LEVEL 2 - CASE STUDIES PROGRESSION TO LEVEL 3

DARRION BALL

Hello my name is Darrion Ball and I am 18 years of age. I have studied at the Warrior Sports College for a total of three years and I am now into my fourth. I took the vocational route in school and attended the academy one day per week over two years and completed a BTEC Level 2 in Sport. As this is a nationally recognised qualification, last year it helped me progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure. I am now qualified at level 2 as a Gym Instructor, Circuit Trainer and Sports Coach, all qualifications that will help me get a job in the future. After completing this course I applied and was accepted for a place with Warriors Education for the Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Sports Performance & Excellence. We started in September 13 and I am now close to completing my fourth Unit, the course is excellent and I know for what I want to achieve in the future, this course will help along to the path to a successful career in the fitness industry.

At the Sports College, it is not just class work, if you enjoy rugby then you have the opportunity to join play for the successful Warriors Rugby League Performance Squad against other colleges in the league and cup, I am proud to say that I am part of this squad now. We each have our own responsibilities in the team, I play full back and everyone pulls together to build a good bond throughout the whole squad. We train twice a week with our academy coaches and conditioner, outside of the games day and focus on fitness, gym work, ball work and team runs.

I am really enjoying my time here at the Warriors Sports College and would recommend their courses to anyone if they love sport, learning new things and playing rugby

THOMAS MARSH

Hi I am Thomas Marsh and I am currently on my 2nd year of study with Warriors Education. I attended Warriors Sports College during my school years 10 and 11, were I completed a Level 2 BTEC Sports course. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the academy, so for that reason after leaving school I enrolled on the Warriors ‘Level 2 Diploma in Sport & Active Leisure’. The qualifications I achieved through the course were a L2 fitness instructor, L2 circuit trainer and L2 sport coach. That course lasted one year and was a great way to gain experience in what I would like to do as a career, which is become a sports coach or a fitness instructor.

During the L2 course the tutors were really friendly and supportive, allowing us to enjoy our time at the academy and build a good bond between the students in our group, we could also speak to them about serious matters if needed. My time on Level 2 has really helped me with coping with work I now do on my BTEC Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Sport, for which I enrolled and started in September 13.

I am enjoying BTEC Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Sport, I have a really good tutor who helps everyone with understanding the work and assessments, but also supports me when I need it. My classmates have really bonded since we started in September 13, we all have a joke with each other including the tutor, but when it comes to the work we all get it done

The work at Level 3 is tough as we have deadlines to meet, but it’s just like any other college. I would certainly recommend the courses that the Warriors Sports College offer to 16-18 year olds, with great tutors and sports facilities, it makes it so much easier for students to achieve their goals

LEVEL 3 - CASE STUDIES PROGRESSION FROM LEVEL 3 INTO EMPLOYMENT

REBECCA VAUGHAN Progressed to Full time employment with Wigan Warriors

“Hi I am Rebecca Vaughan, I am 19 years old. My time at the college started when I enrolled on a Level 1 Sports & Fitness course then completed Level 2 and finally reached my Level 3 Personal Training course. I started the course as soon as I left school in 2012 finishing this year in the summer of 2014.

My experience as a student with the Warriors Sports College has been a really good one and improved each level I enrolled onto. The Level 3 Personal Trainer coursework, exams and evaluations were ideal as they suited me and my needs at the time. The tutors altered their teaching techniques each activity that we did to suit everyone’s needs, this made it easier to learn new topics. They also help you when you really needed it to make sure you kept going and not give up when it gets difficult. Every 6-8 weeks we sat down with our course tutor to do a ‘progress review’ to evaluate how we were doing at that point, also talking about your lifestyle and any personal issues if we had any. Our tutor was really supportive throughout the course, aiming to get the best out of us and he made sure that everything was ok so we were able to do the best we could to reach our potential.

After completing all components of my Level 3 Personal Trainer course, I had impressed that much that I was offered a full time job to work here with Wigan Warriors. I accepted the job and it’s been great to see everything on a day to day basis and to see the business grow, but this time as a member of staff and not a student! It is now great to see all new students on the course and wanting to achieve the same things as me, and hopefully get the same opportunities I was offered. I would definitely recommend the Warriors Sports College to anyone looking to study Health & Fitness”.

