Cobitis ohridana and Barbatula zetensis in the River Moraèa basin, Montenegro: distribution, habitat, population structure and conservation needs. Folia biol. (Kraków) 51(Suppl.): 147-153. In this paper, we report on the distribution, habitat, population structure and conservation needs of Cobitis ohridana and Barbatula zetensis in the basin of the River Moraèa in Montenegro. Our data show both species to be mainly distributed in the lower stretch of the main river and some tributaries in lowland habitats. Cobitis ohridana preferred more shallow water with a higher abundance of filamentous algae, while Barbatula zetensis was more numerous in slightly deeper water with more stones as a bottom substrate. Slight differences in the habitat preference were also observed between juveniles and adults in both species. Although both species are abundant in suited habitat, they have a small distribution area in the Moraèa basin due to the natural rarity of the habitat. According to our data, they are not endangered. 1 Ostropol – a brief Jewish history Neville Lamdan © 1793 Map showing Ostropol and Stara Konstantinov The town of Ostropol, in the region of Volhynia, is said to have been founded in 1576 by a Ruthenian (Ukrainian) prince, Constantine Basil Ostrog (1526 1608).i However, the name of the place, sounding like “Austro-pol(is)” [Austro-city], may suggest that it was established earlier by “Austrians”, coming from nearby Galicia (“ear-marked” in green on the map) or further to the west. Be that as it may, Prince Constantine Ostrog was one of the most powerful men of his day in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the height of his career, he served as the (military) Marshal of Volhynia and Voivode (civil governor) of the important Kiev Voivodship. He owned vast lands throughout the area, allegedly comprising some 100 towns and 1,300 villages.2 In the 1560’s, he built an impressive castle, around which the town of Stara Konstantinov, bearing his name, grew. He certainly had it in his power to develop Ostropol, on the Sluch River, a decade later. Prince Constantine Basil Ostrog - putative founder of Ostropol In view of its strategic location, Ostropol was frequently the target of marauding Tatar and Cossak bands, requiring it to develop its own defensives. By 1619, the town was fortified and 23 villages lay in its domain. In 1648, it found itself in the midst of the upheavals instigated by Cossacks, ostensibly trying to wrest their independence from the Poles. In June 1849, a Polish general succeeded in driving sizeable Cossack bands out of the towns of Kryvonosenka, Krasilov and Stara Konstantinov and bottling them up in the castle at Ostropol, where they put up fierce resistance. -

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a slowly progressing neurodegenerative disease with accumulation of alpha-synuclein and the formation of Lewy bodies inside nerve cells. The prevalence of PD ranges from 100 to 200 cases per 100,000 population. However, in the Ukrainian reality, many cases of the disease remain undiagnosed, which affects the statistical indicators of incidence and prevalence. The purpose of the study is to compare PD epidemiological indices in the Southern Ukraine with all-Ukrainian rates. Material and methods. Statistical data of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, public health departments of Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions for 2015–2017 were analyzed. There were used the methods of descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. Results. Average prevalence of PD in Ukraine is 67.5 per 100,000 population — it is close to the Eastern European rate. The highest prevalence was registered in Lviv (142.5 per 100,000), Vinnytsia (135.9 per 100,000), Cherkasy (108.6 per 100,000) and Kyiv (107.1 per 100,000) regions. The lowest rates were in Luhansk (37.9 per 100,000), Kyrovohrad (42.5 per 100,000), Chernivtsi (49.0 per 100,000) and Ternopil (49.6 per 100,000) regions. In the Southern Ukraine, the highest prevalence of PD was found in Mykolaiv region. -

Rivers in the Japanese archipelago, separated from the continent of Asia by about 17 Ma, have experienced an intermittent exchange of freshwater fish taxa through a narrow land bridge generated by lowered sea level. As the Korean Peninsula and Japanese archipelago were not covered by an ice sheet during glacial periods, phylogeographical analyses in this region can trace the history of biota that were, for a long time, beyond the last glacial maximum. In this study, we analyzed the phylogeography of four freshwater fish taxa, Hemibarbus longirostris, dark chub Nipponocypris temminckii, Tanakia ssp. and Carassius ssp., whose distributions include both the Korean Peninsula and Western Japan. Whereas Polesie is one of the regions with a rich natural and cultural heritage. It is undoubtedly important to preserve this heritage in the most natural state and at the same time use its potential for the purposes of sustainable development of the region, where about 2 million people live, as well as for the growth of the economy of the entire country. In this study, we focus on economic aspects in order to assess the current state of tourism in rural areas, as well as tourism based on the sustainable use of natural potential (ecotourism). Among our tasks is a primary assessment of the efficiency and prospects of investments in this sector, determination of its potential for achieving the goals of socio- economic development.
