The Bordeaux Classifications

Bordeaux first introduced the concept of wine classification in 1855 under Napoleon III for the Universal Exposition in Paris, and it now serves as an expression of quality and prestige worldwide. The concept and value of the crus classés (“classified growths”) exemplifies the blending of a ’s distinctive characteristics and dedicated human intervention over many generations to ensure excellence.

There are several classifications in Bordeaux, including (in order of seniority);

1855 Classification of the Médoc

The Classification

The Saint-Emilion Classification

The Cru Bourgeois de Médoc Classification

It should be highlighted that a wine or appellation can still be amazing even if it is not officially classified – as in the example of Pomerol.
