Three area business and community leaders joined the Board: John A. AffleckAffleck,,,, vice president of Stratton Monthly Dividend REIT Shares and Stratton Small-Cap Value Fund, of Wyndmoor, PA; David GirardGirard----diCarlodiCarlodiCarlo,,,, 2008-09 U.S. Ambassador to Austria, of Philadelphia, PA; and John Saler, chair of Government and Public Affairs Practice Group at Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young LLP, of Philadelphia, PA. Twenty directors were re-elected for three-year terms. They are Bernard E. Anderson of Wayne, PA; Martin Heckscher of Philadelphia, PA; Stacy Maria Dutton of Villanova, PA; Harry R. A complete listing of The Philadelphia Orchestra Association’s Board of Directors, Officers, and Executive Committee can be found on the Orchestra’s website and is printed in each concert program book for the Orchestra’s concerts at the Kimmel Center. – more – PAGE 2 The Philadelphia Orchestra Association announces new Board members Newly elected members of the Board of Directors • John AffleckAffleck,,,, of Wyndmoor, PA, began his business career in 1968 with the Trust Department of Provident National Bank (Philadelphia) where he served as an assistant vice president and investment portfolio manager. In 1979, Mr. Affleck joined Stratton Management Company where he was named president in 1997. In addition to being president of Stratton Multi-Cap Fund, formally Stratton Growth Fund, he serves as vice president of Stratton Monthly Dividend REIT Shares and Stratton Small-Cap Value Fund. Mr. Affleck received his B.A. in Pre-Law from Lafayette College and his M.B.A. from Temple University. He earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1976 and is currently a member of the Financial Analysts Society of Philadelphia and the Association for Investment Management & Research. Mr. Affleck serves on numerous civic boards and is currently an Overseer at William Penn Charter School and a Trustee of the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, Woodmere Art Museum, and Beaver College/Arcadia University. • David F. GirardGirard----diCarlodiCarlo is a shareholder and attorney in the Philadelphia-based international law firm Cozen O'Connor, where he provides strategic advice to clients in the banking, healthcare, education, transportation, and service industries, as well as to government entities. He has been consistently named in The Best Lawyers in America as a leading corporate lawyer and government relations specialist. Prior to joining Cozen O’Connor, Ambassador Girard-diCarlo served in 2008-09 as U.S. Ambassador to Austria, heading one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions in the world. Appointed by President George W. Bush, he oversaw more than 500 U.S. and Austrian employees and the operations of the U.S. mission to the United Nations in Vienna and the U.S. mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. He had previously served for 22 years as the managing partner and chairman of a large Philadelphia-based international professional services firm. Ambassador Girard-diCarlo is president of the Pennsylvania Society, a member of the Board of Trustees of Saint Joseph's University, a member of the Board of Consultors of Villanova University School of Law, one of five members of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission, a member of the Council of American Ambassadors, and a member of the Diplomatic Council on Energy Security in Washington, D.C. Ambassador Girard-diCarlo has served as a member of the Board of PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., and its predecessors, chairman of the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, a Board member of AMTRAK, chairman of the American Public Transit Association, and chairman of the Board of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). He has served in leadership positions at The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Academy of Music, the Walnut Street Theatre, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Arizona Heart Foundation, among others. He was co-chairman of the host committee for the 2000 Republican National Convention. Ambassador Girard-diCarlo has received an honorary degree from Drexel University, the Americanism Award from the Anti-Defamation League, the Gerald Abraham Award for Distinguished Service from Villanova University School of Law, the Pontifical Honor of Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great for his work as chairman of Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools, and the Judge Learned Hand Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee. • John R. He represents businesses in various industries, including telecommunications, financial services, utilities, pharmaceuticals, health care, insurance, real estate, construction, publishing, gaming, and information technology. He is a registered lobbyist in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. With a distinguished career as a campaign strategist, fundraiser, and political commentator, Mr. Saler has a wide array of credentials in the fields of politics, media, finance, and civic affairs. Recently ranked as one of the “Top 50 Influential Democrats in Pennsylvania” by Politics magazine–a monthly political publication, he was also recognized by Philadelphia magazine as one of its “People to Watch ’08” and is also listed in Who’s Who in American Politics . Mr. Saler recently served a four-year term on the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania Public Television Network (PPTN) Commission–the policy and decision-making board for PPTN. He was nominated by Governor Edward G. Rendell and unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate. In addition, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter nominated Mr. Saler to the Wawa Welcome America Board of Directors, which is charged with the planning and execution of Philadelphia’s week-long July 4th celebration. Mr. Saler has served on numerous boards, including the Philadelphia Airport Advisory Board Executive Committee, the Clean Air Council of the Delaware Valley Board of Directors, the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Coordinating Commission as a commissioner, and as a charter Board member of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). He was also a Board member of Project Rainbow, a transitional housing project for homeless women and children. In 1994 Mr. Saler was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, and his political involvement spans over two decades and includes associations with more than 20 campaigns. He has vigorously supported and has advised a diverse group of elected officials, including governors, senators, representatives, and mayors. He was also actively involved in the campaigns of two former U.S. presidents.
