Ever wonder what Dolphins have to do with Staten Island? In 1523, Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered the New York Bay where the Verazzano-Narrows Bridge now stands in his honor, joining Brooklyn and the other New York City boroughs with Staten Island. Verrazzano made that discovery aboard the vessel given to him by King Francis I of France, appropriately named “La Dauphine, or “The Dolphin.” Nearly four and a half centuries later, the name still plays a role on Staten Island today as the official mascot of CSI Athletics.
