The fact, how- ever, is that it is more apt to describe Jim’s achieve- ments as massive. When he started at the end of 2000 the SAIW was really a very small organisation with no international rec- ognition of its courses, it was struggling financial- ly and was fully reliant on sponsorship for its income. In short it was hardly a going concern. Today it is the leading welding training organ- isation on the continent and is self-sufficient. Its courses are recognised internationally; it has more than doubled its training population and has earned the respect of the global welding com- munity. “I put our successes down to exceptional team work,” says Guild. “I am confident that this team- work will continue under the expert and experi- enced guidance of Sean Blake. I wish them all the best for the future,” he said. Blake says he is excited about his new po- sition. “Jim did incredible work and leaves behind an excellent foundation on which we can grow the organisation. I look for- ward to the challenge,” Blake concluded. CBN May 2015 23 CUTTING, WELDING & BONDING Murray & Roberts Western Cape’s diverse order book Continued from P14

It has currently been tested to con- firm a three-year shelf life, with the recom- mended shelf life ex- pected to increase to five years when tests are concluded. Belzona 7111 re- quires neither hot work nor specialist tools dur- ing application. Once cured, this chocking compound exhibits high load-bearing capacity, while providing precise equipment alignment, dampening machine noise and vibration, and preventing loosening of threaded bolts. These characteristics make it ideal for pour- ing foundations for ship propulsion systems and other heavy equipment, where alignment and anchorage are essen- tial. Since machining of foundations is not required when this product is used, the cost and time for machin- ery installation can be reduced significantly. The American Bu- reau of Shipping (ABS) has approved Belzona 7111 for marine appli- cations such as chock- ing, backing and level- ling in engines, pumps, generators, compres- sors, reduction gears, bearing blocks, crane rails and other machin- ery. The compound has also been approved to be used in constructions built under the Lloyd’s Register’s survey. Commenting on the ABS approval, Dr. Xi Chen, Belzona’s vice president of research and development said, “It is significant testi- mony that Belzona 7111 meets the highest qual- ity and performance standards set forth by the marine industry.” Belzona 7111 has an excellent load bear- ing capability that is demonstrated by the compound’s compara- bly high compressive strength. Tested in ac- cordance with ASTM D695, compressive yield strength meas- ures at 14930 psi (102.9 MPa) and compressive modulus at 5.75 x 105 psi (3964 MPa.) Providing trained service person- nel and beneficiation experts result in opti- misation opportunities for the customer in reducing the cost per ton of product, as well as continuing to differ- entiate Weir Minerals in the market. Another major opportunity lies in optimising Brown- field plants by means of the new HPGR tech- nology, thus enabling them to treat ore more economically and ef- fectively,” Dr. Matthies says. Extensive testwork undertaken by Weir Minerals in Germany gave the green light for dry air classifica- tion in tandem with HPGR technology. The end result is a closed HPGR circuit, which results in twice the amount of fine end product as well as much lower energy consump- tion compared to a tra- ditional milling circuit. “Conditions do have to be taken into con- sideration, however, and not all opportu- nities will be suitable. An open mind and some innovative think- ing are a prerequisite. We are partnering with German mineral processing universi- ties such as the Uni- versity of Freiberg to better understand the relationship of very fine material and its moisture content,” Dr. Matthies says. The critical aspect from a customer’s point of view is on-go- ing technical support, longevity of wear com- ponents and the speed of the change-out of the HPGR rolls. “We continue to drive devel- opment in this area and believe our studded tyre technology, pio- neered by KHD Hum- boldt Wedag, global support network and swing frame design for quick roll change-out currently surpasses our
