Faulconbridge NSW 2776 1 2 Foreword Of all the ships that have flown the ensign of the Royal Australian Navy, there has never been one quite like the first HMAS Perth, a cruiser of the Second World War. In her short life of just less than three years as an Australian warship she sailed all the world’s great oceans, from the icy wastes of the North Atlantic to the steamy heat of the Indian Ocean and the far blue horizons of the Pacific. She survived a hurricane in the Caribbean and months of Italian and German bombing in the Mediterranean. One bomb hit her and nearly sank her. She fought the Italians at the Battle of Matapan in March, 1941, which was the last great fleet action of the British Royal Navy, and she was present in June that year off Syria when the three Australian services - Army, RAN and RAAF - fought together for the first time. Eventually, she was sunk in a heroic battle against an overwhelming Japanese force in the Java Sea off Indonesia in 1942. Fast and powerful and modern for her times, Perth was a light cruiser of some 7,000 tonnes, with a main armament of eight 6- inch guns, and a top speed of about 34 knots. She had a crew of about 650 men, give or take, most of them young men in their twenties. -

The chamber works and Cello Concerto that soon followed the war have an air of introspection and wistful longing for a world that had gone forever, shattered by the brutality of four years of conflict. But the changes that the war was to bring were not apparent from the outset. The war was not expected to last for more than six months and began in an atmosphere of patriotic fervour intent on settling old scores. And since this was a world war, the mood of patriotism extended to embrace other countries suffering at the hands of the Germans. The mood unsettled Elgar. He counted a number of Germans among his close friends and, after all, it was the Germans who had rescued The Dream of Gerontius from potential early oblivion following its disastrous premiere in Birmingham. But Elgar nevertheless responded to the needs of the hour by writing within the first year of the war two pieces whose proceeds went to support war charities in countries overrun by the Germans. -

The Elgar Society JOURNAL JULY 1999 Vol.11 No.2 ELGAR’S TE DEUM & BENEDICTUS John Winter [Dr Winter is Senior Lecturer at Trinity College of Music, London. He is a general freelance musician, and holds a PhD from the University of East Anglia on contemporary church music.] There is arguably no better way to understand a piece of music than to rehearse it thoroughly before performing it. When this rehearsal involves work with an amateur choir the learning process is even greater. This has recently been my experience with Elgar’s Te Deum and Benedictus, and Give unto the Lord, working with a non-auditioned, all-ability choir, teaching virtually every note and explaining every subtlety of rubato. My appreciation of these works’ structure is all the greater for this preparation. Elgar’s liturgical music rarely gets a good press. There is barely a reference, and that a derogatory one, in New Grove. At best it gets mentioned in passing; at worst it is derided under the label of Victorian triumphalism. Worst of all, apart from Ave verum corpus, it is rarely performed. The Te Deum and Benedictus in F, Op 34, dates from 1897, and thus comes not only at the climax of Elgar’s ‘formative’ period, but also at the height of his ‘imperialist’ style. Op 32 was the Imperial March, his first major commission for a London audience, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Op 33 was The Banner of St George, and Op 35, Caractacus. John Allison’s book, Edward Elgar : Sacred Music,1 is exceptional in giving due consideration to the lesser-known works and incomplete fragments, along with valuable background to this particular work. -

INC. 1922 z f\5as oz^l — PREFACE To the fact that in the course of many years I gathered tog-ether what became known as the most comprehensive collection of the writings of Rudyard Kipling, and to the fact that no-one has compiled an exhaustive bibliography of these writings is due this work. How great has been the need for a full and up to date bibliography of Kipling's works needs no telling. From Lahore to London and from London to New York his various publishers have woven a bibliographical maze such as surely can hardly be paralleled in the literature about literature. The present attempt—the first which has been made in England, so far as I know, on any extensive scale—to form a detailed guide to this bibliographical maze is necessarily tentative; and despite all errors and omissions, for which, as a mere tyro, I crave indulgence, I trust that the following pages will provide not only a handy record for collectors of the writings of our great imperialist poet and novelist, but a basis for the fuller and more perfect work, which the future will bring forth.
