The thesis will be supported by archaeological data originating from excavations in the Roman installation at Mušov, Moravia, Czech Republic.     CHAPTER ONE PROPAEDEUTICS: THE FORMATION OF A LA TIN SOPHIST Time and Place The extant version of Apuleius' account of his defence of himself against charges of practising magic provides the chronological framework for arranging many of the known events of his life. The trial was conducted before Claudius Maximus, the proconsul of Africa, in the coastal town of Sabrata, some sixty kilometres from Oea (modern Tripoli in Libya), where the events for which he was tried were alleged to have occurred. There is now general agreement that Maximus held the proconsulship of Africa during the one-year period 158/159; thus Apuleius' trial took place at that time as Maximus was conducting the assizes there. 1 The only other datable events recorded in Apuleius' writings are consistent with this date. In the Apology (85.2), he reproaches one of the plaintiffs for arranging to have read into the court record a distorted version of one of his wife's letters in the presence of the statues of the reigning emperor Antoninus Pius ( 138-161). 2 Florida 9, part of a speech presented by Apuleius in Carthage, bids farewell to Severianus at the end of his proconsulate of Africa in 164. 3 This is in fact the latest attested date for the life of Apuleius. 4 Other, less precise dates can be gleaned by a process of inference from, and reference to, the fixed dates.     CHAPTER 4 Viri Militares Moving from West to East in Two Crisis Years (Ad 133 and 162)1 Anthony R. Birley 1 Introduction Something needs to be said about the term viri militares. Livy applied the term to Laelius and other men on Scipio’s staff, to whom the general awarded deco- rations.2 Sallust uses the term homines militares for two praetors of 63 BC.3 His prime example of a homo militaris is M. Petreius, who had “won great glory in the army for more than thirty years as tribune or legate or praetor.”4 Tacitus seems to have applied the term to men of lower rank, when lamenting how under Domitian “so many armies had been lost, in Moesia and Dacia, in Germany and Pannonia, by the folly or cowardice of their generals, so many military men, with so many cohorts, had been defeated in battle and taken prisoner.”5 Augustus’ reform of the political and military system reduced the opportu- nities for lengthy service and of course for winning glory. Corbulo had been up against the changed conditions under Claudius, and is said by Tacitus to have reacted to the emperor’s ban on his campaigning beyond the Rhine by sighing 1 This paper is a postscript to A.R.   • Introduction
    Introduction Is Maximus of Tyre, the Imperial Greek author of 41 orations about philosoph- ical topics, to be regarded as a philosopher, a rhetor, or a sophist? This is the primary question regarding which the author of this study undertook his doc- toral project, of which this book is the final result. It is, all in all, a straight- forward question, but the answer proves to be a lot more complicated, as the main scholarly judgements about the Tyrian so far tend to be more indicative of these scholars’ own interpretative assumptions than of the dynamic intellec- tual background of Imperial literature and philosophy. By means of a detailed study of Maximus’ dialexeis and important concurrent voices, this book pro- poses to resolve this scholarly problem in a fashion that is more historically accurate. For our answers, Maximus’ life and career are sources of information upon which we can hardly rely. Unlike many rhetoricians and philosophers from the period of the so-called ‘Second Sophistic’, Maximus of Tyre, the historical author of the dialexeis, is almost entirely unknown to us. Moreover, as a result of the uncertainty about the adequateness of our sources, most elements of the little information that we do possess can be doubted as well. Consequently, the status of Maximus’ own autobiographical accounts, which are already not very numerous to begin with, is often hard to verify. A first problem arises when we confront the data of our two most impor- tant sources, viz. the Chronicle of Eusebius of Caesarea and the Suda.1 Accord- ing to the former, Maximus of Tyre ‘came to prominence’ around the 232nd Olympiad, which corresponds to the period of 149 to 153ad.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS. M. ANTONINUS was born at Rome, A. D. 121, on the 26th of April. His father, Annius Verus, died while he was praetor. His mother was Domitia Calvilla, also named Lucilla. The Emperor T. Antoninus Pius married Annia Galeria Faustina, the sister of Annius Verus, and was consequently the uncle of M. Antoninus. When Hadrian adopted Antoninus Pius and declared him his suc cessor in the empire, Antoninus Pius adopted both L. Ceionius Commodus, the son of Aelius Caesar, tad M. Antoninus, whose original name was M- Annius Verus. Antoninus then took the name of M. Aelius Aurelius Verus, to which was added the title of Caesar in A. D. 139: the name Aelius belonged to Hadrian©s family, and Aurelius was the name of Antoninus Pius. When M. CHAPTER 1 Apuleius: A Celebrity and His Image Don’t you know that there is nothing a man would rather look at than his own form? —Apuleius , Apology Apuleius is best known today for his racy novel, the Golden Ass (Asi­ nus Aureus ), or Metamorphoses (both titles were current in antiquity); but he also gained celebrity and fortune in his own time as a Platonic philosopher and skillful rhetorician. He claimed to cultivate both phi­ losophy and the nine Muses (Fl. 20.6), and the diversity of his writings is so great that one can almost believe him.1 Most of what we know about his life comes from Apuleius himself, particularly from comments in the Florida (excerpts from his epideictic orations) and the Apology, or De Magia (On Magic), in which he defends himself against a charge of practicing magic.2 He was born in North Africa, probably in Madauros (modern Mdaourouch in Algeria), in the mid-120s AD. After his early education in Carthage, he spent several years studying in Athens, drinking deeply, as he says, of the cups of the Muses: “the cup of poetry, made with artifice, the clear cup of geometry, the sweet cup of music, the dry one of dialectic, and the one of which a person can never have enough—the nectarlike cup of all philosophy.” 3 In this period he probably traveled elsewhere in the Greek east, almost surely to Samos and perhaps to Phrygia as well.4 He then moved on to 1 In addition to the Golden Ass, Apuleius’ extant works include erotic poetry, forensic and epideictic oratory, and philosophical orations and treatises.

    Legal Strategy and Learned Display in Apuleius’ Apology JAMES B. RIVES The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Over the years, many scholars have expressed surprise and even disbelief that Apuleius’ Apology contains so much material that seems so little to the point. The variety and length of what are apparently digressions are indeed striking on even the most cursory glance: anecdotes, quotations, erudite dis- quisitions, displays of learning of every sort are piled on top of each other with an exuberance that seems entirely out of keeping with a serious court case. The usual approach to this material has been to dismiss it as entirely gratuitous, with no other purpose than to show off Apuleius’ erudition.1 Oth- ers, in contrast, have suggested that this sophistic display in fact had a prac- tical purpose: Apuleius used it to associate himself with the proconsul, Clau- dius Maximus, as men of the same educated elite background, in contrast to the ignorant bumpkins who opposed him.2 In this paper I extend the latter approach further by arguing that Apuleius’ displays of learning, far from being gratuitous, are in fact absolutely central to his strategy in countering the charge brought against him. My argument is necessarily somewhat hypothetical, as are indeed most arguments concerning the Apology that attempt to go beyond philological and literary analysis. The Apology is a text that to a large extent exists in glorious isolation; there are simply no other sources independent of the Apology itself that attest to the events or individuals with which it is con- cerned.
