Increased security surveillance and patrols does not mean freedom from attacks. In East Africa, the state of Puntland officially banned IUU fishing, terminating all licenses previously granted, making all foreign fishing vessels illegal - two weeks to comply. From academic and financial to editorial and emotional, I was never lacking in support. I am truly thankful, not to mention lucky. Sarah Burns, my advisor and mentor, supported my ideas, cheered my successes, and patiently edited and helped me to revise my failures. I also owe her thanks for encouraging me to pursue an unorthodox topic. From the moment pirates came up during one of our meetings in the spring of 2005, I was hooked. She knew it, and she continuously suggested ways to expand the idea first into an independent study, and then into this dissertation. My dissertation committee – Janet Kennedy, Patrick McNaughton, and Beverly Stoeltje – likewise deserves my thanks for their mentoring and enthusiasm. Other scholars have graciously shared with me their knowledge and input along the way. David M. Lubin read a version of my third chapter and gave me helpful advice, opening up to me new ways of thinking about Howard Pyle in particular. -
The Wicked Wench." in the Han Solo Trilogy I Was Privileged to Write the Scene Where Han First Beheld -- and Fell for -- the Millennium Falcon
Here's the fifth excerpt, which is actually the beginning of Chaper 6, titled "The Wicked Wench." In the Han Solo Trilogy I was privileged to write the scene where Han first beheld -- and fell for -- the Millennium Falcon. What a thrill! And it was every bit as much of a thrill to write the following scene, I assure you! In April I'll post the sixth and final excerpt from the novel...the one where Jack takes his first (and possibly only!) BATH. Only about eight weeks to go before the release date! -------------------------------- Jack Sparrow had never thought it would happen to him. All his life, he‟d heard people speak of love—mostly men, of course, since he‟d spent the majority of his life at sea, and there were few women who chose that life. Life on the sea was a male-dominated occupation, whether the sailors were pirates or seamen aboard a merchant ship or the crew of a naval vessel. There were the rare—and refreshing—exceptions, of course, such as Esmeralda, lovely Esmeralda . Men were self-conscious about referring to love. They were often given to enthused bragging regarding their carnal adventures and conquests, but when they referred to love, it was usually in a hushed whisper, or a mumble. Sometimes an awed murmur, if the poor chap was embarrassingly besotted. Jack wanted to shout his adoration aloud—and he would have, too, if he hadn‟t had a certain dignity to maintain. But ever since that day when he‟d seen her, he‟d thought of her with . -

DVD Piracy As Alternative Media: the Scandal of Piracy, and the Piracy of “Scandal” in the Philippines, 2005–2009
MARIA F. MANGAHAS 109 Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies 2014 29 (1): 109–139 DVD Piracy as Alternative Media: The Scandal of Piracy, and the Piracy of “Scandal” in the Philippines, 2005–2009 MARIA F. MANGAHAS ABSTRACT. Some digital materials which are documentary of specific forms of social transgression comprise an apparent “market niche” for piracy. “Scandals” as unique commodities in the Philippines’s informal market for pirated disks are quite distinct from other digital entertainment, being originally candid/unstaged or “stolen”/taken without their subject’s knowledge and usually made to non-professional standards/ equipment. Enterprisingly put on the market by pirate-entrepreneurs because of apparent consumer-audience interest in the content, such unique “reality” goods became conveniently available through networks of digital piracy outlets. In the context of consumption of pirated goods, the article reads “scandals” as expressive of everyday critique and resistance. The niche market for “scandals” functions as alternative media as these digital goods inherently evade government and (formal) corporate control as sources of news and entertainment. Indicators of the significance of “scandal” in the informal economy and the meaningful convergence between its piracy and consumer- audience demand are examined ethnographically: their translation into commodities through packaging, the range of sites for consumers to access “scandals,” pirate- entrepreneurs’ sales strategies and standards, and how the market behavior of these “scandals” apparently responded to the unfolding of the social scandals in real time as current events—events that themselves were influenced by the popular circulation and piracy of these commodities. Three cases that took place between 2005–2009—“Hello Garci,” the “Kat/Kho sex scandals,” and the “Maguindanao massacre” DVD—serve as diverse examples, each with their own issues of authenticity, morality, and social effects consequent to piracy and consumption. -
We Need More Jack Sparrow, Savvy?
