InstallersResponsibility: Blaupartsrecommendsthatinstallerstakethenecessarytimetothoroughlyfollowthestepsoutlinedinthisbulletintopreventfuturelabor costs,aswellasanyinconvenienceaftertheinstallationofthewaterpumpincludedinthistimingbeltkit.Ithasbeennotedthatduetotime constraints,inconvenience,andprofit,manyindividualsandmechanicsalike,donottaketheextratimeneededtothoroughlyflushtheentire vehiclecoolingsystempriortotheinstallationofthenewwaterpump.Justdrainingthecoolingsystemandrefillingthesystemisnotenough! Prematurewaterpumpfailure(waterpumpsealsandbearings)canoccurbecauseoffailingtotakethetimetoflushtheentirecoolingsystem anditsrelatedcomponents.Oftenwhenproblemsarise,suchasacoolantleak,thenewwaterpumpisblamedasthecausewheninfactthe oppositeistrue.Itisusuallybecausetheinstallerhasneglectedtofollowthesestepslistedbelow.

FlushingtheCoolingSystem: Itisimperativethatthecoolingsystembethoroughlyflushedofallaccumulatedsiltandsedimentbuildup,includingallaftermarketcooling systemadditives,orstopleakproductsthatmayhavebeenaddedtothecoolingsystem,pastorpresent. Thiswouldentailflushingtheradiator, block,heatercoreandhosesetc.UseOnlyTap Water toflushtheentirecoolingsystem.DONOT USECoolingSystemFlushProducts sincemanycontainmuriaticand/orotheracids.Remnantsofsuchacidsleftinthecoolingsystemcancauseyournewwaterpumpto prematurelyfail.

Water PumpInstallation: Takeextratimeincleaningthewaterpumpgasket/o-ringmatingsurfaces.Makesurethesurfaceisfreeofalloldgasketmaterialandcorrosion buildupbeforeinstallingyournewwaterpump.Itmaybenecessarytousealightabrasivescuffpadorrazorblade.Gasketsealingagents shouldNOT beusedifyourwaterpumpincludesapapergasket.Ifthewaterpumpmountingsurfaceareaontheengineblockisthroughly cleaned,smoothandfreefromoldgasketdebris,gasketsealingagents(FormaGasket productsingelorsprayforms)arenotneeded.Sealing agentsvaryincompositionandintendedusage,andwhenusedinconjunctionwithpapergasketsmayaffectthepapergaskets’ longterm abilitytocompressand/orperformitssealingfunction. Appropriategellikegasketsealingagentsshouldonlybeusedinthecaseofsevere pittingoftheengineblocksurfacewherebyanevenandsmoothmountingsurfaceforthewaterpumpisnotattainable.Doublecheckallwater pumpmountingboltsfortightness. A looseormissingwaterpumporthermostathousingboltcanresultinaleakandfalselyattributingthe waterpumpasdefective.

FillingtheCoolingSystem: IMPORTANT:Readthe Warningsontheantifreezecoolantbottle,improperuseisHARMFUL orFATAL.Useonly Audi, VwG-12antifreeze coolantwhichwasincludedinyourtimingbeltkit. Thesebottlescontaincoolantthatisconcentrated. Youmustdilutethecoolant.Mix50% coolantwith50%DEIONIZED WATER.DEIONIZED WATERISPREFERRED.However,ifitisnotavailableusedistilledwater.DONOT MIX TAP WATERwithnewcoolantifatallpossible. TapwatervariesinPhandmineralcontentanddependingonthesefactors,canadversely effectyournewwaterpumpandothercoolingsystemcomponents.

Water PumpBreakinPeriod: Allwaterpumpsareinspectedandairpressuretestedatthefactoryforanyleaks.However,newwaterpumpsdohaveabreakinperiod.Itis notuncommonforanewwaterpumptohavesomeseepageofcoolantfromthedischargeholebelowthewaterpumppulleyshortlyafterstart up. Thisisbecausetheuniquesealmaterialinthenewwaterpumpisdesignedto‘bedin’ astheimpellershaftspins.Slightweepingor dampnessfromoraroundthedischargeholeorcapisallowableforatleast100milesafterinstallationandshouldnotbeattributedasa defectivewaterpump.

Maintenance: MixingotherbrandsofunauthorizedantifreezecoolantswiththeapprovedG-12antifreezecoolantincludedinyournewtimingbeltkitcan alsocauseanadversechemicalreactiontoG-12coolant,causingthecoolanttogelandclot. Thiscandamagethenewwaterpump,plugthe coolingsystem,andweakenotherplasticcoolingsystemcomponentssuchas,theradiatorandplasticcoolanthoseconnections.

