Radio 680 KFEQ is the radio home to Griffon Athletics. For the 21st straight year, the voice of the Griffons, Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Orf, will travel the country to deliver the sights and sounds of the exciting action. With a 5,000-watt signal, KFEQ can be heard in several states throughout the Midwest. Orf also hosts the Griffon Coaches Show every Friday morning at 9:30 AM on KFEQ.

Dave Riggert of ESPN 1550 Radio in St. Joseph will also cover Griffon Athletics throughout the season and participate in Griffon broadcasts . Griffon coaches and student-athletes will appear weekly on his daily show throughout the season.

Television ABC affiliate KQTV is the official television home of the Griffons. During the softball season, the Griffons “A NEW BEGINING” always receive priority attention. Griffon Sports Insider The official television show of Griffon Athletics, “Griffon Sports Insider” was launched in fall of 2010. The weekly half hour show features interviews with in season Griffon coaches and student-athletes and game highlights. The show also includes weekly features, a calendar of events and the world famous pick segment. Academic Advisement Each Western student has their own academic advisor within their department of study. Your advisor will put you in the best position to graduate, as well as line up valuable applied learning and research opportunities. In addition, the Western Athletics Department has its own compliance and academic coordinator who serves as a direct liaison between the student-athlete and academic faculty to ensure each athlete has the resources they need to succeed.

Center for Academic Support The Center for Academic Support provides one-on-one and small group tutoring for most courses on campus. Located on the northeast corner of the Hearnes Center, the center consists of group study spaces and a large open area for students to receive tutoring or work independently. The center also offers free tutoring in math, writing, specific courses, reading and study skills. In addition to these services, students have access to online assistance, Supplemental Instruction (SI), and workshops sponsored by the center.

Athletics Mentor Program Student-athletes that need additional academic support participate in the athletics mentoring program. The program, which is facilitated through the Center for Academic Support,

Western Facts and Figures * According to a recent economic impact report conducted by Western, the university had a financial impact of $183.5 million on the region last year. Western’s economic impact increased $22.6 million since the last study in 2005. * Missouri residents comprise 92% of the university’s students, and about 4,200 of the total enrollment are from the 10-county region. * With approximately 535 employees, Western is St. Joseph’s 11th largest employer. * Western offers opportunities for applied learning not always found in other colleges and universities. The Reminton Nature Center is located in the beautiful Missouri River Valley in picturesque St. Joseph, Missouri, they have built a reputation for sharing nature’s wonder with students and families, children and adults. St. Joseph’s climate is warm during the summer when temperatures tend to be in the 80s and coldest during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 30s.

The annual average precipitation in St. Joseph is 35.24 Inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month of the year is May with an average rainfall of 4.95 Inches.

Facilities Facilities play an important role in helping today’s student-athletes enjoy their collegiate experience and in developing their potential to its fullest. Coupled with the exceptional fan support the program receives from the community of St. Joseph, the game atmosphere at Missouri Western is as exciting as anywhere in the country. Improvements that were completed in the fall of 2010 include a new state-of-the-art weight room and training room facility designed and built to also accommodate the who held their preseason training camp at Missouri Western beginning the summer of 2010. The Griffons also have a new field on campus to call their own which will be done by the fall of 2010.

