Issue 19 RaimiThe University of Montana N Student reps to join in stand against tuition increases By Kathy McLaughlin Kaimin Reporter Students will plead their case Thursday morning to the State Board of Regents against a tuition increase in January, the vice president of ASUM said Wednesday. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • The Hot Chicks of Rock
The Hot Chicks of Rock The adrenaline rush of Super Bowl week has started to kick in and it is starting to feel like I’m on a Benzedrine overload. Late night and early morning spent reading the re-writes of the previous days blurbs that all blend together to the point that the only thing I remember is something in I read stating that Bill Belichick will murder Tom Coughlin. Whatever your feelings are on football, it is still a great excuse to throw a party. As far as Super Bowl Parties go, it is tough to top the PVD Social Club’s bill of a matinee punk rock headlined by iconic stalwarts of loud hard and fast, the Hudson Falcons and Boston’s The Ducky Boys (Record Release Party for Chasing the Ghost). The bill is also features Pinkerton Thugs, Drunk Robb and The Shots, and Reason to Fight. The show is all ages and will not interfere with watching the game because it starts at 2PM– so if you are like me, set an alarm, or two. Not only is this the perfect way to release some pre-show aggression but you can stay or come for the game, which will be shown on huge projection screens throughout the entire club. At halftime, there will be a burlesque show so you have something more enticing than watching a washed up Madonna and there will be complementary appetizers served. Seriously, Madonna playing the Super Bowl, what diehard football fan wants to see that? Speaking of burlesque, with Valentine’s Day around that corner, it is time for our 5th annual Hot Women in Local Rock to celebrate this special day, well for single males and women in relationships.

When we began publishing whatzup as a free-distribution arts and entertainment weekly in August of 1996, we had no notion that the internet would completely alter theF way newspapers and magazines would do business, or that a good number of long- established print publications would either go out of business or struggle to exist as mere shadows of their former selves. We at whatzup may be stubborn, but we’re not stupid, and so, once we saw the writ- ing on the wall, we began making plans for surviving and thriving in the digital age. The first task was to develop a website that would deliver the content whatzup readers sought in a comprehensive, yet easily navigated way, and the fact that whatzup.com draws approximately 2,000 unique daily visitors is evidence that we’ve managed to do 90 YEARS that fairly effectively. The rise of mobile connectivity and social media has presented yet another challenge, and after four years of continuous effort and any number of false starts and setbacks, we OF FILM are at long last releasing the whatzup app, a tool that makes it easier than ever before A nostalgic film series for anyone and everyone in northeast Indiana to know whatzup at any given time and place.