1) Positionthevehicleintheairusingacertifieldautomotiveliftandremovethepassengersidefrontwheel. 2) Removetheprotectivesplashpanusinga T-25 Torxdriver. 3) Removethelowerpipebyremoving(1)10mmnutand(2)springclips,oneateachend. (Image1) 4) Loosenandremovethepassengersidefenderlinerbyremoving(2)pushclipsfromcorrespondingstuds. (Image2) 5) Loosenandremovethedecorativeenginecoverbyremoving(1)10mmfastenerattheaftofthecoverthenpull upward. (Image3) 6) Removeandorplaceallhosessuroundingtheupperintercoolerhoseofftotheside.Excludingthefuellines.(Image4) 7) Removeupperintercoolerhose.Releasespringclipatintakeandspringclipatintercoolerjustbellowtheheadlight. Sometimesitisbesttounplugtheheadlightplugsandorsuroundingcomponentsinareainordertoreleasethespringclip attheintercooler.Removebypullingintakeendoffandthentheintercoolerend.Nextpullupwardinthedirectionofthe windshield. Thetimingmarkswillhave(2)tabsonthehubbehindthecamsprocketthatwillneed tobecenteredwiththetimingarrowonthetimingbeltbackingcover (Image18and19) 19) Installcrankshaftlockingtool T10050. Todothisslidethetoolintotheteethofthetoothedbeltpulleythenintothe roundmachinedholeintheoilpumpcasting.Makesuretool T10050timingmarkisalignedwiththecrankshafttiming mark.Makealignmentasneeded.(Image20)(Note:NEVERusetool T10050totorquecrankfasteners) 20) Installtool3359intocamshaftsprockethub.Slidetoolintoemptyslottedholeatleftofcamshaftsprockethub. CrankshaftSealRemovalandInstallation: 24) Atthistimeifyourgoingtoreplaceyourcrankshaftsealremovethecrankshaftboltasshouldbelooseas describedinstep16. Usingtool3203,removelowercrankseal.Inspectcrankshaftforpossiblegroovefromwherethe oldsealrubbedonthecrankshaft.Lubricatethesealinglipofthenewcranksealwithcleanmotoroil.Usingtool3265, gentlytapnewcranksealintoplace.Ifagrooveexistedinthecrankshaft,recessthenewsealslightlydeepersotheseal lipridesonanewsurfaceareaofthecrankshaft. Important:Donotrotateor turnthecrankshaftatthistime. 25) Re-installtoothedbeltpulleyandusingtool3099torquecrankboltto88ftlbs+1/4turn. 26) Mostlikelyduringsteps22and23thecrankshafttimingmarkmayhaveslightlymoved.Rotatetimingmarkback intoplaceandinstalltool T10050.

(Note: Lightlytorquebolts,butmakesurenottoovertightenasthiscandamagethetool) Nextturnthecenterspindleontool T10052evenlyandstraituntilthehubseparatesfromthetaperofthecamshaft. 30)Removecamshaftsealusingextractortool3240.Inspectcamshaftforpossiblegroovefromoldsealwearingon camshaftsealsurfacearea.Lubricatetheseallipofcamsealwithcleanmotoroilandusingtool10-203tapnewcamseal intoplace.Ifagrooveexistedonthecamshaft,locatethenewsealafewmillimetersoutwardonthecamshaftsothatit ridesonanewsurfacearea. 31)Installcamshafthubtocamshaftsothatthehubalignsorcenterswiththetimingmarkonthereartimingbelt cover. (Image25) 43) Removeoldthermostat,notingtheorientationofit.Cleanthermostatmatingsurfaceonengineblock.Installthenew thermostatinthesameorientationasremovedalongwiththeo-ring. 44) Reinstallthermostathousingtoblockandtorquehousingto7ftlbs.andreinstallhoseandclamp.

WrapUp: 45) Turnengineoverbyhandtwofullrevolutionsandverifythatthereisnointerference. 46) Bring#1ofenginetotopdeadcenterandverifyalltimingmarksalignproperlyasoutlinedearlier. 47) Installthelowertimingbeltcover.Important: ApplyLoctitetothe(5)10mmboltswhenreinstalling. 48) Reinstallmotormountcastingtoengineblock.Besuretoapplythreadlockertoallexistingbolts.Installlowerbolt intomotormountcastingbeforepositioningbracketinplace,thenpositioncastingintoplaceinbetweenengineandbody ofvehicle.Installthe(3)boltsintocastingatthesametimeandstartthreadsofalltheboltsbeforetighteninganyoneof themdown.- Torquespecforthesefastenersis33ftlbs. 49) Reinstallthebodymotormountbracketwith(2)bolts.- Torquespecforthesefastenersis30ftlbs+1/4turn 50) Withtheengineloweredandbackattheproperlevel,installthemotormounttoenginebracketbolts.- Torquespec onthesefastenersis74ftlbs. 51) Locateanycomponentsremovednotspecificallyaddressedinthisguidelineandre-install. 52) Revieweachstepfoundinthissetofguidelinestoensureeachcomponent hasbeenaddressedproperlyandhasbeenre-fastenedtospecification.

CoolingSystemFilling: 68) Reconnecttheloweroilcoolerhosetofitting. 69) Makesuretheradiatordrainknobistight. 70) Fillthecoolantexpansiontankslowlywitha50/50mixofcoolant/antifreeze andwater. 71) Installyourcoolantexpansiontankcap,startyourengineandallowthe enginetowarmuntiltheradiatorfanscycleatleastonceoruntilyouaresure thethermostathasopened. Youcansafelybringtheengineuptoaround2000 Image24 RPMtoquicklydevelopheatintheengineinorderforthethermostattoopen. *Ifthecoolantexpansiontankfluidlevelgoesdownwhileyouarerunningthe engine,turnoffthevehicleandcarefullyremovethecoolantexpansiontankcap. Re-fillwithcoolanttothemaxlineandre-starttheengineandletwarmagain untiltheradiatorcycles. 72) Whentheenginehascooledre-checkthecoolantandaddasneeded.