MWSU, SUMMER HOME OF THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS On July 30, 2010, months of planning paid off as the Kansas City Chiefs opened year one of a five-year agreement to hold training camp on the Missouri Western State University campus. Thousands of Chiefs fans from all over the country converged on St. Joseph during the three weeks. The camp not only provided a great place for the Chiefs to train in front of their fans, but valuable and unlimited exposure for MWSU, the facilities and the City of St. Joseph. The Chiefs trained on the bermuda grass practice fields as much as possible, only practicing inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex in the event of severe weather. “We believe that the return of the training camp to the state of Missouri will have a positive impact on everybody involved,” said Chiefs Chairman of the Board Clark Hunt. “Our football team is very excited to be so close to home preparing for the season and in what are truly state-of-the-art facilities.” Top Left: The Chiefs special teams get their work in on one of the new bermuda grass practice fields. wELCOME TO THE gRIFFON iNDOOR SPORTS COMpLEX On July 21, 2010, the dreams of past, present and future Griffons nationwide came true as the newly named Griffon Indoor Sports Complex was completed and officially opened with a dedication ceremony. The facility serves as the new home for Griffon Football and the summer training camp home for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Facility features a full 100-yard field turf indoor field, a state-of-the-art locker room which can accommodate up to 120 players, coaches offices, weight training room, meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art theatre, equipment room and athletic training room. The facilities available to Griffon student-athletes rival those of any collegiate or professional sports organization. “A NEW BEGINING”

The field also includes markings for soccer and netting hanging from the ceiling to allow the Griffon softball, baseball and golf teams to conduct practices and for other Grifon teams to condition. Missouri Western State Uni- versity’s Department of Athlet- ics and Heartland Regional Medical Center of St. Joseph, Mo. have extended their partnership for the nation- ally known medical group to remain the “Official Medical Provider of Myron Unzicker Kate Esely Dr. Tom Alderson Becky Johnson Western Athletics.”

In the agreement which now enters its sixth year, Heartland Regional Medical Center will provide medi- cal/support services to Missouri Western Athletics teams. Dr. Alderson has served as a team physician at Missouri Western for six years and has a rich history of service to both the University and the St. Joseph community.

Gary Hazelrigg continues to be the Sports Medicine Coordinator for Heartland Regional Medical Center and coordinates services to Western. Hazelrigg has previous ties to West- ern Athletics, serving as an assistant professor and head athletic trainer for the university during the infancy of the athletics department. On campus, the Griffon Sports Medicine Program is led by Head Athletic Trainer Myron Unzicker ATC, Assistant Athletic Trainer Kate Esely ATC and Athletic Training and Rehabilitation Coor- dinator Becky Johnson ATC. Together, the Sports Medicine Team has more than 50 years of athletic training experience, and provides services to more than 230 Griffon student-athletes in 10 sports.

Missouri Western student-athletes get involved with the community in many ways. During the 2009-10 academic year, Griffon Basketball players were involved in many endeavors including the following: United Way Day at Spratt Stadium, United Way Profit in Education, Griffs Giving Gifts, Ath- lete Reading Week at Skaith Elementary School, The Mayors Thanksgiving Dinner and The Chamber of Commerce Christmas decorating endeavor. “A NEW BEGINING”

During the season, the Griffons partner More than 50 area youth took part in the annual Softball Clinc which is held in the fall season. with Griffon Women’s Basketball to partici- pate in the Elementary School Challenge. Each week during the conference season, members of both teams eat lunch with students at their respective schools stress- ing the importance of good nutrition and exercise. The students are then given free tickets to come see the Griffons play.

The Griffon Student-Athlete Advisory Com- mittee also gets involved in the community as they take part in several service projects throughout the year including “Griffs Giving The Griffon Student-Athlete Advisory Committee after shopping and wrapping gifts for Gifts” and “Night Out on the Griffs.” part of the “Griffs Giving Gifts” community service project.

Working with youngsters at the 2010 Fall Softball Clinic. Griffon softball players along with other MWSU Student-Athletes help out with the Annual Golden Age Games. The games are held for area Nursing Home Residence. They do everything from bowling to playing volleyball.

