Gorry, Dublin, until Anonymous sale, Christie’s, London, 6 October, 1950, lot 123 Anonymous sale, Christie’s, London, 9 July 2014, lot 159 (The Property of a Lady) Private collection, England, until 2021 Born in Antwerp in 1603, Simon de Vos studied with the portraitist Cornelis de Vos (1603- 1676) before enrolling as a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1620. Subsequently, he is thought to have rounded off his education with a trip to Italy. Although undocumented, a sojourn in Italy during the 1620s is the only plausible explanation for the stylistic similarities that exist between some of his early genre scenes and those of the German-born artist Johann Liss (c. 1595-1631), who was in Rome and Venice at that time. In any event, de Vos was back in his hometown by 1627, the year in which he married Catharina, sister of the still-life painter Adriaen van Utrecht (1599-1652). He remained in Antwerp for the rest of his life. In his early career, Simon de Vos painted mostly cabinet-sized genre scenes. He specialised in merry company subjects, whose style and composition recall similar works by such Dutch contemporaries as Antonie Palamedesz. (1601-1673), Dirck Hals (1591-1656) and Pieter Codde (1599-1678). After about 1640, he turned increasingly to biblical subjects that show the influence of Frans Francken the Younger (1581-1642), Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). -

The Netherlands initially did better in the IOC membership competition, too. Baron Fritz van Tuijll van Serooskerken was the first IOC representative from the Low Countries, though he was not a member right from the start; this Dutch nobleman joined the International Olympic Committee in 1898, two years after its formation, to become the first Dutch IOC member. Baron Van Tuijll is still a great name in Dutch sporting history; in 1912 he founded a Dutch branch of the Olympic Movement and became its first president. However, it was not long before Belgium caught up. There were no Belgians among the 13 men – even today, women members are still few and far between – who made up the first International Olympic Committee in 1894, but thanks to the efforts of Count Henri de Baillet-Latour, who joined the IOC in 1903, the Olympic Movement became the key international point of reference for sport in the Catholic south. The Belgian Olympic Committee was formed three years later – a year af- ter Belgium, thanks to the efforts of King Leopold II, had played host to the prestigious Olympic Congress. -

This is the ninth international quadrennial conference of HNA and the first on the campus of Ghent University. HNA will move to a triennial format with our next conference in 2021. HNA is extremely grateful to Ghent University, Groeningemuseum Bruges, St. John’s Hospital Bruges, and Het Grootseminarie Bruges for placing lecture halls at our disposal and for hosting workshops. HSL ZUID, AMSTERDAM-ROTTERDAM(-ANTWERP), THE NETHERLANDS(-BELGIUM) OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION LOCATION: AMSTERDAM-ROTTERDAM -ANTWERP HSL Zuid is a high speed rail line, SCOPE: TRANSNATIONAL 125km long, stopping at three TRANSPORT MODE: RAIL stations: Amsterdam Zuid, PRINCIPAL CONSTRUCTION: GRADE Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and NEW LINK: YES Rotterdam, before continuing to the PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES Dutch/Belgian border to connect NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL LINK with services to Antwerp, Brussels ALTERNATIVE TO AIR TRAVEL and Paris. The Hague and Breda are ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT linked to the high speed network by PRINCIPAL STAKEHOLDERS shuttle trains. CONSTRUCTION START DATE: 03/2000 OPERATION START DATE: 09/2009 BACKGROUND MONTHS IN PLANNING: 153 MONTHS IN CONSTRUCTION: 114 PROJECT COMPLETED: The principal objectives of the project were to connect Rotterdam, 48 MONTHS BEHIND SCHEDULE Schiphol and Amsterdam to the European High Speed Network, to COSTS (IN 2010 USD) encourage economic development, and to provide an alternative to air travel to European destinations. It was anticipated in the PREDICTED COST: 6.87BN government’s 1979 structure scheme and a 1986 feasibility study, ACTUAL COST: 9.79BN PROJECT COMPLETED: although the formal planning process started only in 1987. 42% OVER BUDGET FUNDING: 86% PUBLIC : 14% PRIVATE The initial proposal was withdrawn as it was felt to be weak, but the revised version already included environmental impact assessments and public consultation from the first. -
