    REVIEW OF 1986 ============== ACHILLES HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER. During its first 50 years Achilles dominated British athletics, laying the foundations for the national development of the sport, and for today's boom in mass participation. The great spread in the popularity of athletics, fostered by our early Members, has enabled other clubs to surpass our once exclusive position. However, although some would say that admissions policies have slowed the advance of standards, University records continue to be broken. More athletes than ever before compete for OUAC and CUAC, both men and women, and the range of events expand year by year. The 3000m Walk was included in the programme as a scoring event for the first time in 1986, and last year's Oxford President, Tim Berrett, is himself a distinguished walker. This year Cambridge have elected a lady, Allison O'Neill, as their President, and for the first time there will be a ladies' second team match in conjunction with this year's 'Varsity Match, demonstrating the great increase in support for ladies' events since Sarah Owen (Bull) and others worked to encourage them ten years ago. As CUAC and OUAC move with the times, so Achilles is responding to the changing requirements of its members, most of whom have already formed allegiances to local clubs before coming up to the Universities. We acknowledge now that the competitive needs of our active Members are for the most part catered for by CUAC, OUAC and home clubs. However, only about 20 percent of our Members are active athletes, and in this Achilles is unique among British athletics clubs.

    Same Image, Different Lens: Revisiting the Critical Reception of Two Different Generations of Cinematic Superheroism Kaitlyn A. Cummings Abstract What does a superhero film have to be in order to be celebrated as a ‘feminist’ text? This essay aims to answer that question by surveying the critical reception surrounding four superhero films: Catwoman (2004), Elektra (2005), Wonder Woman (2017) and Incredibles 2 (2018). Each led by female characters, these films received grossly different appraisals of their feminist messages. Close analysis of each film sheds new light on what cultural changes may be responsible for the disparity in reception; bridging the gap through interrogation of the contemporary sociopolitical climate. Keywords: female superhero, feminism, postfeminism, film criticism, genre studies Introduction Hollywood has not been kind to the female superhero. History shows the superheroine has rarely been given a cinematic stage of her own, instead often relegated to an auxiliary role as sidekick (Storm, X-Men; Black Widow, Iron Man; Wonder Woman, Justice League), positioned to serve as a romantic foil to male protagonists (Jean Grey, X-Men; Elektra, Daredevil; Sue Storm, Fantastic Four) or cast as a hyper-sexualized villainess (Mystique, X-Men; Poison Ivy, Batman & Robin; Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad). However, among this extensive catalogue of underserved women with superpowers appearing on the silver screen, a narrow few have had the opportunity to star in their own pictures. Since the arrival of the new millennium, a period Jason Dittmer refers to as a “post-9/11 cinematic superhero boom,”1 up until last year, there have been only four female-led superhero films: Catwoman (2004), Elektra (2005), Wonder Woman (2017) and Incredibles 2 (2018).

    SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman.     Evolution of Irish National Records 1861-2020 Event Note Athlete Competition Venue Date The task of developing a table of the Progression of the Irish National Records, from before the birth of organised Athletics in the late 19th Century up to the present day, inevitably presents the compilers with a number of difficult problems. First, of course, is the difficulty that arises from the existence of parallel governing organisations during significant periods of this history and the practice of their maintaining non co-ordinated sets of records. We have also needed to recognise that up until almost the last quarter of the 20th century performances achieved outside Ireland were not accorded status as Irish National Records. Thus, most notoriously perhaps, the winning performances of Bob Tisdall and Ron Delany at the Olympics of 1932 and 1956 were never, in their day, recognised as Irish Records. But there were many others, perhaps less prominent, which because they were achieved outside Ireland were never subjected to those levels of appropriate scrutiny which are customarily accorded to Irish record performances. A further problem arises from the fact that until sometime in the early-1930s the National Record was deemed to be the best authenticated performance made in Ireland whether by a local athlete or by an overseas visitor. Thus an Official List of Records published, for example, in 1924 credited Irish Records to Wyndham Halswelle (SCO., 440y), Hugh Welsh (SCO.,1 Mile), Alvin Kraenzlein (USA, 120yH), and Ralph Rose (USA, Shot Putt). The particular significance of this in the context of our project is that, therefore, a performance by an Irish athlete superior to an earlier Irish Record but inferior to that achieved by an overseas athlete, was not considered for ratification and so, not subjected to the higher levels of scrutiny customarily applied when considering whether to award the accolade of “Irish Record” to a particular performance.

In 1987 Wonder Woman was revised by George Perez as part of an overhaul of the DC Universe, in the Crisis on Infinite Earths story arc. All the major DC characters were revised and some characters such as Supergirl and The Flash disappeared. Perez wrote sixty- one issues of Wonder Woman (Feb 1987-December 1991) and his revision affected her representation up to her reinvention in the New 52 in November 2011 (Vol. 4). In his revision of Wonder Woman, Perez also discarded her Diana Prince secret identity and Steve Trevor as love interest. However, influenced by spiritual and feminist discourses of the mid seventies onwards, he made her into a Goddess-like fantasy figure split into two identities. She is Diana, Princess of Themyscira a private, spiritual neo liberal, but she is branded in consumer culture as Wonder Woman, goddess. The discourses constructing Wonder Woman as goddess, however, clashed with other discourses circulating in popular culture and politics that aimed at disempowering female autonomy and highlighted paradoxes in Wonder Woman as female icon.

Batman which isn't collected here, but should be in subsequent volumes was my first-ever Legends of the Dark Knight: Norm Breyfogle: Volume 1 comic, and I reread it so many times in the intervening years I'm pretty sure I have it memorized. From that book forward, I was absolutely addicted to Norm Breyfogle's Batman -- the harsh angles, the incredible page layouts, the mix of narrative storytelling ability and an aggressive dynamism that I just don't even kno So man, I have been waiting for this collection to exist for over 20 years.
