HIV Prevention Through Sport Following the April 2007 Oceania Workshop hosted in Port Moresby, a Committee on HIV Prevention Through Sport was formed, led by the PNG Sports Federation & Olympic Committee and with PNG Sports Foundation, National AIDS Council, Tingim Laip, Igat Hope and UNAIDS as 5 members. Essentially the Committee connects the sports community with the HIV community to coordinate activities to address HIV through sport. The slogan of the Committee is: “Be a Leader: Promote Sport – Prevent HIV”. With funding support from the National Aids Council and Sports For Development Initiative (SFDI)the Committee has successfully achieved the following: • Employment of a full-time Coordinator to coordinate its operations. • Creation of a National Declaration for PNG signed by 15 other key stakeholders as partners to implement recommendations of the Oceania Regional workshop. • The formulation of the HIV “SportsPlace” Policy for adoption by the sports community. A policy has been adopted by a number of national sports organizations. Special events supported by the Committee included: 8.1 Cathy Freeman “Inclusive Sports Event” at the Australian High Commission to coincide with the visit of Cathy Freeman as guest speaker at the SP Sports Awards. The invited guests to the event were four groups: • Elite Sportsmen and Sportswomen including Olympians; • People with a Disability • Women’s groups (Haus Ruth and Morata Crisis Centre) • People living with HIV, and HIV organisation representatives • Leadership PNG Each group had an informal discussion time with Cathy Freeman, and also participated in inclusive “sport ability” fun games facilitated by PNG Sports Foundation, mixing the groups and abilities and generating fun. T- shirts with the slogan “Don’t look down on anybody…unless you are helping them up!” were distributed after each discussion, thereby gradually spreading the inclusiveness message visually so that by the end of the event everyone was mingling and dressed the same. 8.2 Elite Athletes Breakfast The PNG Athletes Commission organised a fun morning for all elite athletes, to interact and network as well as play inclusive “sport ability” games that disseminated messages about HIV. This helped pilot the use of the “Kicking AIDS Out” sport-based games approach to HIV awareness and education. 8.3 Sport & Environment “Clean-a-thon” 6 The PNGSFOC held its inaugural ‘Sports Clean-a-thon’ on 19 th July funded under the Olympic Solidarity Sport & Environment Program and HIV Prevention Through Sport Program. It was held a day before the Trukai Olympic Day Fun Run to clean along the route of the run. Approximately 90 participants took part from National Federations; Athletes Commission and HIV Committee. All participants were issued a t-shirt with the HIV red ribbon and the slogan “Respect: For My Body; For My Community; For My Environment”.

  • MAE KOIME -‐ Athletics Profile Following the World Athletics Day in 2
MAE KOIME - Athletics Profile Following the World Athletics Day in 2001, Mae Koime was selected as part of a small international group of young athletes to attend the World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton, Canada. They were to be the guests of the I.A.A.F. She had a VIP pass to watch the very best athletes in the world compete against each other and record fantastic performances. From then on Mae’s heart was set on doing the best that she could in the sport to represent and actually compete at these big global meetings. She had already tasted international travel the year before when she competed in the Oceania Championships in Adelaide, just before the Sydney Olympic Games, but her appetite for greater things was now beginning to emerge. Over the next decade Mae had the chance to compete in some of the great stadiums in the world. In 2002 she had the opportunity to travel to the “Home of Sprinting” – Kingston Jamaica – to compete in the World Junior Championships, where she qualified for the semi-final of the 100m event. The following year it was to Paris for the World Championships, and then in 2004 to the birthplace of the Ancient and Modern Olympic Games - Athens, Greece where Mae competed in the 100m event. 2005 saw her participate in the World Championships in Helsinki Finland, and in 2006 it was closer to home with the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground. In Melbourne she progressed to the 2nd round of the 100m and joined the other PNG sprinters to finish fifth in the 4 x 400m Relay.

End Violence Your thoughts... Against Children! With Esther Bralyn Wani Free Monthly English edition - Issue 17 August 2015 LOs in dark after 100th LNG export PNG LNG landowners are still anxiously waiting for their share of benefit from the sale of the liq- uefied natural gas. After the 100th LNG cargo export, landowners are being kept in sus- pense while the K43 billion gas commercialisation project’s co-ven- ture equity partners have already benefitted from the sale of LNG. ExxonMobil said in a statement dated June 15 that the project had so far exported the 100th cargo of liquefied natural gas, just over one year on from the start of export op- erations. The LNG carrier Methane Spirit had transported the cargo bound for Japan for Tokyo Electric Power Company Inc. (Tepco). Tepco is the same customer who received the maiden LNG cargo on-board the Spirit of Hela in May 2014.
