Cohen Washington, D.C. 2010 The Concept of “Sister Churches” In Catholic-Orthodox Relations since Vatican II Will T. Cohen, Ph.D. Director: Paul McPartlan, D.Phil. Closely associated with Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement in the latter half of the 20 th century was the emergence of the expression “sister churches” used in various ways across the confessional division. Patriarch Athenagoras first employed it in this context in a letter in 1962 to Cardinal Bea of the Vatican Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and soon it had become standard currency in the bilateral dialogue. Yet today the expression is rarely invoked by Catholic or Orthodox officials in their ecclesial communications. As the Polish Catholic theologian Waclaw Hryniewicz was led to say in 2002, “This term…has now fallen into disgrace.” This dissertation traces the rise and fall of the expression “sister churches” in modern Catholic-Orthodox relations and argues for its rehabilitation as a means by which both Catholic West and Orthodox East may avoid certain ecclesiological imbalances toward which each respectively tends in its separation from the other. Catholics who oppose saying that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church are sisters, or that the church of Rome is one among several patriarchal sister churches, generally fear that if either of those things were true, the unicity of the Church would be compromised and the Roman primacy rendered ineffective.

Desautels Faculty of Music University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba John Tanner March 2012 2 ABSTRACT: Music is a part of life and worship in many religions, especially Christianity, and the Roman Catholic Church has been involved throughout her history in the development of music in the Western world. The Second Vatican Council had a major impact on the Roman Catholic Church in many respects, including on her music. Interviews were conducted with members of St. John Brebeuf Church in order to assess both this impact and their perception of music generally. The author encountered different opinions: most were favorable to the “folk” style of music now prevalent, and many had useful insights for ongoing unity, purpose and perspective in the church’s use of music to enhance the worship of the faithful. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My heartfelt thanks to Professor Elroy Friesen, who allowed me to apply to his Master’s Program in Choral Conducting at the Marcel A. As milestones of the global interfaith movement, American religious freedom and pluralism, and the relation of religion to modernity, the Chicago Parliaments of Religions offer a unique window through which to view this Catholic struggle at work in the religious public square created by the Parliaments and the evolution of that struggle over the course of the century framed by the two Chicago events. In relation to other religions, the Catholic Church stretched itself from an exclusivist position of being the only true and good religion to an inclusivist position of recognizing that truth and good can be present in other religions. Uniquely, Catholic involvement in the centennial Parliament made the Church stretch itself even further, beyond the exclusivist-inclusivist spectrum into a pluralist framework in which the Church acted humbly as one religion among many.

But, you can the Congregation for Evangelization and, in 2004, be sure that what He will finally realize in you will he was named apostolic nuncio to Indonesia and be something great—if you only allow Him.
