The reason why the researcher chose slang, because slang is a unique and funny language, so the researcher wants to discuss it in more detail to increase knowledge and insight to people who are interested about slang. According to Partridge (1950) there are several types of slang, namely: 1. Blending - Blending is a process of combining two or more words become a new word. Usually it is combining the end of the word and the beginning word. The combination of two separate forms to produce a single new term is also present in the process called blending. However, blending is a typically accomplished by taking onlythe beginning of one word and joining it to the end of the other word. In the wordlwide, there is a product that is used as gasoline but is made from alcohol, so the “blended” word for referring to this product is gasohol. To talk the combined effects of smoke and fog, we can use the word smog. Examples: 1. Smaze (smoke + haze) 2. Imma (i am + going + to) 3. Gotta (got + to) 4. Smurk (smoke + murk) 5. Bit (binary + digit) 6. Brunch (breakfast + lunch) 7. Motel (motor + hotel) 2. Someone’s Nickname - Someone’s Nickname is the type of slang related to someone or a thing that has particular conditions toward their appearance. Examples: 1. Chickens - a coward 2. Honey - beloved person 3. Dude – friend 3. Shortened Sentence Forms - Shortened Sentence Forms are any modification of word that is shortened or has been modified by speaker to make the slang appears shorter than the original word. Examples: 1. Y’all - you + all 2. Whatcha – what are you 2 3. Lemme - let me 4. Kinda kind of 5. Bumder – bummer and bender 4. Society Slang - Society slang is commonly used in daily speaking and connected to the society. Every society group uses some types of slang, and by association, those words or phrase become property that belong to that group. Examples: 1. Silver pheasant - A beautiful society woman 2. Booty cadillac - Very sexy butt 3. Lotto - Lottery or Games 4. High as hell - Very drunk This research analyzes the slang language contained in the song lyrics of The Black Eyed Peas entitled Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, Pump It, Shut Up and My Humps. Biology of Sex (Biol 213) Fall 2014 Tamatha Barbeau Sep/1/14 The Biology of Beauty in the Media: “My Humps” The music video “My Humps”, by the Black-Eyed Peas (link and lyrics below) provides a good example of several concepts discussed in this course. The lyrics and interplay between Fergie and Will.I.Am in the video provides clear demonstrations of topics covered under our Biology of Beauty lectures. One of these topics is male competition for females. In the video Fergie says “They say I’m really sexy. The boys they wanna sex me. They always standing next to me…”, which implies that multiple men are competing for her attention. However, Fergie is choosy – demonstrating female choice – when she says (They are) “Tryin’ a feel my hump, hump. Lookin’ at my lump, lump. U can look but you can’t touch it, If u touch it I’ma start some drama, You don’t want no drama, No, no drama, no, no, no, no drama. So don’t pull on my hand boy, You ain’t my man, boy.” This shows that she is making the choice, and that unwelcome advances from a man she has not chosen will be rebuffed by ‘drama’. Another topic demonstrated in this video is that males and females have different reproductive agendas. Males want mating opportunities with healthy, beautiful, young (fertile) females but females want more selective mating with males that offer resources and fidelity. Fergie states that men are trying to advertise their resources when she says “I drive these brothers crazy.
