It is especially worth noting that the decision about the canonization and its date was announced public- ly precisely on the day of our university’s pilgrimage to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. It was during a consistory on September 30th 2013 that Pope Francis announced that he would canonize two popes, John XXIII and John Paul II, on April 27th 2014, Divine Mercy Sunday. It immediately became apparent that this would be a unique event that would forever remain etched in our memories. Along with the inauguration of the new academic year, preparations for the fullest experience of the canonization of John Paul II – the founder, caring guardian and ultimately illustrious patron of the university – were undertaken. These were not only preparations related to the organization of travel to the canonization ceremony, but above all those whose purpose was to deepen the knowledge of the great Polish pope and the popular- ization of his teachings. Tadeusza Rydzyka znacznie przekra- cza ramy właściwe mediom katolickim. Przedsięwzięcia medialne wspierane są przez znaczną grupę osób, które nie wykształciły jeszcze struktur partyjnych, ale stanowią sprawnie działający ruch społeczny. Słuchacze radia nie są już tylko zatomizowanym audytorium właściwym innym współczesnym środkom komuniko- wania masowego, ale zintegrowaną grupą społeczną. Socjologiczne sondaże wykazują, że w obrębie wpływów koncernu znajduje się ok. 1 mln osób. Są to zazwyczaj niezbyt do- brze wykształceni ludzie, którzy mają niewielkie dochody i czują się zagubieni w demokratyczno–wolnorynkowej rzeczywistości. Obecność w polskim eterze Radia Maryja dodaje im otuchy, a za- razem stwarza poczucie więzi grupowej. Publicystyczne treści upowszechniane przez koncern dalekie są od politycznej poprawności. Ulokować je można w kręgu po- glądów konserwatywnych, nacjonalistycznych, a niekiedy nawet ksenofobicznych. Wypływają one zapewne ze społecznego zapo- trzebowania, a zarazem obrazują sposób myślenia i postrzegania świata przez niemałą grupę Polaków.     J.Czaja, Polish Church and European Integration Jan Czaja∗ Polish Church and European Integration The 1989 events: the collapse of communism and the reconstruction of the democratic system, had initiated the process of redefining the place and role of the Church in Poland. The Catholic Church was faced with internal challenges stemming from system transformation within the country, as well as with external challenges resulting from a shift in Polish foreign policy priorities. Democracy restoration and civic society renaissance were accompanied by a process of the Church eschewing substitute functions it had carried during the communism era, acting de facto as political opposition. This process, albeit natural under new conditions, encountered ambivalent reception in certain church and social circles, and was interpreted as a limitation to the role of the Church. In parallel, the process of criticism and anti-clerical populism grew, boosted in particular by leftist parties, opposing excessive Church presence in public life.1 Westward re-orientation of Polish foreign policy, and the clear definition in the priorities thereof as a firmly declared will of accessing NATO and the European Union alike, caused – especially given the perspective of integration with European structures – considerable confusion in wide social circles, also among representatives of the church hierarchy and clergy. This phenomenon was on the one hand accompanied with great hopes of Poland making up for her civilisation hiatus, of diminishing the gap in economic development, and of ensuring growth of the country; on the other, concerns have been and continue to be expressed as to the Polish economy being too weak to face international competition.

    Catholicism and the Jews in Post-Communist Poland Joanna Michlic richard stockton college of new jersey Antony Polonsky brandeis university Roman Catholicism has long been a central element of Polish national identity. This phenomenon is deeply rooted in the Polish historical experience and is closely linked with the country’s collective identity. As a result, in Polish Catholicism, national ideals have become intertwined with Christian values and national identity has often taken precedence over universal principles. This has led to the widespread identification of Polishness with Catholicism, as summed up in the phrase Polak katolik. The dominant model of religiosity has been conservative, traditional, and “folkish,” with relatively little stress on the spiritual and intellectual development of faith.1 In the eyes of its leaders, Polish Catholicism was the most effective bulwark of Polishness against both the 19th-century partitioning powers and the 20th-century totalitarian forces of Nazism and Soviet Communism. Political groups such as the National Democrats (Endecja), the principal expo- nents in Poland of ethno-nationalism and antisemitism, attempted from the end of the 19th century to exploit the identification of Polishness with Catholicism. How- ever, in interwar Poland, political Catholicism was unable to attain a hegemonic position in political life. Especially after the seizure of power in May 1926 by the charismatic military hero Jo´zef Piłsudski, political forces advancing a Catholic agenda, whether of a Christian Democratic or of a National Democratic character, were marginalized. The relations between the Church and the authorities were correct but hardly cordial, and a significant portion of the Episcopate, or Church hierarchy—though not the primate, Cardinal August Hlond (appointed in June 1926)—retained its sympathy for the National Democrats.
