He was subsumed in records and comics and books and art, constantly collecting artifacts of culture and absorbing them into his world. Shelve American Splendor: On the Job. How can there be three people with such an unusual name in the world, let alone in one city? Photographs of scenic splendor from every corner of America are featured on this calendar. There were multiple references to the percentage of his income that he would earn in retirement, therefore making retirement not an option, and also many mentions of how no one likes his comics due to the lack of intelligence of the general comic audience. What I found most interesting about Pekar is that his stories don't have a beginning, middle, and end, but are basically all middles. Good blend of strips, but they're so much more enjoyable in their original sequences. Giamatti is not a million miles away from other characters he has played, in movies such as " Storytelling ," " Private Parts " and " Man on the Moon ," but Davis achieves an uncanny transformation. The experimentation is apparent, with one strip emphasising cross- hatching, the next pointillism, but the storytelling is deficient. These differ from the majority of his material here, being far more anecdotal than observational, and point toward the way Pekar would progress once he ceased self-publishing. He was as critical of the world as he was endeared to it, admiring the little things in life as much as he despised the complications that came his way. Our Cancer Year by Harvey Pekar. There is something most definitely wrong. Tentatively, the figure steps away from the mirror, leaving the frame empty and dark. ANGLE ON BED Like a ghost, the naked man (Harvey) stands over his bed staring down at his sleeping wife (Joyce). In the eerie light, he’s almost translucent. HARVEY (faintly) Joyce ... Joyce? Kane 2013 i ABSTRACT This dissertation explores ways in which the graphic narrative (graphic novel) format for storytelling, known as sequential art, can be adapted for undergraduate-level introductory textbooks across disciplines. Currently, very few graphic textbooks exist, and many of them lack the academic rigor needed to give them credibility. My goal in this dissertation is to examine critically both the strengths and weaknesses of this art form and formulate a set of standards and procedures necessary for developing new graphic textbooks that are scholastically viable for use in college-level instruction across disciplines. To the ends of establishing these standards, I have developed a four-pronged information-gathering approach. First I read as much pre factum qualitative and quantitative data from books, articles, and Internet sources as possible in order to establish my base of inquiry. Second, I created a twelve-part dissertation blog (graphictextbooks.blogspot.com) where I was able to post my findings and establish my integrity for my research among potential interviewees. Third, I interviewed 16 professional graphic novel/graphic textbook publishers, editors, writers, artists, and scholars as well as college professors and librarians. Finally, I sent out an online survey consisting of a sample chapter of an existing graphic textbook to college professors and asked if the content of the source material was potentially effective for their own instruction in undergraduate teaching.

Despite—or perhaps because of—his own sexual preferences, he tries to bully his young daughter, much against her wishes and inclinations, into assuming a stereotypically feminine identity, telling her, for instance, to wear dresses and ribbons in her hair (see Fig. 2.1). Te young Alison is filled with a deep sense of joy when she catches sight of a woman with a man’s haircut and clothes while accompanying her father on a business trip to Phila- delphia. To Alison, the stranger represents tangible evidence of the existence of alternative female role models, and it dawns on her that in the future she may be able to find a physical identity for herself that truly reflects her innermost feelings.

Rather than remaining silent in the face of this kind of trauma, the ill person who translates her experience into narrative empowers herself by claiming ownership over her story. Recently, the Internet and its complementary new technologies have paved the way for new kinds of expression about cancer for the cancer patient community, enabling individuals with cancer to reinterpret their diagnosis and reclaim authority both over their illness and the medical system. In particular, cancer patients now use the Internet as a safe place to share humor and other forms of entertainment in order to cope with their illness through a number of channels including web comics, blogs, message boards, games and web sites. This project investigates how the Internet and other new technologies enable individuals to use humor and other kinds of "cancertainment" to reclaim authority over their illness, refigure their relationship to those with cancer and those without, and reimagine how society should make meaning from cancer as a disease and as a social and personal experience.
