  • 1999 Highlights
    from the 1999 Annual Report HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR The research and education programs at the Laboratory remain strong and vibrant. The recruitment of the first students in the Watson School of Biological Sciences and the com- pletion of their intensive core courses highlighted progress this year. The DNA Learning Center introduced new, Web-based educational tools, and the meetings and courses pro- grams at the main campus and the Banbury Center continued to provide a valuable service to the scientific community. Significantly, the Laboratory Press saw the continued develop- ment of its exciting textbook-publishing program as part of the Laboratory’s goal to promote innovative teaching programs for graduate students and senior undergraduate students. These educational programs occur in the surrounding of a strong research environment, with research and education braided together in a common enterprise. Research Neuroscience Roberto Malinow and Karel Svoboda have continued to push the limits of brain imaging by observing the changes that occur in individual neurons as they respond to electrical stimuli. Combining their expertise in electrophysi- ology and high-resolution imaging of the brain, they study the cellular events that underlie “synaptic plasticity”—the ability of brain neurons to reorganize their connections in response to experience, such as during learning and consolidation of memories. In particular, Roberto and Karel are exploring the mechanisms involved in long-term potentiation (LTP), the strengthening of Roberto Malinow synaptic connections between nerve cells in response to trained stimuli. Their studies focus on a region of the brain involved in learning and memory called the hip- pocampus, a region required for a form of memory called declarative memory, or the con- scious memory of learned events.

    Highlights of the Year Research More than 600 scientists working in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s 50-plus laboratory groups contributed to research that in 2017 was published in the world’s major research journals. Th eir eff orts refl ect the full spectrum of CSHL’s scientifi c activity in Cancer, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, Quantitative Biology, and Genomics. It is impossible in a small space to adequately represent the scope of this work. Th e following is a sampling of important fi ndings. Neuronal Types Are Defi ned by Genes that Shape Their Communication Patterns Scientists led by Josh Huang have published an important discovery about the molecular- genetic basis of neuronal cell types. Neurons are the basic building blocks that wire up brain circuits supporting mental activities and behavior. Th e study, which involves sophisticated computational analysis of the messages transcribed from genes that are ac- tive in a neuron, points to patterns of cell-to-cell communication as the core feature that makes possible rigorous distinctions among neuron types across the mouse brain. Th e team likens their discovery to the way communication styles and patterns enable people to learn important, defi nitive things about others; to a signifi cant degree, we are de- fi ned by the circle of people with whom we communicate. Using six genetically identifi able types of cortical inhibitory neurons that all release the neurotransmitter GABA, the team J. Huang sought to discover factors capable of distinguishing the core molecular features of the neu- rons. Using a high-resolution RNA-sequencing method to identify genes that are expressed in indi- vidual neurons, coupled with computational analysis tools developed by Jesse Gillis’ group, the team searched for families of genes whose activity exhibited characteristic patterns in each neuron type.

Annual Report 1983 LUMMINI 11111M1111 111111MIN, atalla COLD SPRING HARBOR LABORATORY Annual Report 1983 GOVERNANCE AND MAJOR AFFILIATIONS The Laboratory is governed by a 25-member Board of Trustees which meets three or four times a year. Authority to act for the Board of Trustees between meetings is vested in the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. The Executive Committee is composed of the Officers of the Board plus any other members who may be elected to the Executive Committee by the Board of Trustees. Additional standing and ad hoc committees are appointed by the Board of Trustees to provide guidance and advice in specific areas of the Laboratory's operations. Representation on the Board of Trustees itself is divided between community representatives and sci- entists from major research institutions. Ten such institutions are presently represented on the Board of Trustees: Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Columbia University, Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York University, The Rockefel- ler University, The State University of New York at Stony Brook, University of Wisconsin, and Yale University.