2011 Griffon Softball - 6 Straight 20 Win Seasons Head Coach Jen Bagley Missouri Western head coach Jen Bagley starts her 10th season at Western. Bagley holds a 295-213 overall record in nine seasons and has coached 32 All-MIAA selections over the past five seasons, including the programs first NFCA All-America selection (Amy Beverly) in 2006. This past season the Griffons finished with an even 28-28 overall record and 10-10 record in MIAA play. Five Griffons (Becky Diehl, Jonnelle Belger, Ashley Hudson, Toni Dance and Shannon Pivovar) earned All-MIAA Honorable Men- tion recognition. In 2009 Bagley won her second MIAA Coach of the Year award and guided her squad to an MIAA record 32 game winning streak. She had five players receive MIAA First Team Honors while two were named to the MIAA Honorable Mention squad. She also guided the Griffons to their fourth NCAA tournament appearance in the last five years. Jen’s team has averaged 33 wins a season since she took over as head coach for the Griffons. Bagley has led the Griffons to back-to-back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Griffons qualified for the NCAA Central Regional Tournament in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 under Bagley, appearing for the first time in school history in 2005. The Griffons posted a 1-2 record in the na- “A NEW BEGINING” tional tournament during their first 3 seasons, getting the programs’ third national tournament win over Winona State 7-0. In the 2009 South Central Super Regional the Griffons went 2-2 advancing all the way to the Super Regional Champion- ship game against Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In 2008, the Griffons finished the season with a 27-28 overall record and 8-10 in the MIAA. Bagley, coached four All- MIAA selections including Freshman of the Year Alison Jones. The Griffons upset the No. 2 seed Central Missouri Jen- nies in the first round of the MIAA tournament. In 2007, the Griffons finished the season 34-26 and 10-8 in the MIAA. Coach Bagley coached four All-MIAA selection including one first team selection in pitcher Lindsey Predovich. In 2006, the Griffons went 40-20 overall, finishing 2nd in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season standings. The second place league finish was its highest ever since joining the MIAA and the NCAA ranks in 1989. Last season, Bagley coached five All-MIAA selections including two first team selections in pitcher Lindsey Pre- dovich and utility player Kara Unger. During the 2005 season, Bagley led the Griffs to its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament, breaking numerous school and MIAA records along the way. Western finished the season at 48-20, setting team records for wins, home runs and runs batted in. Western went from 31 wins in 2004 to 48 wins in 2005. Bagley was named the 2004 Wilson/MIAA Softball Coach-of-the-Year. Bagley came to Western from Humboldt State University where she helped coach a Lumberjack team to a 54-14-1 overall record in 2001 and a 3rd place finish in the NCAA Division II championship tournament. Bagley was at Humboldt State for one season as the pitching coach. Previously, Bagley was the pitching coach and 1st base coach at Minnesota State - Moorhead (formerly Moorhead State University) from 1996-2000. The Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota native earned a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Minnesota-Moorhead in 1996 and was a 3-time all-conference pitcher for the Dragons from 1993-96. Bagley is still the career strikeout leader at MSM, totaling 590 for her career. Bagley was inducted into the Dragon Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2008.

Mandie Nocita enters her first year as the Griffon Assistant Softball Coach. Nocita is no stranger to the program as she started four years at third base from 2006-2009. While at Western, Nocita helped the Griffons to 3 NCAA Divi- sion II Tournament appearances (2006, 2007, 2009) and helped the Griffons to an MIAA record 32 game winning streak during her senior season. Nocita was a 3-time Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection to go along with the 2008-2009 Missouri Western Female Student Athlete of the Year. Nocita’s name is all over the Griffon career record book as she is third in games played (234), second in at bats (748), first in runs scored (172), third in hits (228), fifth in runs batted in (85), third in doubles (50), sixth in home runs (17), fourth in walks (64) and first in stolen bases (82). She is also in the top ten in numerous single season categories which include games played (60), games started (60), at bats (204) twice, runs scored (44, 45 and 47), hits (65 and 63) , doubles (17 and 15), walks (22) and stolen bases (33). Nocita originally from Omaha, Neb. graduated from Western in the spring of 2009 with a degree in Graphic Design. She spent the last year and a half working at St. Joseph Cablevision as the Internet Marketing Specialist. About the MIAA:

President Dr. Robert A. Vartabedian

Dr. Robert Vartabedian began his tenure at Western on July 1, 2008. Dr. Vartabedian succeeded Dr. James Scanlon, who officially retired June 30, 2008, after serving as president for seven years.

