Getting Started with the Tonalities music analysis software Anthony Pople, University of Nottingham, March 2002 (v6.25/03) The support of the AHRB for the Tonalities project is gratefully acknowledged. Overview This software is part of a larger project that lays stress on the multiplicity of tonal systems in music, focusing particularly on Western music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It allows you to analyse passages of music in terms of differing tonal systems that may be configured to a high level of detail from a range of supplied options. To use the software effectively, it is important to have an understand of the basic concepts of the underlying theory, above all: · segmentation · prolonging gamut · connective gamut · the distinction between spelled and unspelled matches of chords and gamuts · the distinction between functional and inclusive chords and gamuts These concepts are explained briefly in what follows, but it is not the purpose of the guide to present the music theory component of the Tonalities project in full. The remainder of this user guide also assumes you are familiar to some extent with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Excel. The software has been developed in Excel 97 and will not run under earlier versions (though it seems to run under later versions up to and including Excel 2002 – the version supplied in Office XP). I have run it under Windows 98 and Windows Me, though not Windows NT, 2000 or XP. Installing the software If the software has been pre-installed, please skip this section. The Tonalities software is supplied as an Add-In to Microsoft® Excel, running under Microsoft® Windows®. -

The first is to present a comparison of recent theories of Balinese music, specifically with regard to techniques of melodic elaboration. By comparing the work of Wayan Rai, Made Bandem, Wayne Vitale, and Michael Tenzer, I will investigate how various scholars choose to conceptualize melodic elaboration in modern genres of Balinese gamelan. The second goal is to illustrate the varying degrees to which contemporary composers in the form known as Tabuh Kreasi are expanding this musical vocabulary. In particular I will examine their innovative approaches to melodic elaboration. Analysis of several examples will illustrate how some composers utilize and distort standard compositional techniques in an effort to challenge listeners' expectations while still adhering to indigenous concepts of balance and flow. [A] composer’s musical language should be instinctive, personal, and natural to him.” (p. 157) Bruneau and Duke’s illuminating guide to the life and music of Vancouver composer Jean Coulthard (“th” pronounced as in “Earth Music” (‘cello, 1986) or “Threnody” (various choral and instrumental, 1933, 1947, 1960, 1968, 1970, 1981, 1986) con- tributes substantially and distinctively in form and detail to the growing array of biographical material on internationally-known Canadian composers of the twen- tieth century. Coulthard (1908–2000) began writing music in childhood and con- tinued as long as she could. Composition dates in the 428-page catalogue of the Coulthard manuscripts which can be found at the Web page http://www.library. ubc.ca/archives/u_arch/2007.06.27.cat.pdf, and was prepared by the authors to accompany the posthumous third accession to the composer’s archives, range from 1917 to 1997. The catalogue is housed at the University of British Columbia at the Web site http://www.library.ubc.ca/archives/u_arch/coulth.html. Her works span all forms from delightful graded pieces for young piano students, through choral and chamber music, to opera and large orchestral scores. The book addresses students of Canadian classical music, women’s issues, and the performing arts. -

USE OF THE SIMULTANEOUS CROSS-RELATION BY SIXTEENTH CENTURY ENGLISH AND CONTINENTAL COMPOSERS Tim Montgomery Music H 391 LmnARY ~tJ=N-IVE-R-·SJTY OF RICHMOND YIRGINIA 2317S The principle of the s~multaneous cross-relation in vocal music has generally and commonly been associated with the English composers of the sixteenth century.(M p.71; R 824 n.J4) This ~ssumption has been more specifically connected with secular music, namely the English madrigal.(Dy p.13) To find the validity of this assumption in relation to both secular and sacred music I have C()mpared the available vocal music of three English composers, two major and one minor: Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), William Byrd (1.543-1623), and Thomas Whythorne (1528-1596). In deciding whether the simultaneous cross-relation was an aspect of English music exclusively, I examined vocal music of three composers of the continent, con temporaries of the English, for the use, if any, of the simul taneous cross-relation. -

CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by IUScholarWorks Phrase Painting and Goal Orientation In Two Late Gesualdo Madrigals MICHAEL E BURDICK I The late madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo have challenged the minds and ears of theorists for over three centuries. This challenge comes largely from the unorthodox type of chromatic harmony that we find in certain passages-a chromaticism that seems to belie its own place in the history of Western music. Of the late madrigals of Gesualdo, two of the most frequently quoted and analyzed are "Io pur respiro" and "Moro lasso" from his sixth book of madrigals. These two works, likewise, are the focus of at tention in this article. It is not the intent of this paper to attempt an explana tion of Gesualdo's unique chromaticism in terms of the harmonic practices of the Renaissance or Baroque periods. This has already been attempted by numerous authors over the years, with highly diversified and controversial results. However, some of these results will be presented here as a preliminary setting to the principal goal of this paper, which is to examine two structural principles in operation in these madrigals that offer to give greater understanding and meaning to the chord progressions themselves. Perhaps the most objective attempt to catalogue Gesualdo's chromaticism in a stylistic approach can be found in John Clough's article "The Leading Tone in Direct TWO GESUALDO MADRIGALS 17 Chromaticism: From Renaissance to Baroque."l The article gives a summary of different types of chromatic progres sions, with the emphasis on chromatic-third relationships (the chromatic-third progression being the salient feature of Gesualdo's more unconventional chromatic progressions). -

The guide should be used alongside the Council’s Guidance on Equalities in Designing and Printing. Please note this is for PCs only and will not work on Macs. Firstly, on your keyboard make sure the Num Lock is switched on, or the codes shown in this document won’t work (this button is found above the numeric keypad on the right of your keyboard). By pressing the ALT key (to the left of the space bar), holding it down and then entering a certain sequence of numbers on the numeric keypad, it's very easy to get almost any accented character you want. For example, to get the letter “ô”, press and hold the ALT key, type in the code 0 2 4 4, then release the ALT key. The number sequences shown from page 3 onwards work in most fonts in order to get an accent over “a, e, i, o, u”, the vowels in the English alphabet. In other languages, for example in French, the letter "c" can be accented and in Spanish, "n" can be accented too. Many other languages have accents on consonants as well as vowels. -
