It is also Tanzania’s most sizeable elephant haven and home to a profusion of bird species, including kingfishers, plovers, egrets, hornbills and sunbirds. Crocodiles and hippos thrive in the Great Ruaha River, which flows along the sanctuary’s eastern border and in the dry season between July and November, animals flock to the last remaining water sources, presenting an exceptional wildlife spectacle. Page | 4 Day Itinerary Today you will fly to Ruaha National Park, where you will spend the next 5 nights exploring Tanzania's largest national park. Ruaha is known for its large number of lions, having 10% Africa's entire lion population living here, as well as for its walking safaris. Activities Fly to Ruaha Game drives and walking safaris Overnight: Kichaka Expeditions Frontier Camp (2 nights) and Fly Camp (3 Nights) Whilst the primary focus of the expeditions is the ‘bush’ itself, the experience is well backed up by our mobile and highly functional camp. Some of the worlds harshest and most rugged terrain can be conquered with ease as long as there is a base nearby providing for all the basic human needs such as comfortable beds, good food and hot showers. The Kichaka camp itself is always situated in a grove of trees to provide shade in the heat of the day enabling that all important ‘power nap’ after lunch. The camp has three mobile tents which can hold two people comfortably in each. The tents themselves are supported by metal frames and are large with plenty of standing space, protected by flysheets in case of rain which also keep the tent nice and cool. The beds have comfortable mattresses and can be arranged either as two twin beds or a double bed. There is a spacious covered verandah in the front with excellent views, ideal to sit and relax in the afternoon with a pair of binoculars quietly watching the animals and birds that may venture into camp. Each tent has its own outdoor ablution structure nearby, also with great views and comprises of a wash basin, hot bucket shower (which can be arranged at any time) and a short drop toilet, much more hygienic than the long drop system and is replaced and cleaned frequently throughout the day. The large and spacious ‘mess’ area is covered, well shaded and is the heart of the camp. There is a large dining table, as well as comfortable chairs, sofas and beanbags scattered around. The mess area provides a nice peaceful environment to relax, read a book or chat the evening away with a roaring campfire nearby. At an unbelievable 55,000 sq km it is almost twice the size of Belgium and four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the North. The landscape here has remained almost as it was before tourism began and the massive park has only a few accommodation options. The Great Rufiji River and its tributaries are the lifeblood of the reserve, creating a network of forests and woodlands around the lagoons, sandbanks and lakes with tall palm trees adding to the scenic splendour. Because of its size and remoteness, the reserve has over 2,100 species of plants, 350 species of birds, 60,000 elephant, 108,000 buffalos and an estimated 1,300 of the worlds’ roughly 4,000 remaining rare wild dogs, giving guests an opportunity to glimpse all of these exotic animals in true unspoilt wilderness.