We Need More Jack Sparrow, Savvy? A Swashbuckler’s Guide to System Modeling With SysML Michael J. Vinarcik, ESEP-Acq, OCSMP-Model Builder—Advanced Booz Allen Hamilton 2016 International Council on Systems Engineering Great Lakes Regional Conference Copyright © 2016 by Michael J. Vinarcik. Permission granted to INCOSE to publish and use. Why do projects overspend and overrun? “Why do so many big projects overspend and overrun? They’re managed as if they were merely complicated when in fact they are complex. They’re planned as if everything was known at the start when in fact they involve high levels of uncertainty and risk.” Architecting Systems: Concepts, Principles and Practice, Hillary Sillitto, Back cover What is the issue? • System complexity has grown to the point where no single individual can have deep, thorough understanding of every system element and its: – Attributes – Behaviors – Roles – Interactions WHAT ARE WE TO DO? MODEL THE SYSTEM! System modeling • System modeling enables the codification of subject matter expertise in a clear, unambiguous format. It enables the creation of a “single repository of technical truth” that an entire development team can draw upon to have timely, relevant, and useful information in the execution of its tasks. • Lockheed Martin speakers have elaborated on this further and call it the “weaving of a digital tapestry.” This is an apt metaphor, since a comprehensive system model is not just a single thread of information but a rich, multi-dimensional representation of the system of interest. How to do it? • If we agree that constructing system model is the right way to handle the both the complicated and complex nature of modern systems, the “how” is critically important. -
All Decked out Updated Pirates of the Caribbean Ride at Disneyland Sails on Amid Mixed Reviews from Purists and Pundits
All decked out Updated Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland sails on amid mixed reviews from purists and pundits By Laura Mecoy -- Bee Los Angeles Bureau Published 12:01 am PDT Sunday, July 2, 2006 Story appeared in Travel section, Page M1 The Wicked Wench pirate ship, a set piece in Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, gleams after refurbishments. Disney Enterprises ANAHEIM -- Shiver me timbers! Thar be changes ter one of yer favorite Disneyland rides, Pirates of the Caribbean, 'n' sum lily-livered fans are ready ter mutiny over 'em. Tha' scalawag, Cap'n Jack Sparrow, who's bin prancin' roun' on movie screens, ha' joined the pillagin' and pilferin' pirates, along with tha' scurvy bilge rat Barbossa an' tha' dreaded Davy Jones. But avast, me hearties! The Bee be pleased ter say it signed up its own crew o' wee beauties 'n' buccaneers fer a first look-see, and they ha' a message for ye complainin' ol' salts: "Yo! Chill, dude." In a cool-headed appraisal of the "enhanced" pirates ride Disney reopened on Monday, my 12- year-old son, Ryan Walker, declared: "It's not that different." "I wished they'd changed it more," his 8-year-old sister, Grace, said. "It just looks like the old ride. It was kind of boring." Cole Feaster, an 11-year-old critic on The Bee's crew, wanted a faster ride, while 7-year-old Claire Regenstreif thought Disney should have updated all the pirates. "Most of the old ones were dirty and gross," she said. The kid critics are Southern California-resident Disneyland veterans who have been to the park countless times and count among their favorite flicks the 2003 blockbuster inspired by the ride, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." Come about, full! With the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel "Dead Man's Chest" set to open nationwide Friday, the concept has gone full circle so that the movies now are inspiring the pirate ride. -

Disney Cruise Line Fun Facts
Disney Cruise Line Fun Facts Uniquely Disney • The Disney ships are painted in Mickey Mouse-inspired colors – black hull, white superstructure, yellow trim and two giant red funnels, each with the Disney Cruise Line Mickey Mouse logo. • Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line to have yellow lifeboats, instead of the traditional regulation orange. Disney was granted special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard to paint the lifeboats yellow, to keep with the special color theming of the ship. • The Disney Magic was built in two halves… one hundred miles apart! Part of the ship was constructed in Ancona, Italy then towed 100 miles to meet the stern in Marghera (just outside Venice) to be perfectly joined and welded together. • Disney Cruise Line ships use the iconic first seven notes of the “When You Wish Upon a Star” song melody as their horn signals. • Disney ships are the only cruise ships to have five captains – the ship’s captain, Captain Mickey, Captain Minnie, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow. • Measuring 964 feet in length, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are each longer than Main Street U.S.A at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. At 1,115 feet, the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and longer than the height of New York City’s famous Chrysler Building. • The anchor on the Disney Magic weighs 28,200 pounds – about the same as three full-grown elephants. • On a special night aboard most Disney cruises, the “Pirates IN the Caribbean” deck party features a spectacular pyrotechnics performance – fireworks at sea like only Disney can do! Guest Experience • Eighty-eight percent of the staterooms on the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream and more than 70 percent of staterooms on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have ocean views.
