Realiza-se a cada 2 anos, e este ano de 2017, a decorrer no Gabão entre 14 de Janeiro e 5 de Fevereiro de 2017, será a edição número 31 da CAN. Desde 1996 que a CAN se disputa com 16 equipas, numa primeira fase divididas em 4 grupos de 3 jornadas onde se apuram os 2 primeiros de cada grupo, seguido dos quartos-de-final, meias-finais, 3º/4º lugar e final – totalizando 32 partidas. A CAN 2017 vai contar com presença de 16 seleções nacionais, tendo 1 lugar reservado para o país organizador, o Gabão em 2017, e os restantes 15 lugares apurados num play-off de qualificação para a CAN. A competição de qualificação para a CAN 2017 contou com 51 seleções participantes, a disputar as 15 vagas da fase final, tendo-se dividido em 13 grupos. Foram apurados os 13 vecedores de cada grupo mais os 2 melhores segundos lugares (Uganda e Togo) entre todos os grupos. O maior campeão é o Egito que já conta com 7 títulos conquistados, em segundo lugar o Gana e os Camarões com 4 títulos de campeão, seguido pela Nigéria com 3 títulos.
