  • Luke 16:19-31)
“A Final Word from Hell” (Luke 16:19-31) If you’ve ever flown on an airplane you’ve probably noticed that in the seat pocket ahead of you is a little safety information card. It contains lots of pictures and useful information illustrating what you should do if, for example, the plane you’re entrusting your life with should have to ditch in the ocean. Not exactly the kind of information most people look forward to reading as they’re preparing for a long flight. The next time you’re on an airplane, look around and see how many people you can spot actually reading the safety cards. Nowadays, I suspect you’ll find more people talking or reading their newspaper instead. But suppose you had a reason to believe that there was a problem with the flight you were on. Suddenly, the information on that card would be of critical importance—what seemed so unimportant before takeoff could mean the difference between life and death. In the same way, the information in the pages of God’s Word is critically important. The Bible contains a message that means the difference between eternal life and death. Yet, for many of us, our commitment to the Bible is more verbal than actual. We affirm that the Bible is God’s Word, yet we do not read it or study it as if God was directly communicating to us. If left with a choice, many of us would prefer to read the newspaper or watch TV. Why is this? Certainly one reason for this is that there is not a sense of urgency in our lives.

  • R.E. Prayer Requirement Guidelines
R.E. Prayer Requirement Guidelines This year in the Religious Education Program we are re-instituting Prayer Requirements for each grade level. Please review the prayers required to be memorized, recited from text, \understood, or experienced for the grade that you are teaching (see p. 1) Each week, please take some class time to work on these prayers so that the R.E. students are able not only to recite the prayers but also to understand what they are saying and/or reading. The Student Sheet (p. 2) will need to be copied for each of your students, the student’s name placed on the sheet, and grid completed for each of the prayers they are expected to know, or understand, or recite from text, or experience. You may wish to assign the Assistant Catechist or High School Assistant to work, individually, with the students in order to assess their progress. We will be communicating these prayer requirements to the parents of your students, and later in the year, each student will take their sheet home for their parents to review their progress. We appreciate your assistance in teaching our youth to know their prayers and to pray often to Jesus… to adore God, to thank God, to ask God’s pardon, to ask God’s help in all things, to pray for all people. Remind your students that God always hears our prayers, but He does not always give us what we ask for because we do not always know what is best for others or ourselves. “Prayer is the desire and attempt to communicate with God.” Remember, no prayer is left unanswered! • Introduction to Community Groups
INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY GROUPS WHAT IS A COMMUNITY GROUP? Community groups are small gatherings of people (Christian and non) that meet regularly for friendship, accountability, study and prayer, laughter, and occasionally tears. Community groups are an essential expression of the mission of Mars Hill Church. They’re a place where we learn more about Jesus and life together. They’re the place where we wrestle with the truths of the Bible and encourage one another toward the life that God intends for us. Each community group is unique, shaped by its neighborhood and the people who attend. However, you can expect a weekly gathering in a residence that involves food, conversation, prayer, discussion for applying the Bible to practical living, and service in the neighborhood. At the heart of each community group is the desire to see an authentic community marked by love for Jesus, one another, and the neighborhood. WHY SHOULD I JOIN A COMMUNITY GROUP? The God of the Bible is a Trinitarian God who is one and three persons: Father, Son, and Spirit. God has made us in his image, which means we are made for community and friendship. And when we are not living in community we suffer because life in a sinful world is too complex and tempting to journey alone. Therefore, community groups are a place where we can live in relationship with one another through the ups and downs of life. HOW DO I GET CONNECTED TO A COMMUNITY GROUP? The easiest way to get connected is on Sunday: before or after the service, stop by the info desk at the campus where you attend.

  • 1 Ted Kirnbauer Luke 20:1-26 6/18/17 Jesus Had Entered
1 Ted Kirnbauer Luke 20:1-26 6/18/17 Jesus had entered Jerusalem on Sunday with robes and branches laid before Him and shouts of praise for “the King who comes in the name of the Lord” (Lk. 19:28 ff.). He then left the city and returned the following day (Monday) when He cleansed the temple (Lk. 19:45-48). The events in 20:1-21:36 occur on Tuesday. In the controversies that follow, we see that Jesus is in control of the events surrounding His final visit to Jerusalem. 20:1 On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, 20:2 and they spoke, saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?" 20:3 Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me: 20:4 "Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?" 20:5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why did you not believe him?' 20:6 "But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet." 20:7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 20:8 And Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things." Luke 20:1-8 centers on Jesus’ authority.
