* William Penn asked King Charles II to grant him land in North Amerca. King Charles II agreed because he owed a debt to his father.

* William Penn established the colony in the late 1600s.

* The word Pennsylvania means “Penn’s woods.”

* William Penn joined a religious group known as the .

* He wanted Pennsylvania to be a place of religious tolerance where people of different religions should live together in peace.

* William Penn’s second wife, Hannah Callowhill Penn became an important leader of the colony.

*Hannah Penn became the leader of the Pennsylvania colony when William Penn was sick and also after he died. This was an amazing thing because women were not usually leaders at this time in our country. She is considered the first woman leader of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s Government

* In 1682, the assembly created a series of laws knows as the Great Law. It outlined the rules

people of Pennsylvania would be expected to follow. It also allowed colonists to choose their own religion and to worship freely.

* In 1701, William Penn wrote the Charter of Privileges which allowed the assembly to suggest new laws.

* A lot of the land in Pennsylvania was controlled by the Lenni Lenape.

The Colony Grows

* Immigrants came to Pennsylvania from many countries because they wanted religious freedom and to escape war.

* In the early 1700s the Pennsylvania colony grew because people traveled here from Europe.

* As more settlers came to Pennsylvania, colonists needed more land.

* The Walking Purchase was a treaty that allowed colonists to take

more land than the Lenni Lenape planned to sell.

* Chief Lappawinsoe was a Lenni Lenape leader who agreed to the

Walking Purchase.
