The center is located directly within the riot area immediately following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Week of Blessings The Steinbruck Center is a place that educates and provides the outreach work for groups such as ours, putting us with the many great ministries in D.C. that serve the hungry and seek justice for the poor. The Washington, DC 2012 Mission Trip Steinbruck Center is named after its founder, John Steinbruck, the pastor of Luther Place Memorial Church before, during, and after the riot years. The Steinbruck Center shows the number of people and resources that are necessary to help address homelessness and hunger in its community. The Steinbruck Center itself houses a 30 person shelter for women and a hostel for visiting missionaries to stay and then volunteer in the “Kids are amazing gifts from God. community. Faster Alone: Farther Together On Sunday night we had to eat dinner for just $1.00 per person. This was an exercise to give us an idea of what people who live on food stamps have to deal with on a daily basis. Many food stamp recipients only get $3.00 per day per person. Sunday morning at the worship service at Martin Luther Memorial Place Pastor Karen Braun said, “We can go faster alone, but farther together.” We applied that theory to We left for Washington, D.C. on Saturday, July 14. One of the participants in the mission trip didn’t really get much to each at all, because spaghetti isn’t really the best meal for someone with diabetes. Providing a healthy diet for people is as important as it is difficult. The biggest grocery store in the neighborhood was very expensive. We shopped there once. There were convenience stores, but they too, as you know, are expensive and don’t stock many healthy foods. There weren’t very many other grocery stores. From a strictly economic point of view, I suppose it’s hard to make a profit selling groceries to poor people. Bottom line: it often happens that poor people don’t have access to affordable and health food. --Pastor Larry
