A List of Chancellors of the Diocese of Rochester," said to be written by Dr. A. C. Ducarel; but on examining the handwriting I am strongly of opinion that the list and notes were compiled and written by Dr. John Denne (Archdeacon of Rochester 1728—1767), and were only corrected and annotated by Dr. Ducarel. The fact that such numerous references are made in the MS. to entries in the Registers at Rochester, to which the Archdeacon would have had ready access, confirms this view, and it is supported by other internal evidence, and espe- cially by a note which occurs with regard to Dr. Win. Llewyn (Chancellor 1580—1598), in which the an- notator, whom I take to be without doubt Dr. Ducarel, directly refers to the Archdeacon as the writer of the memoir. In preparing the MS. for the press I have abso- lutely adhered to the original spelling of the names of persons and parishes, and I have only added a few notes, and some slight account of the Chancellors who have held office since Archdeacon Denne's time, so as to bring the list down to the present day. At Canterbury and London Christian churches, imagined to have been built by believing Romans or Britons, were repaired and restored to their original use; but it is most likely there was not any fabric at Rochester adapted to that purpose, because king Ethelbert is said to have raised a church from the foundation [a]. No description of this church is to be met with in any chronicle or register of the see of Roches= ter, nor are any other parts of it even mentioned than those in which three of the very early bishops are supposed to have been buried; Paulinus in or before the sacristy [b], Ithamar in the nave [c], and Tobias in the portico of St. Paul, made by himself for the place of his se= pulchre [d]. The Afterlife of the Dissolution of the English
“A Pitiful Thing”? The Afterlife of the Dissolution of the English Monasteries in Early Modern Chronicles, c. 1540 – c. 1640 Harriet Lyon Christ’s College, University of Cambridge ABSTRACT: Modern scholarship on the dissolution of the monasteries (1536-40) has paid little attention to how it was remembered by those who witnessed it or to the evolution of this memory in subsequent generations. Speaking to a growing interest in the memory of the Reformation, this article explores the afterlife of the dissolution in early modern chronicles, which have too often been themselves neglected as an outdated genre of historical writing. It focuses on three interrelated texts: Charles Wriothesley's manuscript chronicle, John Stow's “Annales of England” (1592), and Edmund Howes's editions of the “Annales” (1615, 1631). Using this case study, the article traces how the cultural memory of the dissolution was transformed according to the proclivities of individual chroniclers and with the changing preoccupations of successive generations. In doing so, it suggests the conventional historiography has fallen victim to Henrician narratives of the expediency and insignificance of the dissolution. Contemporary memorializing practices, it contends, may provide the key to recovering its significance as one of the most controversial events of the Henrician Reformation. * * * 2 The dissolution of the monasteries was one of the earliest and most visible manifestations of the Reformation in England. Yet despite its transformative effect on religious, social, and cultural life, historians have paid little attention to how the events of 1536-40 were remembered by those who experienced them or to the evolution of this memory in subsequent generations. -

To specify all the authorities which have been made use of in each case would be difficult and tedious in this place. EASTWARD from Stroud, on the opposite side of the river Medway, lies THE CITY OF ROCHESTER, situated on an angle of land formed by that river, which coming from the south runs northward until it has passed the city, after which it directs its course due east. The jurisdiction of this city was antiently called the hundred of Rochester./q /q See Reg. Roff. p. 49. 46 ROCHESTER was a place of some note in the time of the Romans, owing to its situation at the accustomed pass over the river Medway. It was probably called by the Britons Durobrivæ, from the British word Dour Water, and the termination Briva, which is added to the old names of many places, and might signify among the antient Britons and Gauls, a bridge, or passage over a river; since it is no where used, but in the names of places situated like this at rivers./r Antoninus, in his Itinerary, calls it by the name of Durobrivis, though it is corruptly spelt various ways in the different copies of it. In the Peutingerian military tables, in the decline of the Roman empire, it is writ= ten Roibis; from which contracted, and the addition of the word ceaster (derived from the Latin, castrum, used by our Saxon ancestors to signify a city, town or castle) they called it Hroueceaster, and by a further con= traction, Rochester,/s and here it is to be observed, that all places ending in chester, fashioned in the Saxon times, have arisen from the ruins of the old Roman castra, not that the former were always placed in the very same scite, though they were never very remote from it./t Hence the antient stations about the noted Roman wall, the ruins of many of which are still vi= sible, are called chesters by the country people.
