  • Locations Guide for the Light Keeper's Legacy
Locations Guide for The Light Keeper’s Legacy Book 3 in the Chloe Ellefson Historic Sites Mystery Series Written by Bestselling Author Kathleen Ernst Published by Midnight Ink Books An Island’s History Holds Clues to a Modern Mystery Museum curator Chloe Ellefson jumps at the chance to spend time on Wisconsin’s Rock Island, a state park with no electricity or roads. On temporary assignment from Old World Wisconsin to consult on restoring the island’s historic lighthouse, her research turns up tough-as-nails women from the past. Chloe’s tranquility is spoiled when a dead woman washes ashore. Is it an accidental drowning, or has tension over tighter fishing regulations reached a dangerous boiling point? When a second body is found, Chloe finds herself trapped with a killer on remote Rock Island. Author Kathleen Ernst writes at the intersection of people, places, and the past. That is especially true of her award-winning Chloe Ellefson Historic Sites series. This guide has been developed to help readers locate and learn about the places where key scenes in The Light Keeper’s Legacy are set. All the locations in the book are real—and can be visited. The two main characters in the series are Chloe Ellefson and Roelke McKenna. They reside and work in the southeast corner of Wisconsin. Chloe lives in the rural farming community of LaGrange and works as curator of collections at Old World Wisconsin, a large outdoor history museum just south of the Village of Eagle. Roelke (pronounced Rell-key) lives in the nearby village of Palmyra, and is employed as an officer with the Eagle Police Department.

Chapter 3: The Environment Chapter 3: The Environment In this chapter: Introduction Climate Island Types, Geology and Soils Archeological and Cultural Values Social and Economic Context Environmental Contaminants Natural Resources Associated Plans and Initiatives Habitat Management Visitor Services Archaeological and Cultural Resources Management Law Enforcement Throughout this document, five national wildlife refuges (NWRs, refuges) are discussed individually—such as the Gravel Island NWR or the Green Bay NWR. This document also discusses all five NWRs collectively as one entity and when doing so, refers to the group as the “Great Lakes islands refuges” or “Great Lakes islands NWRs.” Introduction General Island Geological and Ecological Background Michigan and Wisconsin are fortunate to have many islands that form a “waterscape” unlike any found elsewhere in the world. Of the three Upper Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, and Superior), there exists approximately 200 islands within the confines of the states in Lake Huron, 76 in Lake Michigan, and 175 in Lake Superior (not counting 86 in the St. Mary’s River) (Soule, 1993). The glacial history of island chains differs across the Upper Great Lakes. Glacial till overlying limestone bedrock forms the bulk of the Beaver Island group in northern Lake Michigan, although Pismire Island (part of Michigan Islands NWR) is an example of a sand and gravel bar island. Conversely, most islands in Lake Superior are formed of igneous and metamorphic bedrock, with the Huron Islands (of Huron NWR) being the result of granite upthrusts (Soule, 1993). Post-glacial history of these islands also varies. National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS, Refuge System) records indicate that many of the islands of Michigan Islands NWR were either impacted by human habitation (Gull Island) or by other uses (e.g., Hat Island was used as bombing range prior to refuge establishment) (Gates, 1950).

PREFACE TO 1974 EDITION The seven years since Death’s Door’s publication could hardly have flowed past without washing up a few more facts and insights. We suggest to the reader of this new edition that he glance at pages 29 through 32 before beginning the book. This will permit him to blend the new material with the original text. A simple fact may be of interest: Practically all known marine disasters laid at Death’s Door have been suffered in attempting to pass through the strait (chiefly in the days of sailing ships), while most local hardships and losses — and even the well-known legend itself — are concerned with attempts to cross the notorious passage. And although the Door’s threat has gradually diminished in the wake of technological progress, these waters still work their influence dn daily life in this vicinity. Those who live upon — and those who visit — the islands of Town of Washington can hardly be unaware even today of timeless Porte des Morts’ disturbing presence.
