Meaghan Morris What are the links between stories and the wider social world—the contextual conditions for stories to be told and for stories to be received? What brings people to give voice to a story at a particular historical moment? … and as the historical moment shifts, what stories may lose their significance and what stories may gain in tellability? (Plummer 25). The vantage points from which we customarily view the world are, as William James puts it, ‘fringed forever by a more’ that outstrips and outruns them (Jackson 23-24). Poetry from the future interrupts the habitual formation of bodies, and it is an index of a time to come in which what today exists potently—even if not (yet) effectively— but escapes us will find its time. (Keeling, ‘Looking for M—’ 567) 1 The first time I saw Baz Luhrmann’s Australia I laughed till I cried. To be exact, I cried laughing at dinner after watching the film with a group of old friends at an inner suburban cinema in Sydney. During the screening itself I laughed and I cried. As so often in the movies, our laughter was public and my tears were private, left to dry on my face lest the dabbing of a tissue or an audible gulp should give my emotion away. The theatre was packed that night with a raucously critical audience groaning at the dialogue, hooting at moments of high melodrama (especially Jack Thompson’s convulsive death by stampeding cattle) and cracking jokes at travesties of history perceived on screen.

Tripping on the Light Fantastic: a bit of a look at Australian film ADRIAN MITCHELL In the beginning is the word: there has to be a script. But even before a word is said there’s light, and camera, and action. Films are before all else about light, and about what can be realised through light. That pre-eminence of light was acknowledged in the old-time movie theatres, in the custom, now regrettably lapsed, of having the projection illuminating the screen before the curtains were drawn open, so that the promised world of light could be glimpsed before revelation, symbolically seen through a veil which then parted — and behold, a new heaven and a new earth. Those who arrived late, after the houselights had gone down, followed their own little subdued pool of light, the usherette’s torch, down the carpeted aisles. What the film shows, what the camera has seen, is what we also come to see — the already realised. It is there waiting for us, a pre-existing given, a re-presentation of the dance of light, understood by its reference to that other world we have, for the moment, turned our backs upon, a world reviewed askance. And when the image before us approximates to the one behind us (the great outdoors?) then we might well wonder where in the world we are. The new wave of Australian film, which has deliberately eschewed the stylised and formulaic, and which has not yet solidified into conventions of its own (‘What’s matter but a hardening of the light?’ as the poet David Campbell so incisively observed), has made such an interzone of freedom its own — as it has also taken liberties with it.

2008 BOX OFFICE BACKGROUNDER This backgrounder provides information and context on the number of local and internationally produced films with reported box office earnings in Australian cinemas from 1 January to 31 December 2008. What was the total box office in Australia? In 2008, the Australian box office was $945.4 million, the highest annual gross on record. These earnings mark a rise of 5.6 per cent on the previous year and an increase of 4.2 per cent on 2004, the only other year to record a gross of more than $900 million. How many films were released in Australia? There were 301 films released into the Australian market in 2008: • 33 of these were Australian (or 11.0 per cent of films released), 22 features and 11 documentaries • 158 were from the US (or 52.5 per cent of films released), and • 24 were from the UK (or 8.0 per cent of films released). In addition, 89 films released in earlier years were still screening, plus two films due to be released in 2009 that had preview screenings in 2008. This brought the total number of films earning box office in 2008 to 392, of which 40 (10.2 per cent) were Australian, 213 (54.3 per cent) were from the US and 29 (7.4 per cent) were from the UK.
