The Temiskaming Foundation has granted to many celebrations and events in and around our community to enhance our culture and heritage, celebrating our Canada 150. Your donation, big or small makes a positive impact within our community. As I am finishing my term as President, I would like to thank Claire, the Board of Directors and Peter for this opportunity. I have learned so much and will continue to do my best contribute to our Community that I am proud to be a part of. I would like to thank our dedicated Board of Directors and Advisors for their commitment and dedication to making the TTF what it is today, and especially Claire, our Executive Director for continuously going beyond the call of duty to make sure the vision of the Foundation never looses momentum. Thank you,

35 Why do people set up funds the way they do?

Here is the answer for one donor:

The Robert and Margaret Pollock (Swastika) Memorial Fund This fund was established by John A. Pollock in memory of his parents. John’s mother, Sarah Margaret Fawcett Pollock was an honours graduate from Queen’s University in 1923. Ten of Mrs. Pollock’s grandchildren and several great grand children have graduated from Queen’s University. Mrs. Pollock went on to teach and in 1923, she became the first principal of Swastika Public School.

John’s father Robert was one of the pioneers of Swastika. He prospected and worked around the area from 1910-‐1919. From 1919-‐1935 he was the Road Inspector for the Department of Northern Development. He served as a member of Teck Township (Kirkland Lake and Swastika) council from 1921-‐1928. It was during this time that Swastika was supplied with electricity and waterworks.

This history set the path for John. When he established the fund, he decided to divide the income allocation into two scholarships. The first, a four-‐year bursary, to a graduate of Kirkland Lake Collegiate Vocational Institute who is studying Engineering at Queen’s University. The other one to a grade 8 student from Swastika who writes the best essay on “Why I am proud to be Canadian”.

In 2017, Jakob Rosko-‐Fong received $750, his ar third ye of the four-‐year award.

Since the establishment of this fund in 1996, 26 students have this received awards from fund.

In years that there is no new scholarship recipient, a grant is forwarded to the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake – in 2017, this was a $750 grant.

This award was established to commemorate the lives of Robert & Margaret Pollock, two pioneers of Swastika who contributed to the growth of the village of of Swastika and the Township Teck.
