The Aboriginal people in the 1930s and 40s were moved to another location because of European visitation to the then Ayers Rock area and issues of Aboriginal children being taken away from families. Schools are now camping out with Aborigines as Aboriginal cultural learning experiences. Continue south towards Mount Woodroffe (Ngaruijaranya), South Australia’s highest mountain. You are now in APY Lands (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara). Your next stop will be Pukatja, once called Ernabella, a Presbyterian Mission. The Ernabella Mission was established by the Presbyterian Church in the Musgrave Ranges of north-west South Australia in 1937. A school operated at the Mission. In 1970 the State Government took administrative control of the Mission and in 1972 this transferred to the Commonwealth Government. In 1974 the administration of Ernabella Mission passed to the Pitjantjatjara Council. It was later renamed Pukatja. An indigenous guide will be joining you this day to enhance your learning experience. Your overnight accommodation is at Umuwa South Australia’s most northern town, an administrative centre for the nearby communities. Meals: Morning Tea, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner Accommodation: Umuwa - Premium = 2 star available only or Safari = twin share tent Day 2 APY Lands, Community Visits, Ernabella Art Gallery, Church & Schools This morning visit an interesting project by the Federal and State Governments - The Trade Training Centre for Secondary School Students in Umuwa. This centre addresses the Indigenous low accredited skill base and will therefore increase opportunity for pathways into employment on the APY Lands. Also visit Pukatja to learn about Ernabella Art, Ernabella Choir and life today in a larger community. After lunch visit Kenmore Park, an extremely well resourced primary school, where you could meet the school principal and an APY Land’s Elder. The majority of students at Kenmore Park are Anangu and their first language is Pitjantjatjara or Yankunytjatjara as this is usually the language spoken at home. The students are only introduced to English when they start school. A significant factor for Anangu Communities and Schools is the transient nature of the population - the school can have students who attend for periods of days or weeks and then return to their home communities. Return to Umuwa for tonight’s accommodation. Meals: Breakfast, Morning Tea, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner Accommodation: Umuwa - Premium = 2 star available only or Safari = twin share tent Day 3 Homelands, Outback Cattle Stations & The Stuart Highway The local guide may show you some additional sacred sites before you say farewell then travel across Victory Downs Cattle Station. Join the Stuart Highway at Kulgera, a small settlement with a town population of approximately 20. On your return journey to Alice detour into Rainbow Valley and into Simpson Desert Country as you follow The Ghan Railway track north to rejoin the Stuart Highway. The main features of the Rainbow Valley area are the scenic sandstone bluffs and cliffs. These free standing cliffs form part of the James Range, and are particularly attractive in the early morning and late afternoon when the rainbow-like rock bands are highlighted. The coloured rock bands in the sandstone cliffs were caused by water. In earlier wetter times, the red iron of the sandstone layers was dissolved and drawn to the surface during the Dry Season. On arrival at Alice Springs you will be taken to your overnight accommodation.
