Let's Create Cardboard Sculptures
Let’s Create Cardboard Sculptures Use recycled materials to create a monochromatic sculpture inspired by the assemblage artworks of Louise Nevelson What is Monochromatic? All the colors used in the art project are of a single hue. DID YOU KNOW: Louise Nevelson often used black in her sculptures. What is Assemblage? (pronounced ah·sem·blahj) A form of sculpture comprised of objects found in the world, often everyday objects (man-made or organic), that are arranged by the artist to create a 3-D artwork. Activity Young artists will work with found cardboard objects and paint to create a monochromatic sculpture within a box frame. The students will assemble the found objects to create positive and negative spaces and explore how light and shadow can enhance their sculptures. Materials • Cardboard box (with the top removed) to be used as a frame • Mix of different types of cardboard (shipping boxes, paper towel and toilet paper tubes, egg crates, etc.) • Scissors • Artists glue or a hot glue gun with glue sticks • Black or White paint and paintbrushes (optional) • Newspaper or tarp to protect your work surfaces. The reforms of the second half of the 19 th to early 20 th century are of particular importance. As their immediate result was the creation of an extensive credit system for agricultural producers, which was very effective at that time. The article describes the main types of financial resources used by agricultural producers in Ukraine at the turn of the 19 th and 20 th century. The analysis of statistical data confirms the idea of the extraordinary vitality of small family-owned agricultural enterprises. In such places there has always been the possibility of replenishing a modest budget through both economic activity and handicraft industries, as well as loans of different origins. The use of historical experience can be extremely useful for increasing the competitiveness in both domestic and foreign markets. Introduction The era of deep and comprehensive economic reforms in Russia, the beginning of which goes back to the period of the abolition of serfdom in 1861 is of considerable public interest. -

Modes of Reading Texts, Objects, and Images: Late Poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz by Olga Ponichtera A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto © Copyright by Olga Ponichtera 2015 Modes of Reading Texts, Objects, and Images: Late Poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz Olga Ponichtera Doctor of Philosophy Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation explores the late oeuvre of Tadeusz Różewicz (1921-2014), a world- renowned Polish poet, dramatist, and prose writer. It focuses primarily on three poetic and multi-genre volumes published after the political turn of 1989, namely: Mother Departs (Matka Odchodzi) (1999), professor’s knife (nożyk profesora) (2001), and Buy a Pig in a Poke: work in progress (Kup kota w worku: work in progress) (2008). The abovementioned works are chosen as exemplars of the writer’s authorial strategies / modes of reading praxis, prescribed by Różewicz for his ideal audience. These strategies simultaneously reveal the poet himself as a reader (of his own texts and the works of other authors). This study defines an author’s late style as a response to the cognitive and aesthetic evaluation of one’s life’s work, artistic legacy, and metaphysical angst of mortality. Różewicz’s late works are characterized by a tension between recognition and reconciliation to closure, and difficulty with it and/or opposition to it. Authorial construction of lyrical subjectivity as a reader, and modes of textual construction are the central questions under analysis. This study examines both, Tadeusz Różewicz as a reader, and the authorial strategies/ modes he creates to guide the reading praxis of the authorial audience. -

Rather than projecting today’s political borders into the past and proceeding from the claim that the Cossacks are either Russian or Ukrainian, this comparative project analyzes the nineteenth-century narratives that transform pre- national Cossack history into national patrimony. Following the Romantic era debates about national identity in the Russian empire, during which the Cossacks become part of both Ukrainian and Russian national self-definition, this dissertation focuses on the role of historical narrative in these burgeoning political projects. -

The primary focus in the work’s second part is on the government’s policy on preschool, primary, and secondary education. The key sources employed in the work are materials from the period’s periodical press, memoirs by contemporaries of the events, and published statutory enactments of the government of the Ukrainian State regulating policy on primary and secondary education. It is in the year 1918 that the primary, secondary, and higher education systems in the Ukrainian State were formalized legally. -

UKRAINIAN URBAN POPULATION OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE: ETHNIC AND LINGUISTIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE LATE 19th CENTURY Olga KAZAKEVYCH National Pedagogical Dragomanov University, Kyiv, Ukraine E-mail : [email protected] Rezumat: Populaţia urbană ucraineană din Imperiul Rus: mutaţii etnice și lingvistice la finele secolului al XIX-lea. Articolul analizează structura etnică și lingvistică a populaţiei urbane din Imperiul Ţarist. Sunt valorificate datele statistice, inclusiv rezultatele celui dintâi Recensământ general al populaţiei Imperiului Rus, din anul 1897, și ale unor recensăminte locale, organizate în unele orașe ucrainene în anii ’70 ai secolului al XIX-lea. Analiza lor comparativă este importantă pentru înţelegerea efectelor politicii de asimilare culturală realizate de autorităţile imperiale, precum și a premiselor mutaţiilor din structura populaţiei urbane. Autoarea indică cauzele descreșterii ponderii ucrainenilor în totalul populaţiei urbane la sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea. Résumé: La population urbaine ukrainienne de l’Empire Russe: mutations ethniques et linguistiques à la fin du XIX-ème siècle. L’article ci-joint analyse la structure ethnique et linguistique de la population urbaine de l’Empire Tsariste. On y mit en valeur les données statistiques, y compris les résultats du premier Recensement général de la population de l’Empire Russe de l’année 1897 et de quelques recensements locaux, organisés dans les villes ukrainiennes les années ’70 du XIX-ème siècle. Leur analyse comparative est importante, aussi, pour la compréhension, des effets de la politique d’assimilation culturelle que les autorités impériales réalisèrent, ainsi que des prémisses des mutations de la structure de la population urbaine. L’auteur y indiqua les causes de la diminution de la part de population ukrainienne du total de la population urbaine à la fin du XIX-ème siècle. -
