Stambler Associate Professor of Saxophone Joanne Rutkowski Professor of Music Education Music Education Graduate Program Chair *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ii Abstract As one of the premier tenor saxophonists of the twentieth century, Stan Getz contributed significantly to the jazz landscape of the United States, most notably in the early 1960s as his performances of bossa nova resulted in the genre becoming popular across the nation. Although Getz became associated with bossa nova, those who have followed his career understand his importance to swing in the 1940s, bebop in the 1950s, and fusion in the 1970s. But for an artist that has played such a critical role in the establishment and evolution of jazz over decades of work, little attention has been paid to Getz by scholars. Although widely hailed as one of the most influential jazz saxophonists, little exists in terms of understanding the musical aspects that constitute his playing style, beyond cursory analyses of his tone or investigations into specific periods of his career. This paper explores the creativity driving one of Getz’s most critically acclaimed albums, Sweet Rain (1967). It will address Getz’s career, along with those of his band members Chick Corea, Ron Carter, and Grady Tate. This paper will also consider the difficulties that arise in jazz analysis and consider aesthetic issues associated with improvisation. By analyzing Getz’s solos with respect to his use of referential collections, motives, and reflective/reactive processes, this thesis uncovers the virtuosic characteristics of his improvisations and builds an argument that supports the idea that he contributed significantly to jazz performance as a whole. iii Table of Contents List of Musical Examples Introduction Considered the “turning point” (Medaglia, 1960, p. 79) in modern popular Brazi- lian music due to the representativeness and importance it reached in the Brazi- lian music scene in the subsequent years, João Gilberto’s LP, Chega de saudade (1959, Odeon, 3073), was released in 1959 and after only a short time received critical and public acclaim. The musicologist Brasil Rocha Brito published an im- portant study on Bossa Nova in 1960 affirming that “never before had a happe- ning in the scope of our popular music scene brought about such an incitement of controversy and polemic” (Brito, 1993, p. 17). Before the Chega de Saudade recording, however, in February of 1958, João Gilberto participated on the LP Can- ção do Amor Demais (Festa, FT 1801), featuring the singer Elizete Cardoso. The recording was considered a sort of presentation recording for Bossa Nova (Bollos, 2010), featuring pieces by Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim, including arrangements by Jobim. On the recording, João Gilberto interpreted two tracks on guitar: “Chega de Saudade” (Jobim/Moraes) and “Outra vez” (Jobim). One of those started several years ago when I stumbled across a recording of Only Heaven, a set of songs for soprano by Ricky Ian Gordon to text of Langston Hughes. Intrigued – we sang Ricky’s Love, My Sweet Rain a few years ago. I adore the poetry of Langston Hughes and I fell madly in love with the music. It sang to me of optimism, of people living their lives unfettered by the restrictions of society.

During this period, jazz was presented in a variety of ways in different venues, on four of which I focus: New Orleans-style jazz commonly performed for the same audiences in Rhythm Clubs and in concert halls (as shown by George Webb’s Dixielanders at the Red Barn public house and the King’s Hall); clubs hosting different styles of jazz on different nights of the week that brought in different audiences (such as the 100 Club on Oxford Street); clubs with a fixed stylistic ideology that changed venue, taking a regular fan base and musicians to different locations (such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club); and jazz in theatres (such as the Little Theatre Club and Mike West- brook’s compositions for performance in the Mermaid Theatre).

Dizzy Gillespie was known for his soaring trumpet lines, his puffed cheeks and the tilted bell of his trumpet. He was loved by musicians and fans for his engaging personality and showmanship. Gillespie was inspired to play music by his father who was a bricklayer and part- time musician. Gillespie began playing the piano at the age of 4. He taught himself to play the trumpet by trial and error, with the help of a few friends at the age of 12. In 1935, Gillespie moved to Philadelphia with his mother, after the death of his father.

Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer.
