Top Ten Songs of the Summer Top Ten Songs of the Summer Top Ten Songs of the Summer 1. “One Dance” (Drake ft WizKid & Kyla) From his album Views, this upbeat tune is arguably the number one song of the summer, crowning the Billboard Hot 100 for almost 18 weeks and earning its place as one of the most successful records ever. On his track, Drake raps over a sample of “Do You Mind” by Crazy Cousinz and Kyla, putting his own dance twist on it. As soon as it was released on April 5, it quickly became number one in over ten countries, reigning in the UK for over 15 consecutive weeks, and earning its title as Britain’s all time number one hit. 2. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” (Justin Timberlake) Originally released on the soundtrack for the DreamWorks animated film, Trolls, this single became the second song to spend its first 10 weeks atop the charts, since the Black Eyed Peas’s “Boom Boom Pow” from 2009. Timberlake wrote and produced the song, along with Max Martin and Shellback. A funky mix of disco and pop, this song has been all over the radio and may become 2016’s version of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams—an overplayed classic. 3. “Don’t Let Me Down” (Chainsmokers ft. Daya) Between “Down” and “Roses,” (featuring Rozes), this song has ruled Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for over 19 weeks. Besides dominating the charts, this song has been a smash hit on the radio, with its synth driven beat and the layered vocals of the talented “Hideaway” singer, Daya. This song was actually released in February, but its trap and dance-pop influences have earned it a place in the top ten songs of the summer. 4. “Cheap Thrills” (Sia ft Sean Paul) Like many other tracks on her album, This is Acting, this track was apparently meant for Rihanna to sing; however, she rejected it. Sia wanted the track to sound like Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and to incorporate the soul of that song, but after hearing her cut version of it, she thought it sounded too Brit-pop for Rihanna. So the song was passed back to her, and Sia recorded her own version, hoping it would be a hit of the summer—which it was! This song is Sia’s first chart topper of the Hot 100, though she is also credited as an artist for “Diamonds,” which topped back in 2014. Top Ten Songs of the Summer Graphic by Nicole Ng 5. “This Is What You Came For” (Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna) Responsible for one of the biggest celebrity feuds of the summer, this song was originally supposed to go on Rihanna’s album, but she thought it didn’t fit her sound and so instead was featured in it. The song made its way to number one on the top charts and earned itself a spot as one of the top songs of the summer, but not without creating bad blood (pun intended!). On the original Wikipedia page, Nils Sjoberg was listed as one of the songwriters but was taken off shortly after. It turns out the name was a pseudonym for Taylor Swift, who wrote the song with Calvin Harris, her boyfriend at the time. At first, Harris denied that Swift had anything to do with the track, but he later tweeted that Swift helped write the song and that her vocals are even featured on it. Because of this conflict and perhaps for other reasons, the celebrity power couple broke up after dating for a year. 6. “Panda” (Desiigner) Desiigner told PVNCH that the song title was meant to allude to his belief that the white BMW X6 with tinted windows—his dream car—resembles a panda. The producer, Menace, sold the beat of the song to Desiigner for only $200. He told Yahoo News that he had been playing Grand Theft Auto V when he came up with the song’s theme. Unusual for the charts, this song reached number one without a music video. 7. “Needed Me” (Rihanna) This song is about Rihanna’s ex who is still obsessively in love with her, even though Rihanna considered the fling strictly physical. DJ Mustard is credited with the instrumentation, along with Twice as Nice, who also produced Tiesto’s song “Wasted.” The song was first on the R&B Top Ten Songs of the Summer charts for 11 consecutive weeks. In an interview, Rihanna nonchalantly talked about breaking her ex’s heart, saying, “Didn’t I tell you I was a savage?” 8. “Into You” (Ariana Grande) This upbeat song is off of Ariana’s third album, Dangerous Woman. The song was released as the album’s second single. It has peaked at number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, being described as a dance-pop song, featuring “a thudding disco beat, lurking synths, and sharp clicks” (Billboard Top 100), in its instrumental. She performed the song on the Billboard Music Awards and the performance was listed as the best of the night by Billboard, Rolling Stones, and Time. 9. “Cake By the Ocean” (DNCE) The song title was created when the Swedish production team, Mattman & Robin, asked for a cake by the ocean, but meant to ask for the drink “Sex on the Beach.” Overhearing this conversation, Joe Jonas, the lead singer of DNCE, decided to write this song with Justin Tranter, finishing it in ten minutes flat. 10. “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” (Adele) Adele addresses this song to her former boyfriend who broke her heart, saying this is to “Let him know I’m over it.” She originally wrote the skeleton of the song at age 13, titled “We Ain’t Kids No More.” The song was produced and co-written by Max Martin and Shellback. Adele chose this track as 25’s lead single since it’s “much more poppy” than “Hello.” Adele did 12 takes for the video, since she danced in it, didn’t have a choreographer, and wanted to keep the rhythm “natural.” .

west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

  • Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1
Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. KEY WORDS Latin poetry, pedagogy, popular music, music videos, song lyrics, Taylor Swift INTRODUCTION When I assign Roman poetry to my classes at a large research university, I re- ceive a decidedly unenthusiastic response. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion.
