The simple answer: college. However, our more complex task is to help each student reach higher education while building faith, acquiring knowledge and wisdom, and accumulating skills that will enable success in their chosen field, in civic life, and in their families. De La Salle “Makes Ready the Way” not just through rigorous education, but by creating a community and cultivating faith, hope and opportunity. We are committed to serving families who would not otherwise be able to choose a college-preparatory Catholic high school. The economic need is becoming more significant. The median income of our families has fallen from around $40,000 per year four years ago (for a family of four) to around $29,000 today. We are serving more students with fewer options than ever in our 13-year history – and sending them on to great schools and promising futures. But how do we successfully achieve this, when only 7% of our budget comes from tuition? It’s because of YOU: the businesses that employ our students and the individuals and organizations who give financial support. This report to you is on the outcomes of the past year and on our students who, with their incredible effort and passion to achieve, give so much back to our community. Powell |President DE LA SALLE NORTH 2013 Annual Report < > Our Mission De La Salle North Catholic High School prepares young men and women for college by providing a rigorous faith-based education emphasizing math, science, and language arts. More than 95 percent of our graduating seniors earn acceptance to college each year. Located in north Portland, Oregon, De La Salle is racially, spiritually, and culturally diverse. We offer a private college preparatory education to urban students from low-income families with limited educational options, turning no one away due to an inability to pay. We’re known as “The School That Works,” because our students are employed one day per week in a unique Corporate Internship Program in which they earn money to finance 50 percent of the cost of their own education. < > DE LA SALLE NORTH 2013 Annual Report | 03 Our Students & Families Student Demographics We accept all motivated, interested Families cannot enroll unless their family and capable students with a broad range income is 75% of Portland’s median Female: 56% Male: 44% of abilities regardless of whether income or less they can pay tuition Students enter De La Salle an average 66% of the student body is eligible for Black/African-American: 35% of years behind reading and Hispanic/Latino: 26% 1.5 in federal free and reduced price White/Caucasian: 19% math meal programs Multiracial: 12% Asian: 5% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander: 2% Other: 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native: 1% Urban students are often challenged with poor economic circumstances, difficult family lives, and weak educational backgrounds. Add to that the fact that local Portland public high schools suffer from high Roman Catholic: 43% Christian (Non Roman Catholic): 46% drop-out rates and weak college enrollment, and the future could look bleak. As a response, the Lasallian Hindu: 1% Christian Brothers were inspired by their mission of service and education for low-income children to Other/Unknown: 11% open De La Salle in 2000. Our singular goal is that every De La Salle student graduates from college, prepared for a future full of hope and possibility. 04 | DE LA SALLE NORTH 2013 Annual Report < > Our Academic Program – Making Ready the Way for Academic Success Academic summer school 19:1 Student/teacher ratio *& foundation classes for those who need it 74% of faculty have an advanced degree Average class size: One college counselor & two full-time student 24 counselors De La Salle prepares the way to college for underserved students by immersing them in a positive environment and challenging them with high expectations and a rigorous curriculum. To reach grade level at the outset, students take remediation and foundation classes. To proceed beyond to academic achievement, they are engaged by small classes and individual attention in a student-focused, supportive environment. These young men and women are not alone in their journey toward college; their De La Salle peers are also college-bound and they are guided by a caring, fiercely dedicated, and accomplished faculty. < > DE LA SALLE NORTH 2013 Annual Report | 05 Faith-Filled, Competent, College-Ready Citizens The outcomes of our college preparatory and work-study program are remarkable. De La Salle students, on average, begin high school one or more grade levels behind on national academic standards and may face significant economic, family and social challenges. However, we are proud to report, they successfully graduate high school and achieve excellent educational results in spite of the odds and far beyond their circumstances. 95% of graduating seniors are De La Salle alumni are accepted to college 3.5x more likely to earn a Bachelor’s Class of 2013 earned more than degree within 6 years $3.8M in scholarships (compared to students in 2013 with similar backgrounds and demographics) 87% of graduating seniors have enrolled in college, nearly 2x the rate of peers with similar backgrounds and demographics 06 | DE LA SALLE NORTH 2013 Annual Report < > Our Corporate Internship Program – Making Ready the Way for Workplace Success A four-student team Each student works one day Two-week summer training a week program Corporate Internship provides the equivalent of (five days a month) for new full-time employee entry-level white collar Program one in an student participants position Each student has the equivalent of one Each student finances Employers experience full year of work experience by about 50% of the cost increased workplace graduation of their education diversity, motivated student employees, mentorship, and community development One of the unique aspects of De La Salle is our Corporate Internship Program. Each day, a quarter of our students are off-campus, working at their jobsite from about 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in an entry-level, white-collar position. As members of “The School That Works,” every student develops personal responsibility and confidence, acquires valuable skills through direct experience, and earns funds to help pay for their education.
