Edgecombe, Centre for Evolutionary Research, Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney South, New South Wales 2000, Australia Character analysis is the single most important element of any phylogenetic study. Characters are simply criteria for comparing homologous organismic parts between taxa. Homology of organismic parts in any phylogenetic study is an a priori assumption, founded upon topological similarity through some or all stages of ontogeny. Once homolo- gies have been suggested, characters are invented by specifying bases of comparison of organismic parts from taxon to taxon within the study group. Ideally, all variation in a single homology occurring within the study group should be accounted for. Comparisons are between attributes of homologous parts, (e.g., simple presence, size of some- thing, number of something), and these attributes are referred to as character states. Study taxa are assigned member- ship in one (or more, in the case of polymorphisms) character-state for each character in the analysis. A single char- acter now implies discrete groupings of taxa, but this in itself does not constitute a phylogeny. In order to suggest or convey phylogenetic information, the historical status of each character-state, and of the the group of taxa it sug- gests, must be evaluated. That is, in the case of any two states belonging to the same character, we need to discover whether one state is primitive (broadly speaking, ancestral) or derived (representative of an evolutionary innovation) relative to the other.

Bailey Department of Geology, College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA William Burton U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia 22092, USA ABSTRACT This fi eld guide covers a two-day east-to-west transect of the Blue Ridge and Valley and Ridge provinces of northwestern Virginia and eastern West Virginia, in the context of an integrated approach to teaching stratigraphy, structural analysis, and regional tectonics. Holistic, systems-based approaches to these topics incorpo- rate both deductive (stratigraphic, structural, and tectonic theoretical models) and inductive (fi eld observations and data collection) perspectives. Discussions of these pedagogic approaches are integral to this fi eld trip. Day 1 of the fi eld trip focuses on Mesoproterozoic granitoid basement (associated with the Grenville orogeny) and overlying Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian cover rocks (Iapetan rifting) of the greater Blue Ridge province. These units collectively form a basement-cored anticlinorium that was thrust over Paleozoic strata of the Val- ley and Ridge province during Alleghanian contractional tectonics. Day 2 traverses a foreland thrust belt that consists of Cambrian to Ordovician carbonates (Iapetan divergent continental margin), Middle to Upper Ordovician immature clastics (asso- ciated with the Taconic orogeny), Silurian to Lower Devonian quartz arenites and car- bonates (inter-orogenic tectonic calm), and Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian clastic rocks (associated with the Acadian orogeny).

E-mail: [email protected] Received: Mach 22, 2018 Accepted: April 9, 2018 Online Published: April 25, 2018 doi:10.5539/mas.v12n5p34 URL: https://doi.org/10.5539/mas.v12n5p34 Abstract This study analyzes a Japanese mobile phone e-mail data corpus (created by the researcher) of 43,295 Keitai-mail exchanged for the purpose of personal communication by 60 young people aged 18 to 30 who are familiar with Keitai-mail practices. The result shows that the Keitai-mail analyzed consists on average of approximately 40 moji (symbols) including 3 emoticons per message, showing that composition is short but not overly abrupt – generally Keitai-mail does not finish in the middle of a sentence. Non-standard textual elements, language plays (LP) such as emoticons, long vowel symbols, irregular use of small moji, and non-standard use of each type of script (e.g., use of Katakana instead of Kanji) are found to be governed by the conventions of Standard Japanese and are not totally random occurrences. Spears Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy, Division of Geology and Mineral Resources, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903, USA ABSTRACT The central Appalachians form a classic orogen whose structural architecture developed during episodes of contractional, extensional, and transpressional defor- mation from the Proterozoic to the Mesozoic. These episodes include components of the Grenville orogenic cycle, the eastern breakup of Rodinia, Appalachian orogenic cycles, the breakup of Pangea, and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean basin. This fi eld trip examines an array of rocks deformed via both ductile and brittle processes from the deep crust to the near-surface environment, and from the Mesoproterozoic to the present day. The trip commences in suspect terranes of the eastern Piedmont in central Vir- ginia, and traverses northwestward across the Appalachian orogen through the thick- skinned Blue Ridge basement terrane, and into the thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belt of the Valley and Ridge geologic province. The traverse covers a range of deformation styles that developed over a vast span of geologic time: from high-grade metamorphic rocks deformed deep within the orogenic hinterland, to sedimentary rocks of the fore- land that were folded, faulted, and cleaved in the late Paleozoic, to brittle extensional structures that overprint many of these rocks.

Cho recently lost the Honindo to Takao with only 2 wins in the 6 games played. Cho’s record again Takao (see table below sourced from http://gobase.org/information/games/) could be better – out of 9 games played there are 6 wins for Takao compared to 3 for Cho. The 31st Mejin was shaping up much the same, with Takao winning the first two games. Cho U proved he was not a pushover with a decisive win in the 3rd game. Grace Wilmarth, published in 1938 and reprinted in 1951 and 1957, met a long standing need and continuing demand for a compilation of geologic names. Plans made for future compilations as new names and revisions appeared were interrupted during the years of World War II. In 1952 a sustained effort was begun toward review of geo­ logic publications necessary to furnish a background for preparation of a new edition. After the review was brought up to date in 1956, the present compilation was prepared in order to furnish to the geo­ logic profession, as quickly as possible, some of the essential data concerning the new names that have appeared since 1935.