JOHN HORROBIN Progressed to Full time employment with Wigan Warriors

“Hi my name is John Horrobin. My studies at the Warriors Sports College started back in 2012 and I have just finished in July 2014. I started on the Level 1 Health & Fitness course and then worked my way through to complete the Level 2 Sports & Fitness course in just less than one year. Once I was qualified at Level 2 I was then accepted onto the Warriors Level 3 Personal Trainer Course.

With regards to the Level 3 Personal Trainer course, I found it really interesting as I was learning new and advanced topics. The tutors were really helpful as they provided lots of help and guidance throughout the course. The course entailed coursework, exams and practical based assessments, this was good as it challenged us each time due to the varied learning techniques. I found Level 3 to be challenging as all topics are covered in more detail and a big step up from level 2. The Warriors fitness club based on our college campus was a big bonus for us as this is where we studied the practical units each day, also were we carried out our work experience throughout the duration of the course. Working alongside qualified gym staff for the year and helping gym members with their training programmes helped me improve and gain real good knowledge and experience.

Once the course finished I was offered a full time job to work in the Warriors Fitness Club, I accepted the role and have been working as a fitness instructor & personal trainer for 3 months, so far it’s been good and I’m happy to represent Wigan Warriors whilst I learn my trade. A big thanks to the Warriors Education Team for helping me achieve each one of my qualifications and helping me to finally achieve my Personal Trainer career goal!”

LEVEL 3 - SPORTS PERFORMACE CASE STUDIES PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY

HANNAH RICHARDSON

Hi I am Hannah Richardson, I am 19 years old and I spent 2 academic years at the Warriors Education Academy studying the BTEC Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science.

The course itself was challenging yet none of the work was too difficult to do, all the work was coursework based which is what best suited me as I struggle with exams. There are different topics within the BTEC course that makes it really interesting and the sports facilities at the academy that we got to use made each day really good. My tutors always had time for everyone in my class and would guide us through each assignment; they would sit down and explain how we could improve our work in order for us to achieve the higher grades.

Applying for university is very frustrating going through UCAS applications and waiting for offers to be sent back, my tutors helped me so much by giving me a brilliant reference to match my predicted grades, this helped me achieve all conditional offers at my 5 chosen universities. I’m currently at Edge Hill University studying Physical Education and School Sport, the course is brilliant and I’m really enjoying it as we are currently going over everything I learnt at college. I get on with people really well in my seminars and I am making friends outside my seminar group as well. After completing my degree and hopefully getting a 1st I hope to study for my PGCE and become a physical education teacher, maybe primary or secondary school.

From college I made a lot of new friends a few of which I became really close to and still am now, I miss college and how much fun I use to have with my classmates and tutors, we were always smiling and I enjoyed going in every day.

BRAD LAWRENCE

“Hi my name is Brad Lawrence and I studied for the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Performance & Excellence with Wigan Warriors.

My experiences while at the college were very good; the course tutors were great. Our main course tutor Jeff Balmer was always willing to go out of his way to help me and the other students. The Level 3 Diploma is made up of many different units, I completed the ’19 Unit Extended Diploma’ over 2 years, each unit different and interesting. We were always given sufficient time and information on the unit tasks, I felt confident that I could complete each unit knowing that Jeff was supporting us. As this was a Level 3 course I was aware that I had to knuckle down, be serious and get the right final grades to be accepted for a place at university. There was also a chilled out, friendly atmosphere in the class room and across the whole college, this made it a happy place to be, where you could also enjoy your time there whilst studying.

Another thing that was very important to me was that the Warriors College were very flexible towards my commitment to the Warriors U19’s Academy Team. Whenever I needed time out, the education team were always willing to schedule my catch up lessons around training and games to help me meet both commitments. Many of the other U19’s players who study at the Warriors College also find this a benefit and a real help.

I am currently studying a Full Time Degree in Physical Education and School Sport at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk. I have been there for around three weeks now and am enjoying my time. I’d like to thank everyone at the Warriors Sports College for helping me achieve my goal of progressing to university and I hope that more young players like me coming through the system, study at the college and progress further on their chosen career path.”