Since coming to Western, Dr. Vartabedian has overseen the construction of Remington Hall that was completed in December 2009, and the renovation of Agenstein Hall that will be completed in December 2010. He has taken on a campus outdoor project, including three new pond fountains, building signs and a new en- trance sign. A new residence hall will be completed in Fall 2011. Dr. Vartabedian was also one of the campus team members to secure the Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Western, beginning in the summer of 2010. That project included the construction of a new Griffon Indoor Sports Complex. Western will also open a new Spring Sports Complex in Spring 2011. In Fall 2010, Western had its sixth staright year of record enrollment (6,134).

Dr. Vartabedian served as vice president for academic affairs at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales, N.M., since 2005. In that role, he was chief academic officer for a university with a total enrollment of about 9,500. He oversaw re-accreditation efforts in six departments. The university’s 2007 evaluation by the Higher Learning Commission/North Central Association was accepted without any deficiencies and was showcased as a model application.

Dr. Vartabedian was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. from 1999 to 2005, serving eight months as interim vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2004. As dean, he oversaw 14 academic departments and four centers. As interim vice chancellor, he was the chief administrator for all academic programs for the 8,400 students enrolled.

Dr. Vartabedian graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in speech communication from California State University, Fresno, Calif. in 1974. He received a master of arts in speech communication from Wichita State University, and a doctorate in communication from the University of Oklahoma. He and his wife, Dr. Laurel Vartabedian, have two children: Rob, and daughter-in-law, Audrey, of Amarillo, Texas and Sarah, of Austin, Texas; and one grandson.

“A NEW BEGINING” Athletics Director Dave Williams

Dave Williams became Western’s fifth Athletics Director in March 2008.

Since joining Western, he has overseen improvements to the visitor side of Spratt Memorial Stadium, including new bleachers that hold more than 2,000 and a concessions/rest room building. He was also on the team that secured the Kansas City Chiefs summer training camp at Western, which included construction of a 118,000 square-foot indoor sports complex for Western’s use the rest of the year when camp is not in session. A new spring sports complex is underway, also, so that the Griffon baseball will now play their home games on campus, starting in spring 2011.

In 2010, Western and the City of St. Joseph co-hosted national championships for both NCAA Divsion II women’s basketball and softball. The basketball championship will return to the city in 2011.

Prior to coming to Western, Williams was the Athletics Director at University of Wisconsin-Parkside, a position he had held since 2001. Before that, he had held positions as head men’s golf coach and top assistant basketball coach. In 2006-07, he served as president of the Divisions II Athletics Directors Association.

While Athletics Director at Parkside, 12 of 15 teams qualified for NCAA post-season appearances. Parkside teams won 10 Great Lakes Valley Conference championships in six different sports. Additionally, Williams lured a number of high-profile events to the Parkside campus, including the NCAA Divsion I fencing national championship and the NCAA Division II national wrestling championship.

Williams graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., with a degree in education. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from North Dakota State University.

He and his wife, Suzanne, have three children, Cooper, Carter and Caden.

In addition to his day-to-day duties, Esely served as the Tournament Director for the 2010 Patsy Smith NCAA Women’s Basketball and Softball Championships hosted by MWSU and will serve Associate Director of Athletics/SWA as the director for this year’s women’s basketball championship in March 2011. Following his playing career, he served as a student assistant management. He also received his master’s in sport administration from Wichita State in 2005. for one year. Kramer resides in St. Joseph with wife, Andrea, and daughter, Kellyn. Berneking graduated in December 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation management and business management with an emphasis in marketing. Berneking also received a minor in coaching. He received his master’s in the spring of 2007 in physical education, health and coaching. Ryan Menley Berneking is currently a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
